An updated edition of Shenzhen maps, 2020 Atlas of Shenzhen, was released Wednesday ahead of the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. The atlas, a collection of maps of Shenzhen, illustrates the city’s achievements over 40 years from economic, ecological, social, environmental, cultural and geographic perspectives.
The atlas was designed by Wang Jiaoyao and Guo Renzhong, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering(中国工程院院士). It covers not only traditional geographic data, but also vast amounts of data relating to the ecological environment, scientific innovation, education, medical care, elderly care, housing, public facilities(设施), greenways and parks.
Some “dark technologies” in mapping, such as night light remote sensing imaging and indirect photography MESH model, have been applied. Shenzhen is the first Chinese city that has realized production of a citywide real-time 3D model. It presents the city’s skylines and skyscrapers from Futian CBD towards Nanshan District. It allows people to immerse(沉浸) themselves into Shenzhen’s spatial(空间的) environment and experience the urban glamour(魅力) personally. It provides a strong visual impact to viewers by presenting the urban areas and their construction from a 45-degree angle.
Nan Zhaoxu, a scholar in nature and the history of Shenzhen, was the first citizen to receive the atlas. “I am glad that my suggestions on environment protection were taken into consideration. It is the first atlas in China that adopted environment-friendly materials and techniques that reduce pollution and save energy,” said Nan.

Learning how to read well in English might not be an easy task.
Choose right reading materials (材料).
There are so many choices! There are textbooks and graded readers, but there are also a lot more books you can read.
Be intentional (意图明确的).
Being intentional means doing something on purpose with a reason in mind. With reading, you need to be intentional by setting a reading aim. Decide on a certain number of pages you want to read each day.
Reading can both introduce you to new vocabulary (词汇) and teach you how to use them. Many words in English are often used together in a consistent (相互连贯的) way. Reading groups of words, or words that go together, will help you better understand how to use your new vocabulary.

But his friend thinks that living conditions have improved a lot and humans are still kind today. So what do you think?
②Just like Aaron Whiteside, nostalgic people think people lived more happily with less in the past. In the old days, people sat around a table together, sharing food and conversations. But now most UK families spend about 20 minutes on supper before hurrying off. Families know less about each other’s lives. There is much more pressure on making a living.
③Besides, people bought fewer things in the past, which was better for the environment and made people more creative. For example, bands from the 1960s, such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, were much better than today’s. Creative expression is now being lost to technology and greed.
④___▲___. In their opinion, both men and women are able to live how they like now. However, women’s position was quite low in the past because they were expected to stay at home, looking after babies and doing a lot of housework. Most women led a boring life at that time.
⑤What’s more, it is agreed that children get better education today. That’s because there are more schools and colleges in the modern society. Thanks to technology development, we live in a shared world where we share information, services and culture, and that teaches us new perspectives (视角).

Walls are no stranger to the Chinese people in the long history. They built yard walls to keep thieves and animals away from their villages; they built city walls to protect people from enemies; also, they built the Great Wall to safeguard their country.
The “wall culture” continues for centuries, and lots of money has been spent to build walls around housing areas, campuses (校园) , or even a public park. But with the development of the society and a safer environment, people realize that building walls may waste money and space.
Walls around some community squares and public parks in cities have given way to fences (围栏). In some cities, even the fences have disappeared. Several years ago, Beijing took the lead in taking down the fences in free public parks. People were worried that the fruits and plants would be stolen overnight and the grass could be destroyed within a few days. But that didn’t happen, showing that people know what is good and what is not for both the city and themselves.
★ It is reported that some new universities have no boundary walls (边界墙) now. Without physical walls, maybe there are no boundaries in academics (学术), either. Also, the wall-less campuses are believed to be friendly to a more open society. Students who have been separated from the realities (现实) of the world need to step out of their “ivory towers” and experience the society from different angles. Perhaps the open society and wall-less campuses can encourage unexpected creative ideas.
However, taking down walls in campuses still has a long way to go. Traditional beliefs and habits among people are still strong. Most universities don’t want to take down the boundary walls. They worry that it may bring danger to the school safety and bother the students and staff members there as they can’t focus their attention.
Although some efforts to take down physical walls have failed, it doesn’t matter. Tearing down the walls in our minds is more important. An open “no-wall” attitude is indeed a trend (趋势) of the future.

