It was said that sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Liang. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. Sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations today. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Chinese paper-cutting has been around for more than 1,500 years. It may sound very easy but is difficult to practise. The paper, usually red, is folded (折叠) before it is cut with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, animals and things about Chinese history. During the Spring Festival, they are put up on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
Chinese clay (泥塑) art is famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real. The pieces are carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to air-dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. Then they are painted after polishing (抛光). Finally, materials such as wood or paper are added as decorations (装饰). It takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty.

It’s important to have positive (积极的) feelings in our daily lives. Compared with some unhappy people those who are always pleased and relaxed are less likely (可能的) to get colds, according to a new study. The researchers from New York University said, “Being happy helps the body prevent (预防) diseases.”
“It seems that positive feelings may reduce (减少) the possibility of illnesses,” said the researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen’s team interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. In this period, the people told researchers about their happy or sad feelings that day. Two weeks later, all of them were made to catch colds by doctors, and they had to stay alone in a room for six days.
The results showed that each in the study was equal (平等的) to fall ill. But people who were lively and relaxed said they felt happy during the research. Their illnesses were less serious and lasted (持续) for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people have positive feelings, their bodies may produce a kind of chemical (化学物质) that helps to fight illnesses. So if you care about your health, please look on the bright side and make yourself happy all the time.

If you do not use your arms or legs for a long time, they become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. But many people do not know that memory works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it a chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault(过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame (负责), and few of us know that it is just his own fault.
Have you ever noticed that some people who can’t read or write usually have better memories? This is because they can’t read or write and they have to remember things with their mind – they can’t write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so they are always exercising their memories.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from those people: practice remembering.
1. Does memory work in the same way as arms and legs?2. Do your arms and legs become strong or weak when you use them a lot?
3. What do most of us think of the people with poor memories?
4. Why do the people who can’t read or write usually have better memories?
5. What is the main idea of the passage?
