I have to travel every day from Souk Road to the airport. Two buses travel along the routes: the No. 49 bus and the No. 16 bus. But by the time the No. 16 bus reaches Souk Road, it is always full, so I can’t get on it. I have to wait for the No. 49 bus because sometimes there are empty seats in it. The timetable says that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If this is true, why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day?
The rules say that if there are empty seats on a bus, the bus must stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why do the half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop? The rules say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers. Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when it reached the airport. I counted the other passengers as they got off. There were 129 people.
It is clear that our bus companies break the rules and think little of their passengers. Can nothing be done to make your service better?
I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
John

On April 10, more than 60 students from a middle
school of Xi'an took port in the One Yuan Metropolis
Survival. Students not only have to live, but also have to

Some made use of their talents by singing and dancing in parks or shopping malls. Many
people who walked by took notice and helped them. Zhao Jiacheng,14, drew pictures and made
paper crafts (手工). "This showed it’s important to learn a special skill,” he said.
Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasn't any easier. They went to different places to
finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth
thousands of yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. "We learned how to explain to others. From a balloon to a cake to a bottle of yogurt... after almost 20 tries, we succeed,” he said. They
will give all the money they made to poor schools in Tibet.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees-anywhere at all!
Because of the many changes in computer technology , laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.
At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “ Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

A small car can hold four persons and a large car can hold six persons, but it is very crowded. A van holds seven persons easily, so a family with three children can ask their grandparents to travel together.
Mr. King and his wife had a third child last year. This made them sell a second car and then buy a van. There are seven seats in the van, and two of them are used to put things on, for a family of five must carry many suitcases (手提箱) when they travel. When they arrive at their grandparents’ home, the suitcases are put into the two seats. And then they can carry their grandparents.
Americans call vans motor homes. A motor home is always used for holidays. When a family is travelling to the mountains or to the seaside, they can live in their motor home for a few days or weeks. All the members of a big family can enjoy a happier life when they are travelling together. That is why motor homes have become very popular. In America there are many parks for motor homes.

Daisy lives in the mountains. There are no roads to her house except a track (小径) through the forest. It would take two hours for Daisy to walk to school, which is on the other side of a river. To go to school, she must cross the river.
Daisy’s village is so small that there are not enough people to pay for a bridge. So, the people put cables (缆绳) over the rivet. They hook (勾) themselves onto the cable. Then they slide (滑) across the river. This is the way that Daisy goes to school.
Daisy has her own pulley (滑轮). She has a rope and a stick, too. She hooks the pulley onto the cable. She makes a seat with the rope. Then she sits on the rope and pushes off the ground. Far, far below her she can see the river. It is a very fast trip for Daisy. It only takes her one minute to go to the other side. As Daisy gets close to the other side, she must use her stick. Daisy presses the stick onto the cable. When she does this, sparks (火星) fly off the cable. When she finds it’s the time, she jumps into an old tyre (轮胎). The tyre helps her to stop.
Daisy is old enough to ride the cable by herself. Some children are too young to ride alone. They have to go in a cloth bag. All of the family come to watch a child’s first ride. The children must be shown what to do. They must know how to use the stick.
The cable is the only way to cross the river quickly. It is the only way Daisy can get to school on time.
