On the morning of Nov. 24, China made history by starting the world’s first lunar return mission of the past 44 years. On that day, a Long March 5 rocket was sent into space from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province. It’s carrying the Chang’e 5 lunar probe. The mission will last about 23 days, according to the China National Space Administration. The Chang’e 5 mission is special for several reasons.
A return mission
It’s China’s first sample return mission. This means that the Chang’e 5 probe will take back samples of the moon’s soil and rocks. The samples will return to Earth sometime in December.
The last lunar sample return mission was the former Soviet Union’s Luna 24 mission in 1976.
Larger samples
The Chang’e 5 mission plans to bring back larger samples than missions in the past. The former Soviet Union brought back 330 grams of lunar soil samples, while Chang’e 5 is aiming for 2 kilograms of lunar samples. Chang’e 5 doesn’t need a return cabin, so it only needs a small amount of fuel. This lets it carry heavier samples.
A new landing site
Chang’e 5’s lunar landing site is known as the Ocean of Storms. It’s on the near side of the moon seen from Earth. No probes have visited this site before. It’s geologically younger than the sampling sites from the US and former Soviet Union missions. The new samples will help us learn more about the moon’s history.1. What do we know about the Chang’e 5 mission?
A.The mission will last over three weeks. |
B.Chang’e 5 is a carrier rocket. |
C.The mission started 44 years ago. |
A.Find out if there is water on the moon. |
B.Carry soil samples from Earth to the moon. |
C.Take back soil and rock samples from the moon. |
A.It has a better return cabin. |
B.It can take heavier samples back. |
C.It can get more kinds of samples. |
A.It is the youngest place on the moon. |
B.Many countries have landed their probes there. |

At present, our spacecraft are too slow to carry large numbers of passengers (乘客) to Mars and it would take months. With the development of technology, by the year 2100, the journey might only take about 20 minutes in spacecraft that travel at the speed (速度) of light! However, the spacecraft would travel really fast, so the journey to Mars might be quite uncomfortable. Many people would feel ill.
Humans can’t live without water, air or food. So far, nobody knows if there would be enough water or air on Mars for people. Moreover, scientists are not sure if plants could grow on Mars. Food would most probably be made like pills (药片) and would not keep long.
Compared with life on the earth, life on Mars would be better in some ways. People would have more space. They might live in houses with huge comfortable rooms. Also, robots would do lots of their work so that they could have more time to relax. There would probably be no schools. Every student would study at online schools with “e-teachers”.
Life on Mars would be interesting and challenging (充满挑战的). However, it may take hundreds of years to make it true. So the most important thing we need to do now is to protect our beautiful blue planet-the Earth!

First of all, astronomers look for a star. That’s because our own Earth moves around a star (the Sun). More importantly, it is the correct distance (距离) from the Sun for heat and light. So when astronomers have found the star, they look at the planets around it. In recent years, astronomers have found nearly 400 new planets with stars. However, many of these planets are either too near to the star or too far away.
However, if the planet is in a good position, astronomers look for three key things: water, air and rock. Water is important because all life needs water. Humans can drink it and they can also grow plants with water. And plants produce air for humans to breathe and food to eat. Rock on a planet is also important. That’s because there is often water under the rock.
After many years of scrutinizing, astronomers have found a planet that is similar to the Earth. It’s Gliese 581g and it’s near a star. The astronomers think it has water and rock and the average (平均的) temperature is between -31℃ and -12℃. That’s cold, but not colder than Antarctica or Arctic Circle, for example, Gliese 581g is bigger than the Earth. A year on Gliese 581g is only 37 Earth days instead of 365. But astronomers do not think there are big differences and some them thing Gliese 581g will be a new Earth. However, Gliese 581g is twenty light years from the Earth.
1. What do astronomers have to find first before starting to look for a new place for humans to live?A.A new star. | B.A new planet. | C.Some heat. | D.Some light. |

Gui Haichao is a young professor at Beihang University. On May 30, 2023, he arrived at China’s space station by Shenzhou XVI spacecraft. He has become an idol for numerous people in China overnight.
Gui grew up in a rural family in Shi Dian County, Yunnan Province. He loved science as a child. He kept a set of encyclopedias (百科全书) from which he gained a lot of knowledge about space. In his second year of high school, he listened to the campus radio and got the news of Yang Liwei’s first space flight for China. Suddenly, he felt excited, and his interest in exploring (探索) space began. After his college entrance examination, Gui placed first in science in his county, and he was admitted to Beihang University.
“I wasted no time in applying,” Gui remembered the moment when he found the notice. In 2018, China made a plan to recruit (招募) its third group of astronauts. After several rounds of selection for more than two years, Gui stood out among about 2,500 candidates and became one of the four selected payload experts.
Over the past few years, Gui has got survival training (生存训练) in deserts and been trained to handle those complex (复杂的) equipment (设备). He learned to do experiments in the space environment. The training was a great challenge for him. “I felt very dizzy often,” said Gui. “So I added exercise and used some methods used by pilots.”
As a teacher, Gui was strict about studying. When reviewing essays for students, he would always give the right advice in detail. Gui would sometimes list 30 to 40 suggestions, even pointing out incorrect images. In the eyes of his students, Gui is positive (乐观的) and open-minded, seldom affected by a bad mood. In the face of setbacks (挫折), he quickly cheers himself up and gets back to his work with passion (激情).
Gui has done space experiments in many fields. “I believe that we can finish the mission with our team’s efforts,” he said proudly.
