In the Chinesehistory, writing tools play an important role. Among them, the writing brush is the first one that should be paid attention to.
The beginning of the writing brush in China can date back to (追溯到) the Neolithic Age (新石器时代), while its popularity was during the Warring States period (战国时期). This tool is widely used in Chinese writing and painting.
Nowadays, calligraphy (书法) classes are taught to students at school. Teachers teach students how to use the writing brush to enjoy and spread traditional Chinese culture. The soft brush can create strong and powerful lines on paper. But that only comes through years of hard work. If you want to be an excellent writing artist and be highly praised by others, you need to keep practicing for a long time every day.
For many Chinese artists, the brush is more than a writing tool. “It seems in my blood, when I pick up the writing brush, suddenly my thoughts, ideas and even stories build a relationship with the brush,” said Liu Qinghe, a famous Chinese artist. With a good writing brush, when we put our ideas into it, we give it life.

Many companies use guards and expensive alarm systems to protect their property (财产). Soon a new kind of protection will be used—robots. Engineers have been working on the first mobile robots for businesses. The robots will guard factories, warehouses (仓库) and museums at night.
The mobile robots will move around slowly on wheels. They will be able to detect (察觉,发现) people through walls and pick up sounds, such as breaking glass. They can be fixed with loud sirens to frighten thieves, or radios to signal police or guards.
To protect a building, a robot will have to move around without knocking into the walls. Information about the building will have to be stored in the robot’s small, built-in computer. A floor map could be programmed into the computer’s memory, for example.
A mobile robot will not be able to do everything. Unlike human guards, it will not be able to climb stairs, open doors, or move along rough ground. It won’t be able to tell the difference between friends and enemies. Because of that, people will have to be prevented from entering the area it moves.
One kind of mobile robot will be able to “sense” whether a chair or a box has been moved and go around it. This robot will also judge size well enough so that it won’t send an alarm if a cat crosses the room. And if someone tries to steal this robot, it will sound a loud, painful siren. The three-foot-tall robot is hard to be stolen anyway. It weighs about 200 pounds.
U.S. companies pay almost $10 billion a year to protect their property with alarm systems and human guards. Mobile robots may be cheaper. (296)

The mask has a remote-control mouth. You just need to push down a lever to open a slot in the front of the mask so that you can eat the food. When you take out your eating utensil (餐具), it will close.
The company says the mask can protect people from the virus while they eat. It plans to start selling the mask in the coming months at a price of ¥6-20 higher than that of a regular medical mask.
People have different opinions about the mask. John says it’s a must-have because it helps him to eat while staying safe. But Ron thinks it won’t work when he eats ice cream. He doesn’t want to wear it because the mask will get dirty. But it is fine for solid (固体的) foods like meat.
Besides this kind of mask, people create some other cool inventions during these days. For example, a Chinese company invented a fever-catching helmet (头盔). It can catch people with fevers from up to five meters away. At the same time, it can show the person’s name and medical history, and send this information to nearby hospitals. A Belgian 3D printing company designed a hands-free set. With its help, people can open doors without using their hands. People can use their arms or elbows to open doors instead.
1. Which is the similarity (相同点) of the cool inventions?A.They are made in the same company. |
B.They can make less touch between people. |
C.They are only useful during the virus breakout. |
D.They don’t need to get on the Internet. |

In March, 2018, Baidu was given a license (许可证) to test its self-driving cars in Beijing, China Daily reported. Self-driving cars have been in development since 2010, when Google announced (宣布) that it was making such cars. Since then, companies (公司) like Tesla, Uber and Baidu have been working to produce and test their own self-driving cars.
Self-driving cars are expected to change the way we get around. They are safer and more environmentally friendly than regular cars. They can remove the stress (压力) of driving and allow disabled or blind people to get around more easily.
But self-driving cars have their own disadvantages as well. In one test, researchers pointed a laser pointer (激光棒) at the car’s sensors (感应器) while it was moving. The car mistakenly (错误地) thought that the laser beam (波束) was in its way and slowed down and changed directions.
The software (软件) that is used to direct the cars may not be safe enough, reported Live Science. Sometimes, without any reasons, it may break down when we use our computers or smartphones. If the software in a self-driving car happened to crash (崩溃), the results could be deadly. Maybe improvements of the software could solve this problem.
