Our Future in Space

Many people believe that one day, we may leave the Earth to make our home among the stars. At that time, many people, including you, might live in a space station 200 miles above the Earth.

Space Cities

There will be cities like the one we are living in now.     1     Hundreds, or even thousands, of people will live, work and go to school there.

In fact, we have explored(探索) part of the Moon, and even sent spaceships to the surface of Venus and Mars.     2

Go into Space

The Moon is full of valuable metals. These metals—if we got them—could be used to build factories and space stations.     3     In that case, more energy can be turned into electricity—for creating comfortable living conditions.

From space, too, we can look down on the Earth and study the atmosphere, its weather, and the influence of air pollution to save it.

At Home in Space

4     For example, we have to protect ourselves from the ultraviolet(紫外线) because it can give us bad sunburns. Besides, our bones(骨头) will become weaker if we stay out in space for a long time. But we’ll surely find out the solution.

Yet, these risks won’t keep people from going into space.     5     And people will live there with many different interests—medicine, farming, teaching and so on.

The next hundred years will be filled with other worldly adventures, exciting scientific discoveries, and danger, as humans leave the Earth—perhaps forever.

A.But outer space can be a dangerous place.
B.It seems impossible to live in the outer space.
C.Finally, Earth-like environment will be built in space.
D.Without doubt, the research of space has already begun.
E.Also, in space, there is no air to prevent the sun’s energy.
F.Space schools, hospitals, factories and farms will be built.

【推荐1】On the morning of Nov. 24, China made history by starting the world’s first lunar return mission of the past 44 years. On that day, a Long March 5 rocket was sent into space from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province. It’s carrying the Chang’e 5 lunar probe. The mission will last about 23 days, according to the China National Space Administration. The Chang’e 5 mission is special for several reasons.

A return mission
It’s China’s first sample return mission. This means that the Chang’e 5 probe will take back samples of the moon’s soil and rocks. The samples will return to Earth sometime in December.
The last lunar sample return mission was the former Soviet Union’s Luna 24 mission in 1976.
Larger samples
The Chang’e 5 mission plans to bring back larger samples than missions in the past. The former Soviet Union brought back 330 grams of lunar soil samples, while Chang’e 5 is aiming for 2 kilograms of lunar samples. Chang’e 5 doesn’t need a return cabin, so it only needs a small amount of fuel. This lets it carry heavier samples.
A new landing site
Chang’e 5’s lunar landing site is known as the Ocean of Storms. It’s on the near side of the moon seen from Earth. No probes have visited this site before. It’s geologically younger than the sampling sites from the US and former Soviet Union missions. The new samples will help us learn more about the moon’s history.

1. What do we know about the Chang’e 5 mission?
A.The mission will last over three weeks.
B.Chang’e 5 is a carrier rocket.
C.The mission started 44 years ago.
2. What will Chang’e 5 do on the moon?
A.Find out if there is water on the moon.
B.Carry soil samples from Earth to the moon.
C.Take back soil and rock samples from the moon.
3. What makes the Chang’e 5 mission different from those in the past?
A.It has a better return cabin.
B.It can take heavier samples back.
C.It can get more kinds of samples.
4. What do we know about the Ocean of Storms?
A.It is the youngest place on the moon.
B.Many countries have landed their probes there.
C.It is the part of the moon we can see from Earth.

【推荐2】In many science fiction (科幻) movies, men travel to faraway stars and even fight with aliens. But are there real aliens in the universe (宇宙)? The answer of some scientists is yes. So they have been searching for aliens in outer space for many years. They hope io find life signs of aliens.

Some scientists are used to using radio telescopes (望远镜) to search for aliens in space. In order to find aliens, they have worked hard for over half a century, but so far they have found nothing. Then some scientists guessed aliens might not want to connect us, but aliens could answer our messages. So some scientists sent radio signals into the universe. They hope one day they would be picked up by alien technology. These scientists want to prove (证明) that we are not alone in the universe.

But what should we do if the “alien phone” rings one day? Should we answer it? Stephen Hawking, the famous physicist, thought it could be dangerous to connect aliens. He said that the main purpose of aliens’ visiting to our solar system could be searching for our resources (资源). But other scientists think we have no need to worry. David Morrison. a NASA scientist, said, “If an alien radio signal reaches the earth from a planet thousands of light-years away, then they almost surely have solved all the problems we still have including the short of resources. Maybe they are much smarter than us, but why don’t they hurt us? I think we can try to connect them.”

3】As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as success.

Scientists have found out that the radiation (辐射) is the greatest danger to spacemen in space. When spacemen are working in space, they are in danger of the radiation from the sun and other stars, which is bad for their health. The harm of the radiation won’t be discovered until their children or even grandchildren are born. Some special medicine may work a little, but no really effective (有效的) medicine has been found so far.

Space junk is also thought to be a great danger to spacemen. It’s reported that there were 9,000 man-made things flying in space. About 30% of these are satellites, 10% are spaceships, and the rest are space junk. An explosion (爆炸) in space in 1999 made a cloud of 300,000 fragments, each at least 4mm in size, and even a small piece of these knocked against a spaceship window and did some damage (损坏).

Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working on helpful ways to do with space junk. Although space is really dangerous, it interests everyone on the earth. In the near future, it may become possible for people to spend a few days in a space hotel. We may even choose to leave the earth and live in space in a few years. So we should care for space and do something to help improve the space environment.

1. Most of the man-made things flying in space are ________.
A.satellitesB.spaceshipsC.space shuttlesD.space junk
2. The underlined word “fragments” probably means “________.”
A.piecesB.formsC.smogD.UFO
3. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Scientists have found out ways to solve any problem in space.
B.Every one of us can have a travel to space in ten years.
C.The harm of the radiation may be found in the spacemen’s children.
D.Space is really dangerous, so it doesn’t interest anyone on the earth.
