My favorite show was The Life Laundry. It was so interesting. It came on Saturday mornings after Norm on This Old House and Rick Steve’s Europe. It was like Clean Sweep. It chose some common people. In the show, people took everything in the house outside so they could see how many things they had. Then they would go through each thing they had. Then they would go through each thing and decide whether (是否) to keep or sell it. When people sold some things they would never use, a team (团队)would make the home more beautiful with a new coat of paint. At the end of the show, everyone was always happy to see their home cleaned up and look spacious.
Antiques Roadshow came after The Life Laundry, which was confusing (令人困惑的)because The Life Laundry made you want to clean out your things, but it made you want to keep everything.

Between 221 and 210 B.C, he started the construction of the Great Wall of China. He built a large network of roads. He introduced a new writing system, currency (货币流通), and set of measurements. The emperor also ordered the construction of a huge army of life-sized terracotta (陶器) soldiers. These, he hoped, would protect his tomb (基) after his death.
Today, the soldiers in Xi’an’s terracotta museum are light brown, but they weren’t always this color. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. Before their discovery, the clay soldiers were protected by being underground. When they were ___▲___, however, the air caused the coating under the paint to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking with it important pieces of history.
New techniques are now starting to reveal (揭露) the army’s true colors. Scientists have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese researchers have developed a special liquid (液体) to help keep the soldiers’ colors. After they find a soldier, scientists spread the liquid over it. They then cover it in plastic.
Scientists are also finding colors in the dirt around Xian’s terracotta warriors. “It’s important not to move the dirt, so the colors won’t be lost. We are treating the earth as an art piece,” says Rong Bo, the museum’s leading chemist. The next challenge, says Rong, is to find a way to put the colors to the army again. Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin’s army back to life in full color.
1. What is the reading mainly about?A.why the emperor’s clay army was built. |
B.the real colors of the terracotta soldiers. |
C.what life was like for soldiers under Emperor Qin. |
D.why the emperor’s tomb was built. |
A.cleaned up | B.dug up | C.looked over | D.fixed up |
A.A museum with many art pieces. |
B.A liquid in the tomb that keeps the soldiers’ colors. |
C.A place with over a hundred terracotta soldiers. |
D.A new tomb for Emperor Qin. |
A.The soldiers should be left the way they were found. |
B.Artists should be able to paint the soldiers the colors they want. |
C.We should try to repaint the army’s real colors. |
D.we should clear up the earth around the army for visitors to see them. |

The average (平均的) depth of the ocean is about 3,600 to 4,000 meters. With Fendouzhe, experts said China now has “full ocean depth ability.” This means scientists can carry out manned exploration at any depth of any ocean.
Fendouzhe can find rare earth metals in the deep sea. These are used to make high-tech products. “The ocean floor is a whole new world. If we don’t explore this world, others will explore it,” CCTV reported. The three researchers aboard the sub are also studying the many forms of sea life that are only found in the deep sea. The researchers can use the sub’s video camera to record what they find underwater. They plan to collect samples (标本) of rocks, animals and plants.
The area that Fendouzhe dove in is known as the Challenger Deep, a very deep part of the Mariana Trench with very high pressure of around 11,250 tons per square meter, China Daily reported. The sub stayed safe thanks to its super-strong titanium (钛) body.
Since it’s so difficult to send manned submersibles to the deep sea, why not just send a robot?
“The ocean floor is dark and can be very cloudy, and cameras sometimes cannot discover things there as effectively (有效率地) as human eyes,” Yang Ning, an ocean scientist, told China Daily.
Moreover, the scientists in the sub have different backgrounds. If something unusual happens, they can react (反应) quicker than machines, which lead to surprising discoveries, according to Yang.
