What kind of job would be right for you? Think about your interests and your skills. You may like to listen to music, dance, play basketball, or work with computers. You may know how to drive a car or how to get along with people. Knowing both your interests and skills will help make a better plan for your career.
To get an idea of what work you would like to do, make a list of your interests and a list of your skills. Think about what you have done to be successful in your interests. After that, brainstorm a list of career choices that might match your interests and skills. You can later keep your lists with the projects and documents that can help you achieve the career you want. They can help you know more clearly about your achievements in school and in the world of work.

Mark Hoffmann and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse, and they often serve their guests fresh food from the garden. They have been growing food and flowers for over twenty years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffmann has been experimenting and working with shade(阴凉)planting. He says, “As is known to all, most plants will produce more in full sun. But if you do not have full sun, here is a new way.”
For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffmann says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours a day of direct sunshine, especially the morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours a day of full sun, it also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients(营养素)and water.
Mr. Hoffman says only plants with wider leaves do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun. Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem, so Mr. Hoffmann does not have to use pesticides. He planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get the morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Some insects dislike shade, and the hottest part of the day is when they do the worst of their damage to the plants.
Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings—these all influence how much sunlight falls on plants. And people interested in shade planting should also remember something else. The term “shade” can be different amounts of darkness and different things in different places.

Why would a plant need to fight back? To avoid being eaten, of course! Plants have several ways of protecting themselves. A plant can grow in a hidden or hard-to-get-to place. Think of plants you’ve seen growing on steep, rocky cliffs (悬崖). Or, a plant could make only some parts of itself attractive to hungry insects and animals. For instance, if a plant produced really tasty leaves, herbivores (creatures that eat only plants) might eat the leaves instead of the seeds, which the plant needs for making more plants. Some plants have sharp or slippery (滑的)parts that discourage insects and other animals from getting too close, like the thorns (刺)on a rosebush.
But the most interesting way is that plants can produce chemicals. Plants take minerals from the soil and combine them into chemicals that do a lot of work. For example, plants produce chlorophyll (叶绿素), which helps convert sunshine and water into the sugars that plants eat. They also produce chemicals to help protect themselves. One kind of tobacco plants releases a chemical into the air whenever small bugs begin to eat it. The chemical signals large bugs, saying "Dinner’s ready!" The big bugs come to eat the little ones and save the plant.
Most plants use chemicals in a more direct way against their enemies. In other words, plants make poison.

At that time, only the very rich in Britain had gardens. Very soon after this, homes with gardens began to be built. This is what started the British love of gardening. Today millions of Brits like to say that they have “green fingers”, with around half the population spending their free time gardening.
①For many people in the UK, their garden is their own private world.②Each spring, children plant sunflowers and wait to see which one is the tallest.③Experienced gardeners know just the right corner for roses, and others spend hours trying to grow perfect vegetables to enter into competitions.④And while many Brits like nothing better than spending their Sunday cutting the grass, some are happy just to sit under the trees and enjoy the beauty of the world around them.
But in cities, limited space has led to people looking for new solutions. Those without outside space can rent small pieces of land on which to grow things. Today, there are over 4, 000 people in London waiting for such pieces of land. One recent idea has been to turn housetops and walls into private gardens. These gardens have helped make the cities greener and the air cleaner.
As well as being good for the environment, gardening is also good for the spirit. What other free-time activity allows you to be at one with nature and create more beautiful living things? And take a moment to read this line from The Secret Garden: “Where you tend arose… A thistle cannot grow.”
