Literature(文学) is a word used to describe written as well as spoken material. Generally speaking, it is often used to describe anything from creative imagination, including works of poetry(诗), drama and novel.
Then why read literature, since it is often imaginary and seems unconnected with real life?
A lot of us read literature for enjoyment and relaxation. It’s always pleasant to read some interesting books in our spare time. In a modern life full of stress, it is our common wish to read some imaginary works and look for relaxation from the stress in life.
Reading literature is more than fun; it also allows us to get knowledge. As a general rule, literature represents a language of a people, and it often gives us an insight(洞察力) into the traditions, attitudes and values of the age in which it was written.
Sometimes literature can even offer us new, creative ways to have a better understanding of the world. It introduces us to new worlds of experiences. We enjoy the comedy and the tragedy(悲剧) of poems, stories and plays; and we may even grow through our literary journey with books. At last we may discover meaning in literature by looking at what the writer says and how he or she says it. In some ways, we explore the human condition and analyze(分析) the way they think and feel the way they feel. Literature helps us think clearly and encourages us to open minds.
So we can certainly say literature is very important to us. Why not get going with one poem, drama or fiction at once?

Judy and I like reading history books, so we are better at history than Alice and Dave. Alice usually reads science books and she wants to be a scientist (科学家) when she grows up. She knows more about science than us. Dave is talented in drawing. Most of his drawings look fantastic. He really loves art. That’s why he reads much more art books in his free time. I think he can be an artist in the future (未来).
Four of us often go to the city library to read books together on weekends. Sometimes we are so interested in our reading that we even forget to eat lunch. After reading, we share our feelings with each other. We feel so lucky to have each other as friends.
1. Is Judy older than Linda?2. Who knows more about science than the other three?
3. What happens when they are sometimes very interested in their reading?
4. Do you feel lucky when you have friends like Judy, Alice and Dave? Why or why not?

Everyone needs a break, and holidays are a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. Summer vacation is coming so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English literature to take on a long train journey while you’re hanging out with the family.
If you’re at the beginner level, there are two choices: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. This will help you understand better, since you’ve already known the story. If you’re at the middle level, popular books like novels and mysteries are good choices, as they are attractive enough to increase the possibility of your understanding of the book. For top readers, science books, classical books or prize winners, such as Nobel, Pulitzer are good choices.
The most important thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few pages are always really hard to get through, as I have to get used to the way the writer uses the language. But after that, things get a lot easier, especially if I like the story.
Another great way to help you read in the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve and talk about the book with each other by QQ or e-mail. I’m doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve done this since we were classmates in Chinese at college.
Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; and if you like horror, Stephen King’s novels are always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or writer that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!

With the development of science, more and more robots come into our life. They can help us in different ways. ①But robot scientists say that one-year-old human babies can do better than robots in something. Let’s take a look.
Pick things up
If we drop our pencil on the floor, first, we must find the pencil and look at its distance(距离). Then we move our hands to it. A robot cannot always move its “hand” to the right place. Then, when we touch the pencil, it might roll(滚动)a little bit. Robots cannot easily understand this either. So, if a robot wants to pick up a pencil on the floor, it will probably roll it around the room.
Understand the world made by people
“Common sense” is what we don’t need to think or talk about. Because of common sense, we pick up a coffee cup by its handle(把手), we feel whether it has coffee inside, and whether it is hot.
A robot may turn the cup upside down. It may hold the hot part of the cup. Scientists have tried teaching robots common-sense rules. But it doesn’t help much. There are just too many rules and too many exceptions(例外). ②或许他们需要更多的时间来学习这些规则.
Get around in our world
If someone drops you in a building you’ve never been to, you might feel a bit lost. But you can look around, find a door and get out quickly. But a robot will look everywhere for a door, even on ceilings(天花板)and floors. Because it’s difficult for them to understand spaces. Scientists need to train them a lot to learn this.
1. What will happen if a robot tries to pick up a pencil?2. What does “common sense” mean?
3. 请在文中找出与该句意思相近的句子 “Because understanding spaces is hard for them.”
4. 请将文中划线部分①译为中文。
5. 请将文中划线部分②译为英文。

Miao began learning to carve porcelain in 1997. One day, she saw a folk artist carving a cute dog on a white porcelain plate. She was amazed. Then she decided to learn the skills.
The art of porcelain carving has a long history and was popular during the Qing Dynasty. Different pictures and patterns, including humans, flowers, birds and buildings, can be created on the surface of porcelain with special tools.
According to Miao, different from many traditional forms of art, porcelain carvings can be kept forever. However, it’s not easy to carve on a very thin surface. It requires precision (精确) and great painting skills.
To spread the traditional culture, Miao began teaching at the school in 2018. She found that the students with hearing problems were good learners of the art, because they were not easily influenced by different sounds. They also had their own understanding.
With the help of other teachers, Miao had little difficulty communicating with her students. “They can read my lips and then think, describe and share their understanding and questions. They get lots of happiness from the process. I will continue to help the students learn the skills and create more beautiful works of art. I hope I can spread the traditional art and culture.” she said.
