“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But when someone says to his friend “How are you?”, he likes the answer “fine” even when his friend isn’t fine. It’s because that “How are you?” isn’t really a question, and “fine” isn’t really an answer. They are common(常见的)ways of saying “Hello” and “Hi”.

Sometimes people also don’t say just what they think. For example, when someone asks, “Do you think so?” the other one may be thinking, “No, I don’t think so. I think you are wrong.” But it doesn’t sound very friendly, so they may say, “I’m not so sure.” It’s a nice way to say that you don’t think the same as your friend.

It’s fun when people want to finish talking. For example, when a man wants to finish talking he may say “I have to go now.” Sometimes he often gives an excuse, “Someone is at the door”, “Something is burning” and so on. The excuse may be real, or it may not. It’s a nice way to stop a conversation(对话)and it doesn’t hurt your friend’s feelings. People don’t always say just what they are thinking. And it’s a part of the game of speaking.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲英国人不喜欢直接说yes或no,他们会用其他的语言来代替,这会让人有点困惑。

【推荐3】British people often feel embarrassed about replying to offers with the word “no”. It feels impolite for them, especially when speaking to strangers. This can be very confusing (不解的) for people from other countries, especially if they are not fluent (流利的) English speakers.

One of the first things you learn when you start studying English is how to answer if somebody offers you something. “Yes, please” and “No, thank you” are probably the best-known phrases in the language. Yet British people often say, “I’m all right, thanks” when you offer them something. When they say this, they mean that they have already got everything that they need and don’t need anything else. This is a way to say no without being impolite. However, British people often say “all right” when they want to say yes to an offer. The same word can be used in different ways to say both yes and no, and sometimes differences in pronunciation are the only clues (线索) to understanding.

Mandy is an assistant in a shop selling gifts and tours to tourists. “It’s very difficult to understand what British customers want,” she says. “I ask them if they want to buy something and they tell me that they are all right. Often when I ask if they want to go on a tour, they say, ‘Maybe later’, but really they don’t want it and may never come back to the shop.”

“Even when they want to say yes, it’s confusing,” says Mandy. “They say, ‘Sure’ or ‘Why not?’ instead. Why can’t British people just say what they mean? It’s so confusing!”

1. Why don’t the British people like saying no?
A.They don’t like to speak to strangers.
B.Saying no is confusing for them to express their ideas.
C.They don’t think it’s polite to say no.
D.They are not good at English.
2. When British people want to accept an offer, they may probably reply ________.
A.Why not?B.I’m all right, thanks.
C.Maybe later.D.No, thanks.
3. What is the purpose of giving the example of Mandy?
A.Because Mandy is just like a typical British woman.
B.To show how confusing it is to understand British people’s ways of saying yes or no.
C.To express how important it is to be a fluent English speaker.
D.To show better communication is necessary to understand each other.
