A community in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, has a “mobile library” with the help of community planners. It allows people to enjoy reading at their doorsteps (门槛) and brings great convenience to people.
The mobile library is a tricycle. The yellow tricycle carries a pink bookcase. The bright color catches people’s eye easily. On the bookcase, there are lots of books. Every weekend, the mobile library goes around the community. People can give away or read books.
“Now, people are often too busy to go to the library and read,” Lu Jiayi, a community planner, said. “So we bring books to their doorsteps and hope they can enjoy reading instead of (而不是) spending lots of time on mobile phones.”
To start the mobile library project, the community planners invited eight families in the community to work together. They designed (设计) the library, fixed the tricycle, painted the bookcase, and picked books. Parents and children of the families worked together and knew each other better.
Now the mobile library has hundreds of books. Many people in other communities give away books to the mobile library and come to read. “I really enjoy reading here. I often bring my sister along with me” a child said.
The mobile library is a place to read, learn and relax. Many people like it very much and they say that the mobile library brings parents and children closer, and makes the community a warmer place.

Members of an international organization are called the Global Greeters. They offer travelers the chance to get to know a city as well as local people do.
Unlike the professional guides(专业导游), the volunteer greeters act more like neighbours. They take visitors to visit the city–either on foot or public traffic—to discover favourite neighbourhoods, cafes and parks.
All the programs work a little differently, but the basics(基本项目) are the same. The tours are free and last anywhere for two or four hours. Volunteers can be all ages, and their ages and interests try to match the travelers.
New York City(USA)
Big Apple Greeter is the pioneer “welcome visitor” program founded in 1992 by New Yorker Lynn Brooks. More than 300 volunteers now can welcome guests from all over the world in 22 languages. Greeters explain the New York City subway and bus systems and show guests around one or more of their favourite neighbourhoods. Like many greeter organizations, Big Apple accepts online donations to help with its daily costs.
Houston(USA)
Houston Greeters will organize activities such as golf, biking or an outing to an Astros game(太空人队的比赛). Another activity is to arrange a tour in need of a particular interest.
Chicago(USA)
Chicago Greeters help visitors visit one of the city’s many famous neighbourhoods. The group organizes walks through Ukrainian Village on the Near North Side and Andersonville, home to Scandinavian restaurants and shops and Middle Eastern bakeries. Guides will also organize tours around themes such as fashion, film or public art.
France
In France, English speaking volunteers for Parisien d’un Jour lead visitors through hidden corners of Paris, often ending with a lively discussion on a café balcony. Guides in Lyon organize walks around themes such as shopping, markets and sports.

Dear Miss Li,
I’d like to thank you for sending money to Animal Helpers. I’m sure you know that this group was set up to help disabled people like me. You helped to make it possible for me to have Lucky. Lucky makes a big difference to my life. Let me tell you my story.
What would it be like to be blind or deaf? Or imagine you can’t walk or use your hands easily. Most people would never think about this, but many people have these difficulties. I can’t use my arms or legs well, so normal things like answering the telephone, opening and closing doors, or carrying things are difficult for me. Then one day last year, a friend of mine helped me out. She talked to Animal Helpers about getting me a special trained dog. She also thought a dog might cheer me up. I love animals and I was excited about the idea of having a dog.
After six months of training with a dog at Animal Helpers, I was able to bring him home. My dog’s name is Lucky — a good name for him because I feel very lucky to have him. You see, I’m only able to have a “dog-helper” because of your kindness! Lucky is very clever and understands many English words. He can understand me when I give him orders. For example, I say, “Lucky! Get my book,” and he does it at once.
Lucky is a fantastic dog. I’ll send you a photo of him if you like, and I could show you how he helps me. Thank you again for changing my life.
Best wishes,
Ben Smith

【推荐2】New York is one of the last large American cities to have some of its policemen on horseback. ①The New York police have170 horses working in certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed, but it is even more expensive to look after them. Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horseshoes. In fact, they need more than 8,000 of them each year. Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month. Keeping these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths(铁匠). There are only about thirty-five of these blacksmiths in the whole United States. The cost of shoeing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars. ②而且要占用一位好铁匠两三个小时的时间去做这项工作。
A blacksmith’s job is not an easy one. He must be able to shape a shoe from a piece of metal and then fit it to the horse’s foot. The blacksmith must bend over all the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight of the horse’s leg while he works. Clearly, a blacksmith must be very strong. But even more important, he must be able to deal with horses—for before the blacksmith can begin his work, he has to get the horse to lift its leg.
One of the blacksmiths in New York is James Corbin. He came to the country from Ireland in 1948. He not only makes horseshoes for the police but also works for a group of horse owners near the city. Corbin became interested in blacksmithing because his father did it, and, as he puts it, “It is a good way to make a living.”

Helping Birds in a Changing World
Do you think birds are interesting? Do you like spending time outdoors? Do you care about wildlife and the environment (环境)? If you answered yes to these questions, you might think about becoming a bird biologist. Bird biologists are scientists who study birds.
Birds are interesting for many reasons. Birds have a lot in common, but at the same time, they can be very different from one another. All birds have feathers, and most of them can fly. They are in different sizes from hummingbirds smaller than your fist (拳头) to ostriches taller than the tallest person. Ostriches can’t fly, but they can run up to 70 kilometers an hour!
Bird biologists work to understand more about birds, their habits, and their homes. Some kinds of birds are dying off because they travel a long way during migration (迁徙). In North America, birds travel to northern places in the summer and to more southern places for the winter. Bird biologists are studying how and where birds get hurt along the way and trying to help them. But that’s not all bird biologists do!
Beth Flint is a bird biologist in a wildlife refuge (保护区) near Hawaii. She tracks (追踪) all the different kinds of seabirds in the refuge. She enjoys working outside, but she also works in an office. She reads research studies about all the animals in the wildlife refuge, and makes plans to help protect them, especially the birds. She talks to volunteers about the wildlife in the refuge, too.
To become a bird biologist, Dr. Flint studied many fields that all connect. She learned about wildlife, forestry, biology, zoology (the study of animals), botany (the study of plants), and ecology (生态学). Her interest in seabirds started when she was a student. She saw a photo of Atlantic Puffins on a rock and wanted to learn more about them.
You never know where your interests may lead (引领) you. They may lead you to become a scientist who studies wildlife!
