The compass(指南针)is one of the Four Great inventions of Ancient China. Before the compass was invented, people depended on the position of the sun and stars to tell them the direction when at sea, which only worked when it wasn’t cloudy. As early as the Warring States Period. Chinese people discovered that a magnet could show the south and the north, and, on the basis of this feature, they made a southward-pointing instrument that was the model of the compass. The instrument was made up of a smooth magnetic spoon and a copper(铜)plate carved with directions;the handle of the spoon pointed south. In the Song dynasty, people combined an artificially(人造地)magnetized compass with an azimuth(方位)plate to create proper compass.
In the Northern Song dynasty, the compass was being used for sailing. In the Southern Song dynasty, its use spread to Arabia and Europe, and Arabs called it “the Eye of Sailors”. The invention of the compass had great influence on sailing, opening up a new chapter(篇章)in the history of the world sailing. Thus, Zheng He made seven ocean journeys across seas to Southeast Asia and around Indian Ocean in the early Ming dynasty, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World, and Ferdinand Magellan sailed round the world.

②Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can judge a person’s “happiness” or “fear” level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products or advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.
③Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people’s ages and five levels of feelings—from “very happy” to “very unhappy”.
④Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers’ experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.
⑤Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy (隐私) group, is one of them. She thinks ________. For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person’s age and feelings.
⑥However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn’t store people’s information like names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn’t keep any personal information or record any videos.
1. What can facial detection technology tell according to the passage?A.People’s weight. | B.People’s feelings. | C.People’s height. | D.People’s jobs. |

Nikola Tesla and his inventions are well known to people in the area of science and electricity, but not quite known to the general public today. Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-born inventor, who later moved to the US. He is most well-known for his inventions in the area of electricity and electrical engineering. He is considered one of the greatest electrical engineers in history.
Why was Nikola Tesla not appreciated while others in his time became so famous to the public? Some say Nikola Tesla failed to make the right business decisions. Others say it was because of his, “mad scientist” qualities(特质)—the same qualities that helped him come up with some of his best ideas. His qualities worked against him, leading him to many strange ideas. Towards his last years, he played with many ideas that seemed unacceptable to the public at that time. He worked very hard on them, which made people think he was mad.
Many of Tesla’s inventions and patents didn’t end up being used in the exact way he had planned for them. Some of those include his high-frequency lighting ideas, wireless power and the free energy receiver.
If you are interested in green energy and reducing your electricity bill, check out products that are based on Tesla’s work. They help create green energy at home, without relying on the electricity companies and without paying them. They save people money through producing electricity at home, based on Nikola Tesla’s inventions.
Tesla has too many inventions, and more than 250 patents are under his name. However, he never really made a lot of money out of them. He had a bigger dream: to provide free energy for all.
Nikola Tesla is not alone. There are many other inventors in history that invented many useful things but are not known to the public…