It is a country, in northern Europe. It is home to Santa Claus and the game Angry Birds. And it was recently said to be the world's happiest country. It's Finland(芬兰)!
According to this year's United Nations World Happiness Report, Finland topped 156 countries and regions to get the title of the world's happiest country. The ranking(排名)considers six key factors(因素)—income(收入), freedom, trust, healthy life expectancy(预期健康寿命), social support, and generosity(慷慨).
What made Finland stand out? Why are its 5. 5 million people so happy?
One reason is the country's history of equality(平等), the Guardian reported. The Finnish government has worked hard to reach a balance between men and women, workers and bosses, and foreigners and locals.
Finland successfully cut the size of its homeless population between 2014 and 2016. The lifestyles of the rich and poor in Finland are not too different, The Economist noted.
Making sure of equality encourages people to build trust, over 80 percent of Finns trust the country's police, education and healthcare systems. People there live in a pleasant and safe environment.
The Finns also have a positive attitude(态度)toward life. There is a word that describes this attitude—"sisu". It means the ability to stay strong during difficult times. This helps the Finns deal with stress and worry, as well as keeps them happy and energetic.

That’s why a 30-member Chinese survey team set out to reach the peak of Qomolangma to remeasure its height on May 6, 2020. They were equipped(配备) with the latest technology, including a global navigation satellite system receiver (接收器) and a radar (雷达).
It is not an easy task. The average air temperature on the mountain is -29 ℃—four degrees lower than that in Antarctica and powerful winds blow all the time. In such bad conditions, surveying drones (无人机) cannot work at the peak of the mountain. That’s why it’s still necessary to send human experts to the peak to get reliable (可靠的) results.
But does a difference of a few meters really matter when it comes to a high mountain?
In fact, measuring the height of Qomolangma is about more than just getting one exact number. Mount Qomolangma is at the point where the Eurasian plate(板块) meets the Indian plate. It formed 38 million years ago as the two plates hit each other. Changes in the peak’s height can show whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other. This can help us understand the movement of Earth’s crust (地壳).
The survey team will also get firsthand information about environmental conditions at the top of the mountain. This will help us understand how climate change has affected the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau.
1. What do we know from the first paragraph?A.Researchers measure the height of Qomolangma every year. | B.There is no agreement upon height of Qomolangma at present. |
C.It’s not easy to measure the height of Qomolangma. | D.The height of Qomolangma increases every year. |

However, the pictures we see on TV and social media can give us improper ideas about how our bodies “should” look. The truth is that everybody is different—and that’s a good thing. Accepting and feeling good about our bodies is really important for our self confidence.
②Body confidence is when someone accepts and behaves kindly towards their body. That includes our size and shape, skin color, appearance and any physical disabilities. Jade Parnell from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), says that having body confidence is “about accepting your body and what it does for you”.
③Research has even shown if you have body confidence, you may take part in more activities and perform better in school. However, feeling worried about your body could make you step back, do less well at school and even feel down. Parnell says that the cost of trying to achieve the “perfect” appearance is high. She says, “If you’re spending a lot of time trying to look a certain way, you will have less time to spend with friends and to make important memories.”
④It’s important to remember that everybody is different. To develop a positive body image, Parnell says, “Try to talk positively about your own body and other people’s bodies. Try not to pay too much attention to appearance. Instead, think about what your body does for you; do your legs make you run really fast?” She also suggests treating your body well by eating different kinds of foods, exercising to feel good and to have fun, and getting plenty of sleep. Remember that you are more than how you look.
1. The writer thinks that the pictures on TV and social media _________.A.are perfect for people to follow | B.show everyone is different |
C.may spread wrong ideas of looks | D.show people how to behave kindly |
