My mother often encouraged me whenever things weren’t going my way. After I left college in 1932, I decided to find a job in a radio station as a sports announcer (解说员). I tried my best but failed.
In one station, a kind lady told me that big stations wouldn’t hire (雇佣) a person who had little experience and she said that I should try my luck at some smaller stations. Also, there were fewer big stations than small ones. Following her advice, I went back to my hometown—Dixon. There were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, and my father said a newly-opened store wanted a local (当地的) sportsman to work for it. I tried but was refused again.
Although things didn’t go well as I planned, my mother still cared about me. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director (导演) , Peter MacArthur, told me that they had already hired an announcer. When I left his office, I felt upset. How can I become a sports announcer if I can’t get a job in a radio station?” I asked myself. While I was waiting for the lift, I heard someone calling. It was Peter MacArthur, “Man, do you know anything about football?” Then he asked me to report a soccer game online. After that, he gave me a chance to work there. On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words, “ _____________” I knew my mother was always there for me, so what she said really cheered me up.

Since 2007, the dispatchers in the center have been drawing maps of the local areas.
“A dispatcher’s job is counted in seconds, ” says Liang Ruimei, a dispatcher in the center. She has been working in the center since it started in 2007. “We must answer the phone in 3 seconds, get clear information about the patient in 60 seconds and dispatch (调度) emergency medical workers in 3 minutes at most. If we save one second, the patient may have a better chance to live.”
Although nowadays the center has electronic maps, the dispatchers still walk through the streets to draw maps by hand.
After many years’ hard work, the dispatchers keep every building and street of the city in mind. They even know whether or not a car can enter the gate of a building. Sometimes the caller can’t tell clearly where he is, but it doesn’t matter. As long as he describes the buildings around, the dispatcher can dispatch emergency medical workers to him.
“We are trying to be quicker than Death,” says Liang.

The fans came in different shapes and were made from all kinds of materials. Palm (棕桐) leaf fans were cheap and easy to make. Feather fans showed the owner’s high position. Sandalwood (檀香) fans could send out a sweet smell.
Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool people down. They developed into works of art, in which tuanshan-round fans and zheshan-folded fans were the most common.
In the shape of a full moon, the round fans mean union and happiness. They had beautiful embroidery (刺绣) featuring birds and flowers on them, representing (代表) wealth and longevity. Women, especially those in the imperial palace (皇宫), liked to use them. Such fans were very popular in the Han Dynasty (202 BC—AD 204). Folding fans were first produced in the Song Dynasty (960—1279) and became popular in the Ming Dynasty(1368— 1644). They have a history of symbolizing scholarship. Men, especially the literati (文人), used zheshan because they were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their skills in literature, painting and calligraphy (书法). Many things were painted on zheshan, but the most popular choice was usually landscapes (风景).
Today, Chinese people still use these fans, though not many people write or paint on them any more.

As teenagers, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize, or they can be very small, such as becoming one of the best students in your class.
Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream come true?
Andrew Mattews, an Australian writer tells us that making dreams come true is the biggest challenge(挑战)in life. You may think that you’re not very good at some school subjects, or that it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of ideas stop you from realizing your dream.
Remember your dream and don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster, because a big dream in fact, is made up of many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream. There will be difficulties on the way to your dream, but the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will help you get better exam results, while saving 30 yuan instead of buying a toy means you can buy a new book.
As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good because you have the chance to learn more skills and find new interests.
