Queen Elizabeth II was the first British Monarch to visit China! In October 1986 she visited China and met Deng Xiaoping. She went to some big cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an, and visited the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and other landmarks.

Then a few years ago, Jenny and I were in a car accident. She was okay, but I had a large scar (伤疤) on my face. I was very sad. Jenny told me I shouldn’t worry about the scar.
One day we were riding home from school on the bus. A boy named Jordan made fun of me about my scar. This went on for about a month. Finally I broke down and told Jenny about him. She was angry.
When Jordan made fun of me the next time, Jenny stood up, walked to where he was sitting and said something into his ear. I didn’t know exactly what she said, but Jordan never said a single word to me again.
So, even though getting all of the hand-me-downs might not be the best, I was very happy to have a big sister like Jenny.
When anyone asks now, I will tell them, “Yes, I’m Jenny’s little sister.”

He came up with a series of questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the world around us. The poem showed his doubts about traditional ideas and the spirit of finding the truth.
Inspired by the great poet, China has named its upcoming series of planetary exploration missions (行星探测任务) after the poem. The first one in the series—a Mars exploration mission—has been named Tianwen 1, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on April 24, China’s Space Day. This shows China’s desire (渴望) to explore the universe and discover its secrets.
China has been making great progress in space exploration. As early as 1970, China launched its first man-made Earth satellite (卫星), becoming the fifth country in the world to launch a man-made satellite independently. Since 2003, China has carried out six Shenzhou manned missions and launched two space labs into Earth’s orbit (轨道). China’s moon exploration missions—the Chang’e series—started in 2007. In December 2018, China became the first country to send the probe (探测器) Chang’e 4 to the moon’s far side, which always faces away from Earth.
The Tianwen series will follow the Shenzhou and Chang’e series and move further into space. The first step is to launch a Mars probe this year, which will mark the start of China’s exploration of the Red Planet. The probe is expected to orbit (绕……轨道运行), land on and explore Mars in one mission. If it succeeds, it will be the first to complete all of these tasks in one mission. The Long March 5 rocket will send the probe to Mars. It will take seven months to reach the planet and land.
After this mission, China plans to visit Mars again in 2028, aiming to collect soil from the surface of the planet and bring it to Earth. Around 2030, China will explore Jupiter and several asteroids (小行星), according to CNSA.

Sweden is Northern Europe’s largest country. Known for its natural beauty, Sweden is also home to Stockholm, the capital city made up of 14 islands. Here are several interesting facts about this Land of the Midnight Sun.
People in Sweden can enjoy only a few hours of light in winter. Or if people live above the Arctic Circle, none at all. To keep safe in the dark, Swedes have different ways of seeing and being seen. Many places are lighted with high-powered spotlights, and kids wear reflectors sewn onto their clothes. Drivers keep their eyes open because they know children will be outside in the dark.
Being close to the Arctic Circle also means months of ice. Ice is especially good for sparking, which is both a form of transportation and a fun choice for walking. “Spark” means “kick” in Swedish, which is what a person does-kicks the spark along the ice while holding onto the back of the little seat and standing on one blade.
When it comes to waste management, Sweden is ahead of its time. Swedes recycle nearly 50% of what they throw away. What about the other half? This is what makes Sweden different from the rest of the world: the waste goes to a power station where it is burned and changed into energy. In 2016, Sweden even began bringing waste from other countries. In this way, Sweden gets 100 million dollars every year.

“I want you, my boy, to do your duty in whatever work or task given to you. Also do not be too sure of anything,” he replied. “When I see people, as the saying goes, ‘never count chickens before they are hatched (孵化)”, it makes me think of the famous Napoleon.”
“When Napoleon was ruling over France, and had beaten most of Europe, he wanted to rule over England, too. He was so sure of beating England that he chose the day and time he would come over and enter London as the winner.

President Xi considers employment(就业)“pivotal”(至关重要)to people’s well-being(福祉). He supports e-commerce and the new economy, which create jobs that never existed before.
Every day in China about 16, 500 new enterprises are established, and 40,000 people find new jobs in towns and cities.
In total, China has created more than 80 million new urban jobs over the past seven years, equal to the entire German population.
China now has the world’s largest courier delivery service market, employing more than 3 million people, who send everything from meals to fridges around the country. Earlier this year, Xi paid a surprise visit to a tiny delivery station in Beijing and chatted with a group of deliverymen.
This closeness to the people is not a singular event. For the past seven years, Xi has spent time with regular people before every Chinese New Year: giving them festival gifts, observing festive traditions such as food preparation.
“CPC members must wholeheartedly serve the people,” Xi often reminds Party cadres.
He has said that he understands the hardships of the people because he once lived in an impoverished corner of the country. He has been known to check the toilets and wash-rooms of ordinary homes, offer advice on garbage sorting, and show concern for students’ poor eyesight.
In 2013, Xi put forward “targeted poverty alleviation”(定向扶贫)and set a goal to eliminate extreme rural poverty by 2020, more than 82 million Chinese people left poverty behind. Xi said extreme poverty “would be historically solved in the hands of our generation”.
Kishore Mahbubani, a professor at the National University of Singapore said the most outstanding achievement of China in the last 70 years had been the dramatic improvement in the living conditions of the people.
Reviewing China’s long history. Mahbubani said even at previous peaks of glory, the bottom 50 percent of the population had to struggle to make ends meet. But today even low-income people have access to nutritious food, education, housing, employment and even the ability to travel.
“There is no doubt that, in terms of the living conditions of the people, the past 70 years have been the best years in China’s history.” he said.

For some people, Fidel Castro was a hero. He freed his country from the control of the United States. Others hated him – there were 638 attempts to murder him. But no one would say that the bearded Castro, who always dressed in green, was not a fighter.
In 2008, the 81-year-old president of Cuba (古巴) stepped down, saying that his poor health kept him from leading his country any longer. “Years of fighting against the US have led to it,” said one professor in Cuba.
Castro was born in 1926, to a rich family of Cuban sugar planters. Although the young Castro was born into wealth, he himself became a fighter for the poor. At 13, he organized a strike because his father treated his workers badly. In middle school, he helped poor students get meat in their school meals.
After college, Castro became a lawyer. He saw that Cuba was “a millionaire’s playground” of rich US businessmen. He made up his mind to help Cuba free itself from US control.
In 1959 Castro led a revolution (革命) that brought him to power. Cuba became a socialist (社会主义的) country on the doorstep of the US. Although some tried to kill Castro and the US wouldn’t do business with Cuba – and even tried to invade (侵略) it – Cuba remained a peaceful country.
In 2006, Castro became very ill. Although he had left office, this fighter refused to give up. He spent his time writing for newspapers.
“I am not saying goodbye to you,” he wrote to Cubans. “But from now on I will be a soldier of ideas. You will be able to count on my words to help you.”
On Nov 25, 2016, Castro died at the age of 90.
