A new font(字体) designed by a Finnish software company could make your writing more polite and hopefully reduce cyberbullying(网络暴力).

Polite Type, developed by TietoEVRY, replaces harmful language with nicer words as you type. For example, if you type “you are ugly”, it will be replaced with “you are not traditionally beautiful”.

“We want bullies(欺凌者) to rethink the words they use and the actual meaning behind them,” said company manager Kia Haring.

The problem of cyberbullying has been around since the internet was invented. Nearly everyone who has used the internet has experienced it, or at least seen it in action.

Polite Type is a good step in the right direction. But how do we really deal with cyberbullying? For one, we can choose to be “invisible (隐形的)”—that is, to surf the internet without making any profiles (个人资料) or leaving any comments(评论). This, however, isn’t a real solution, as it forces us to give up our right to “exist (存在)” online.

We can also choose to simply take no notice of bullies. However, this isn’t perfect either, as it can be hard to forget people who are especially cruel (残酷的).

A better solution could be to block and report. If you block someone on social media, they won’t be able to see or comment on your posts. Most websites have rules against harmful language if you report a bully’s profile to the website, they will often stop that person from using the website. Sometimes direct action like this is the best action to take.

A.Bullies usually don’t have a good education.
B.Bullies often use polite words to chat online.

3. What are the last three paragraphs about?
A.How cyberbullying affects our life.
B.What we can do to deal with cyberbullying.
C.How Polite Type can protect us from bullying.
D.What rules websites should make to stop bullies.
4. What is the author’s opinion on cyberbullying?
A.It is a new problem.
B.It happens to everyone at least once.
C.There is no effective solution for it.
D.Taking direct action against it is best.

【推荐1】Video glasses make people look cool in movies. Now, thanks to scientists, our life could be even cooler. Professor Babak Parviz of the University of Washington in the US and his team have created a kind of electronic contact lens (隐形眼镜), which could allow you to watch TV and see electronic documents and e-mails directly on your eye.

The new lens can be put onto your eye and taken away just like a common contact lens. It has several parts, including an LED light, an electronic circuit (电路) and an antenna (天线) that picks up power and information.

In order not to influence people’s normal field of vision (视野), the researchers have kept all the parts particularly small. Some parts are thousands of times thinner than a human hair.

Besides its size, another challenge the researchers face is that the human eye can only focus on (聚焦) things a few centimeters (cm) away. Anything too close to our eyes will become blurry. People can’t see the things near us clearly. To solve this problem, Parviz used a thin, special lens called a “Fresnel lens” to make things look bigger.

▲      In order to make people feel safe about the lens, researchers tested it in a rabbit’s eye and it turned out that it did not appear to cause any health problems.

According to Parviz, one day, people will be able to see all the information they need directly from their contact lens. We may even be able to zoom(变焦) in on far-away views when enjoying views outdoors.

Parviz is now also trying to develop medical uses for the lens. He is working on putting a blood sugar sensor(感应器) into it to pick up the patient’s blood sugar level and other important medical information.

1. Why did the researchers keep all parts of the lens particularly small?
A.Because human eyes can only focus on small things.
B.Because they hoped these parts can be taken away easily.
C.Because they didn’t want to influence people’s normal field of vision.
D.Because small lens can be used to make things look bigger.
2. What does the underlined word “blurry” mean in Chinese?
A.清晰的B.模糊的C.放大的D.缩小的
3. Which is the best sentence for ?
A.Has the lens been tested on animals?
B.Is this kind of lens safe enough for humans?
C.Can the lens be used by animals?
D.Are there any other advantages?
4. What can you infer from the passage?
A.Wearing the lens, people may watch TV or read e-mails on the eye.
B.People can see all the information directly from their contact lens now.
C.So far, doctors have already used the new lens to pick up patient’s blood sugar.
D.This kind of special lens can be used as a telescope in the future.

文章大意:本文讲述了随着AI的发展,科学家们已经开始使用人工智能来帮助与动物交流。

【推荐2】Have you ever imagined being able to communicate with your pet at home and let them understand everything you say? It sounds too good to be true, but scientists have started using artificial intelligence (Al) to help communicate with animals.

AI allows humans to use technology to watch and understand the sounds and signals (信号) animals use so we can try to speak back to them.

Professor Karen Bakker said that AI is already helping humans communicate with bats (蝙蝠) and bees. This could change what we know about nature and our non-human relationships.

Bakker said AI helped decode (解码) recordings of animals talking to one another. She said trying to communicate in their language could be better than to teach them to use human sign language.

Bakker explained how scientist Yossi Yoyel had used recordings and Al to understand bats. “Bats argue over food; they communicate differently between genders (性别) they have their names, or ‘signature calls’,” she said. “But unlike human mothers raise their voices when talking to babies, mother bats lower the voice.” A computer can be trained to listen like a bat, but this can never be done with the human ear.

With bees, the computer both listens and watches the bees’ body movement to understand what they are communicating. “When bees ‘speak’ to one another, they use body movements, as well as the sounds, to communicate,” Bakker said. She said scientists now know how bees say things such as “hush (be quiet)” or “stop”.

Scientist Tim Landgraf even created a robot bee that entered a hive (蜂巢) and it was able to communicate to other bees when it wanted them to stop doing something or fly.

So, are you looking forward to communicating with animals one day?

2. Why does the writer mention bats and bees?
A.To give a direction of the future study.B.To doubt the findings scientist have reported.
C.To show the achievements scientists have got.D.To change people’s opinions about the two animals.

A.Scientists’ ways of communicating with bats.
B.Scientists’ findings about communication between bats through AI.
C.Differences between bats and humans in communication.

Few of us have heard of Nils Bohlin, but whenever we take a car journey his invention makes us safer. Found in almost every modern car, the three-point seat belt reduces our chances of death or injury* by at least 50% . While feeling thankful to this engineer from Volvo, you may also wonder how he came up with such a great idea.

Having worked as a plane designer before, Nils knew clearly that the pilots were willing to put on anything to keep them safe in an accident, but to his surprise, most people in the cars just didn’t want to be uncomfortable for even a minute. To improve the safety for people in the cars, he decided to find a perfect system which should be simple, effective and convenient. In the end, he invented the three-point seat belt, which has been considered as one of the greatest inventions in history.

Seat belts prevent people in the cars from serious injury in five ways.

Keep people inside. People who are thrown out from a car are four times more likely to be killed than those who stay inside.

Protect the strongest parts of the body. Seat belts are designed to fix your body at its strongest parts. For an older child and adult, these parts are the hips* and shoulders.

Spread out the force* in an accident. Seat belts spread the force of the accident over a wide area of the body. By putting less stress on one area, they can help you avoid serious injury.

Help the body to slow down, A quick speed causes injury. With the help of the seat belts, your body can have more time to slow down in an accident.

Protect your brain and spinal cord*. These two key parts injuries may be hard to see immediately, but they can cause death. Therefore, it’s of great importance to protect these parts.

It takes only a few seconds to buckle* up once you get in the car, but this simple action could save your life. Why wouldn’t you?

B.seat belts can keep your knees and feet away from the hard parts of the car
C.the body has more time to slow down in an accident thanks to seat belts
D.head and spinal cord injuries might be easy to see immediately in an accident
