SCIENCE Xinhua May 30, 2020 Space X rocket launching two NASA astronauts to space successfully WASHIONGTON, May 30 (Xinhua)-U. S. Private space company Space X launched two astronauts into orbit(轨道)on Saturday. Later, Space X confirmed(证实)successful deployment(部署)of the rocket. The Space X rocket designed and built by Elon Musk’s Space X company has lifted off, sending Hurley and fellow astronaut Bob Behnken on a history-making flight to the International Space Station after launching hundreds of satellites to the space. Earlier this week, the flight into orbit was called off(取消)with 16 minutes to go in the countdown(倒计时)because of the danger of lightning. Lift off was rescheduled for Saturday at 3: 22 p. m. After earlier concerns about the weather, it appeared by 3 p. m. that conditions were favorable(有利的)for launching. The spacecraft took off on Saturday afternoon from the same launch pad at Cape Canavral, Florida, that was used during the Apollo missions to the moon a half-century ago. The spacecraft was originally set to launch on Wednesday afternoon for International Space Station, leading in a new period in commercial 9(商业的)spaceflight and putting NASA back in the business of launching astronauts from U. S. for the first time in nearly ten years. This launch was also the first one from a private vehicle(运载工具), Elon Musk’s Falcon 9 rocket(猎鹰九号火箭). Ever since the space shuttle(航天飞机)was retired in 2011, NASA has depended on Russian rocket to carry astronauts to and from the space station. Hurley and Behnken will spend about 19 hours in orbit before they catch up to the space station where they will be for a time between one and three months. |

CGTN Olympics Updated: January 22nd, 2022 Gu Ailing encourages more people to start skiing for fun Freestyle skiing rising star Gu Ailing came back to China earlier this week, preparing to attend the coming 2022 Winter Olympic Games. She will compete in three events, slope style, half pipe and big air, on behalf of China. Having recovered from injury and pain, she started to take part in different competitions in December 2021, Gu has never been absent from podium (领奖台) in any of the nine contests she attended. She has won six gold, two silver and one bronze medals in all the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cup and Mountain Dew Tour events she appeared in. Gu’s incredible performance in freestyle skiing has made her increasingly popular among youngsters and inspired their interest in flying on snow. In an interview with China Media Group (CMG) earlier this month, Gu said, “I’m so glad that I can be a member of Chinese team and I think skiing is a hobby, not a profession, to everyone, including me. It’s something I love to do,” Gu said. “So don’t treat sports like something you have to do. Stop telling yourself, ‘I must do it’ or ‘I must work hard in practice.’ You first love it before you want to practice and continue to grow better doing it.” “And that’s why I want to tell my friends in front of TV, especially girls, go out there and try it, experience it. Don’t give yourself pressure because no one asks you to be top of the world. When you are enjoying yourself doing sports, you are already the best.” |

Meet our astronaut teachers, Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao. On September 21,
This was the first science class from the Mengtian Lab Module (梦天实验舱).
Five classrooms were set in five different cities on the Earth.
“I felt excited to have the science class from space. I was most interested in the candle experiment,” said a primary school student from Beijing. “
The “Tiangong Class” was surely popular. And the Tiangong space station plays an important role in science popularization (普及) and education.

【推荐2】“Welcome to our new ‘classroom’!” said Chen Dong, one of the three astronauts of the Shenzhou XIV mission.
They were giving a science class 400 kilometers above Earth on Oct 12. It was the third space class from the Tiangong space station, but the first one from the Wentian lab module (实验舱) since its launch in July. The former two classes were held in the Tianhe core module (核心舱).
What does the new “classroom” look like? Chen, together with Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, showed us around. “The beds in the Tianhe module are placed horizontally (横着), while our beds are kept upright,” said Liu. That means astronauts in the Wentian lab module need to sleep standing up! But as Liu explained, people don’t feel any difference because there’s no gravity (重力) in space. Astronauts can even sleep on the ceiling (天花板) or upside down!
The astronauts also showed their “space farm”, where lettuce, wheat (小麦), thale cress (拟南芥) and rice are grown. “Take a picture!” “Send the picture!” Through a voice-controlled camera, Chen already sent a picture of the thale cress to scientists on Earth. Then he used scissors to cut a sample (样本). “I’ll put it into a fridge at -80℃ and later give it to scientists on Earth,” said Chen. Scientists will study how the environment of space affects the growth of plants.
“Can you see the water drops coming from the leaves? This is called ‘guttation’ (植物吐水现象),” said Liu, holding the well-grown rice. In space, the water drops are much bigger than those on Earth. So people can clearly see the guttation.
“We hope in the near future, we can harvest (收获) the food grown on our own,” said Chen. “Maybe one day, we can harvest food on the other planets like moon or even Mars!”

【推荐3】Space tourism is not all about rockets—space balloons can do it too! The Spanish company HALO Space had the first unmanned test flight of its balloon in December 2022. It will compete with several other companies in the space-traveling business.
The test lasted 4 hours. The balloon reached 37 kilometers above Earth. People would see Earth from the blackness of space, said the Daily Mail. By 2029, the company plans to carry 3,000 passengers on 400 trips a year. The ticket for each trip will cost between 100,000 and 20,000 US dollars (about 696,000 to 1,392,000 yuan).
The test balloon is 773 kilograms, with a diameter (直径) between 110 and 130 meters (the length of a soccer field). It is filled with hydrogen (氢气), which is much lighter than air. When it flies, it lifts the capsule (舱) connected to it. The capsule can carry eight passengers and a pilot. Passengers can enjoy the360-degree view through the big windows. To ensure people’s safety, the capsule is also equipped with parachutes (降落伞). Another company, the US-based Space Perspective, said that such trips are about relaxation. Their balloon rises slowly at about 300 meters per minute, and takes about two hours to fly to 30 kilometers. Space Perspective is planning to fly their balloons from ships on the sea. Then people can enjoy sunrise and sunset there!
