What is a smart home? It means you can control everything in your home through your phone or computer. Here are three new smart home products. They can make your life easier.
Smart light
The smart light bulb can change color. You can control it through an app.
This light bulb looks quite common. But when you turn it on, you’ll find it is different. You can change the light’s color! A US company MIPOW made it. All you need to do is to turn on your phone and open an app. In the app, there is a wheel (颜色盘) of millions of colors for you to choose from. When you choose a color, it can quickly change the room’s atmosphere (气氛). There is a speaker (扬声器) inside the bulb, so it can play music from your cell phone’s music library. You can also use it as an alarm clock. In the morning, your favorite music and the light color will wake you up!
Smart lock
You don’t need to bring a key with this smart lock. Sometimes we lose keys. But if you use this smart lock, you don’t have to worry about it. You can use your phone to open the door in a few seconds. A Swiss designer Yves Behar made it You’ll need an app and to get an account (账户). Then you can name your locks and control them through the app. The account will also tell you when a lock is open or locked. It’s very easy to use.
Smart toilet
In a smart home, there must be a smart toilet. After all, we need to use it so often. Japanese company Toto made one. The toilet doesn’t need an app or the internet. Instead, it has a smart home toilet sensor (感应器). When you come close, the toilet will know and it will raise or lower the seat by itself. The smart toilet also helps make the air fresh, so the restroom never smells bad.

Imagine the situation. You are an exchange student from China and now you are learning French in a university in Paris, the capital city of France. One day, you come into the kitchen of your flat. Twenty minute later, you cook several delicious French dishes. To everyone’s surprise, you learn the French language at the same time! This kind of wonderful kitchen is called a French Digital Kitchen or a “talking kitchen”. What do you think of the “talking kitchen”? A French Digital Kitchen was invented at Newcastle University in the UK. It teaches students how to cook French food and speak French at the same time. For the first time, students can learn the language by following cooking steps.
All grammar and vocabulary have been carefully chosen to make sure the users can understand French well. After learning for some time, the users can test themselves by doing a short test on the computer.
The kitchen project was started by Professor Paul Seedhouse. He began to show interest in the idea after he visited another kind of talking kitchen. He said, “The purpose of the French Digital Kitchen is to make learning a language more interesting and more educational.”
How does the kitchen work? There is a computer in the kitchen. With this computer, the users can first choose a French recipe(菜谱)that they want to follow. Using information in the computer, the kitchen starts to teach the users how to make a French dish. If you follow the instruction(说明)on the computer, it moves on to the next. If you go wrong, the program goes back and repeats the recipe or information.
The new kitchen can be used in schools, universities and even people’s homes. The researchers are working hard to develop the Digital Kitchen that can speak different languages.

A long time ago, the Chinese made kites to use in wars. They would fly these war kites in the dark. The kites were fixed (固定) so that they made strange sounds. Men who were at war with them would hear these sounds and run away. They thought those strange sounds were made by gods(神) in the sky.
The ancient Chinese also flew kites to bring good luck and to make their crops(农作物) grow rich and tall. Sometimes they tied long strings (细绳) and hooks (钩) to their kites. Then they would fly the kites over water, letting the hooks hang down to catch fish.

As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. Sometimes they do telephone interviews. Checking information is very important. They go to the newspaper’s own library to look up any information that they need. This is called “doing one’s homework.”
At the same time, the picture editor decides which photographs will be used for the next day’s paper. All the people who work on a newspaper must be able to work fast. Reporters have to stop working on one story and start working at once on the important new one. They must find out the new information as quickly as possible. Later in the day, everything is put together at the new desk. Reporters return, type their stories into the computer and hand them to the editor.
The chief editor decides which will be the most important story on the front page. Sometimes this will have to be changed if something more important happens late in the day. Other editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes.
Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories, and the time for printing the newspaper has come. This is done on fast-moving printing machines. The newspapers are then delivered (发送) by truck, plane or rail. Speed is important. People want to buy the latest newspaper; nobody wants to buy yesterday’s.
