One day in March — not a special day for any reason, not a birthday or a holiday — Charlie woke up early to the noise right outside his bedroom door. Light from the sun was shining through the window. When he listened more carefully, he also heard cries of happiness along with the noises. That must be Lila, his little sister. Really, Lila got excited about everything — the mail, the first day of school, going to the park, watching her favourite cartoon, helping their mom make cookies. However, everyone called Charlie a boring boy.

“I guess I have to go and see what this is all about.” Charlie thought. And then he took a deep breath to prepare himself for the noisy outside world.

As soon as he opened the door, something small and hairy ran to him and Lila started shouting loudly. Charlie bent down and picked up the brown puppy. It kept jumping forward in his arms to lick his face.

“Wow, its so lovely.” Charlie thought. Lila was jumping around Charlie and singing, “He’s excited, he’s excited, Charlie is so excited!”

Their mom walked into the living room and smiled when she saw Charlie holding the puppy. “You like him, Charlie?” she asked.

“I love him!” Charlie said. He played with his soft ears. Its whole body was so soft. “What should we call him, kids?” their mom said. “How about Happy?” Charlie suggested. “That’s a great idea!” shouted Lila.

You might think when a dog wags its tail, it’s always happy to see you. But a dog’s tail can say a lot to us.     1    

Scientists found out that dogs’ feelings lie in different positions they wag their tails.     2     If the tail is higher, it may mean the dog is interested in something. A tail standing straight up can show that the dog is angry. A tail that’s straight out to the side often means it is curious.     3     The more it wags, the more excited it is!

The wagging direction can also help us understand a dog’s feelings. A wag to their right usually means the dog is happy.     4     This is because the two sides of a dog’s brain control the opposite sides of the body. The left side of the brain has to do with good feelings, while the right side works on not-so-good feelings.
