Wuxi city in East China’s Jiangsu province is known as the “Home of the Erhu”, because it is the b    1     of many Erhu masters. Walking around Wuxi, you can often hear the wonderful s    2     of the erhu. The erhu was f    3     called Huqin, a musical instrument in northern China, which dates more than a thousand years back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). In modern times, with the development of Chinese operas, the huqin was renamed the erhu and later it s    4     throughout China.

The erhu plays a l    5     role in many Chinese folk orchestras (乐团), just as the violin does in Western orchestras. The erhu and the violin also have s    6     parts, both made up of a body, a bridge, strings and a separate bow.

The player usually holds the erhu on the leg, holding the neck with his left hand and pressing the strings with his f    7    , while drawing the bow with his right hand. As the bow runs a    8     the strings and vibrates (使振动) them, beautiful music leaps out. Not limited by just two strings, a good player can give erhu amazing expression. It can present both soft, lovely tunes, and grave, sorrowful music.

Today, as an oriental folk instrument, erhu can be seen playing on the same stage with various Western instruments, such as piano, violin and guitar, in many international c    9    . This not only adds new possibilities for music creation, but also brings r    10     enjoyment to the audience (观众). If you’re interested, you might as well find a piece of erhu music and listen to it!

Have you ever forgotten where your socks are when you wake up in the morning? Can you remember what you     1     (eat) for lunch a week ago? You may think that being forgetful is not a good thing,     2     now you should be thankful.

Scientists from the University of Toronto found that forgetting is     3     (actual) a key part of learning, the Independent reported. Forgetting unnecessary information can help our     4     (brain) work better.

What kind of information is unnecessary? Scientists say that this may have something to do     5     the environment we live in.

In an environment that is always changing, our brains may require us     6     (remember) less. For example, a supermarket cashier meets many people every day and will probably only remember them for     7     short time. But a designer who often meets his or her clients will remember these people for much     8     (long).

That’s because our brains keep making new neurons from stem cells. There is a special area in our brains called the hippocampus (海马体). It enables     9     (we) to learn and remember things. The new neurons in the hippocampus help renew our old memories. This could explain     10     we still can remember so much about the time when we were very young.
