Scientists around the world are racing to create and test vaccines (疫苗) to help protect people against the novel corona vinus (新冠病毒). They are making progress, but it will be quite a while before any vaccines are ready.
There are many different ways to make vaccines. At least 115 different vaccines for the novel corona virus are being developed around the world right now. Many of them may not work or may have side effects that can be dangerous. That is why testing is very important. Before a vaccine is ever tested on humans, it’s first tested on animals to make sure it seems safe.
Testing the vaccine on humans is done in several different phases (阶段). In Phase 1, a small group of people are given small amounts of the vaccine to see if it has any bad effects. Phase 2 still tests the vaccine’s safety, but it’s mainly a test to see if the vaccine seems to work. If Phase 2 goes well, the vaccine can begin Phase 3. During Phase 3, the vaccine is tried on a much larger group of people to see how well it works. Because of the serious and world-wide impact (影响) of the novel corona virus, there is huge pressure (迫切) to develop a working vaccine quickly. It normally takes seven or more years to develop a safe vaccine that works well.
Now drug companies are hoping to create working vaccines in 12 or 18 months. But health experts also warn that rushing too much could be dangerous. A vaccine with harmful effects could cause more problems than it solves.

Because of a sudden rise of COVID-19 cases in several Chinese cities, the country is making five COVID-19 antigen test kits (抗原检测试剂盒) available for self-testing, All made by local companies, the kits can be bought in stores and online.
Antigen tests are used to test for COVID-19. But they work differently from the nucleic acid tests (核酸检测) that we are all familiar with. “Antigen is like the ‘clothes’ of the virus, while nucleic acid is the gene (基因) of the virus,” said Zhang Wenhong, head of the infectious disease department (感染科) at Fudan University’s Huashan Hospital.
The antigen tests are beneficial because they produce results faster, in around 15 minutes, and don’t require a lab. People can use them in their own homes at their convenience.
But they aren’t as accurate . “In the early stage of infection, the amount of virus can be very low,” Zhang said. “The nucleic acid test can detect it but an antigen test cannot.”
According to the National Health Commission, three categories of people will be able to take an antigen test. They are people who have had a fever or respiratory symptoms (呼吸道症状) within five days, people undergoing centralized or home isolation (隔离), and other people who just want to take a test.
People who test positive with the antigen kits will be treated as COVID-19 cases and must contact local authorities immediately, said the State Council. They will need to undergo centralized quarantine (隔离) and have regular nucleic acid tests, reported China Daily.
At this time, China is sticking to its zero-COVID policy. With the Omicron variant producing more asymptomatic (无症状的) cases, it is hoped that the introduction of antigen tests will help authorities to find infected people more rapidly, said Zhang.
