名校
文章大意:本文主要讲坐得太久对我们的大脑有害。

【推荐3】We’ve known that sitting for long periods of time every day brings great harm to our physical health. It usually has an unhealthy influence on our heart, blood sugar, blood fats as well as our spine (脊柱). But now a new study has found that sitting is also bad for your brain.

A study published by Dr. Prabha Siddarth at the University of California, showed that sitting for too long would reduce thickness of the medial temporal lobe (中颐叶), a brain area that is very important to learning and memory.

The researchers asked a group of 35 healthy people, aged 45 to 70, about their activity levels and how long they spent sitting every day and then scanned (扫描) their brains. They found that people who reported sitting for longer periods had the thinnest medial temporal lobes. It means that the more time you spend in a chair, the worse it is for your brain health.

Doing exercise will help to keep you from the harm of sitting for too long. Surprisingly, the research also found that you don’t even have to move much to improve the situation: just standing up will be of great help. In one of the tests, two groups of people were asked to complete a test while either sitting or standing. They are expected to name the color, like the word “green” in blue ink, as quickly as possible. People who thought on their feet beat those who sat by 3 milliseconds.

This may run counter to the old received ideas about deep thought. School teachers used to tell you to sit quietly and focus while studying. Also, in Rodin’s famous sculpture (雕塑), “The Thinker” also seated with chin (下巴) on his hand. But the result shows that they were wrong. You can now all stand up.
