“Imagine that your home is on fire. You’re allowed to save one thing. Your family and pets are safe, so don’t worry about them. What is the most important thing you have? It can be any size.”
Linda Sue wrote a book The One Thing You’d Save. In it, a teacher named Ms. Chang invites her students to think of the question above. She wants to challenge her class to name the most important thing to them. Some students know the answer right away. Others come to their decisions more slowly. And some students change their minds when they hear their classmates’ answers. As for the answers, some choose baseball cards or toy animals. One picks a sweater that has been passed down for generations(代). Another chooses a box of memories about …
Even Ms. Chang shares her own choice in the end. It is a really thought-provoking(引人深思的) question. As the students are trying to answer it, they discover more about one another and themselves.
The book is a collection of poems. The writer tells the story through narrative(叙述的) poems. What makes the book popular is that it leads people to think deeply.
The book uses black-and-white pictures to show the objects the students choose. When seeing the pictures, people may think of scenes(场景) of their homes, the classroom and more.
The pictures offer wordless moments that encourage readers to think more before they move on.
Want to know what matters most to the students? Read this book.
1. What does Ms. Chang want to challenge her class to do?2. Why is the book The One Thing You’d Save popular?

Do you know of SQ3R? It is a reading method named for its five steps: survey, question, read, recite and review. Many students have begun using this method to better understand what they’re reading.
S=Survey
Survey here means to skim (略读) a book. This step helps you gather the information. Go through the pictures, the title or tables, if there are any. Read the first sentence. This survey step only takes 5—10 minutes, but it is very important.
Q=Question
Question means to ask yourself, “What’s the book about? What’s the writer trying to tell me?” Once you get an idea of what you’re going to read, then you can read with a better understanding.
3R=Read, Recite, Review
Read the book, looking for the answers to the questions you have had. Picture in your mind what the words are saying.
Recite the main ideas of what you just read in your mind, or write down the main ideas on paper in your own words.
Review what you have learned. Make notes to help you review.
Now you have a valuable study tool. Use it to help study for a test. Use it to help remember what you read. Use it to help understand important information.
1. It maybe takes2. You should ask questions because
3. You should recite
4. How can we make the tool of “SQ3R” valuable?
5. Please give a title to the passage. (不超过5词)
In the past two days, I’ve been to two very different bookstores. They were both in Beijing, and both attracted people in their 20s and 30s. So why were they so different? Because one store was for Chinese people, and one was for Westerners.
At the Western bookstore, in Sanlitun, the books put on display in front—the ones expected to be the most popular—were biographies (传记), books about history, and books about politics and current (现在的) events. Farther back, there was a big shelf full of novels.
At the Chinese store, at the Beijing airport, there were very few books on history, and books on politics and current events were even harder to find. There were a few biographies, but they seemed to be of an instructive (教育性的) nature; almost all of them were about rich people, and how they got rich. What the store did have was lots and lots of books on how to learn English.
As a Westerner, I found this surprising. The kinds of books I’m used to seeing people read—the kinds that were at the first store—are the kinds people read to escape (逃脱) their daily lives. But here most of the books were on how to get rich and how to study English—how to work better and how to study better.
These Chinese books offered no escape from daily life—only ways to improve it. Perhaps this is another area where Westerners and Chinese people can learn from each other. We Westerners could certainly read a bit more for practical purposes (目的). But I also think Chinese people might benefit (受益) from more of something my teachers always encouraged: Reading for fun.

My favorite travel book tells about a trip to Europe. The writer writes about walking through beautiful buildings in Italy and climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris in it.
Another reason I love to read is that it helps me. When I meet difficulties, I can read a story about someone who gets over a similar difficulty. When I’m sad, I can read a funny story that makes me laugh. Reading can give me hope and make me strong.
The main reason I enjoy reading is that I can travel in time and space. I can travel to the past and watch Leonardo da Vinci paint the Mona Lisa. I can have dinner with Queen Victoria. I can move next door to Beethoven and listen to music. It’s really fun. I can’t imagine life without reading.

These spaceships burn chemical fuels (燃料) and they are very expensive. Scientists say that a water-powered spaceship could make the trip to Mars much cheaper. The idea is just in the planning stages (阶段) now, but scientists think such a spaceship could be developed soon.
The key to the water-powered spaceship is the engine (发动机). Regular engines push spaceships by burning fuel. The water engine will use steam, created by solar panels (太阳能板) that heat water to a high temperature. Of course, the spaceship will have to carry a lot of water for the long trip to Mars.
Today’s spaceships could not carry that much water. But scientists think that a spaceship blown up like a balloon (气球) will be able to.
One US company has already developed a spaceship like this. These spaceships are made of a strong material (材料) . Two of them have already been sent up into space, using rockets and then later filled with air. “Balloon” spaceships could be very large and carry enough water for a long trip. With the “Balloon” spaceships, enough water could be carried to power (驱动) the engines and grow food during the trip. And the people on the spaceship might even get to take a hot bath!
Scientists say the biggest advantage of such a spaceship would be cost. The “Balloon” spaceship uses water to push it through space and costs about one thirtieth of a normal spaceship. Such savings naturally encourage continued research into “Balloon” spaceships and water engines. If these scientists are correct, we may soon be on our way to Mars in a spaceship powered by water.

3. What can water do for the spaceship trip?

Students all around the world think it great to have some money in their pocket. But how much do they get?
American kids and pocket money
Most American children think having pocket money will help them to understand money better. Here’s what some of them say:
Jacob---- I have to do 10 times of the housework a week to get pocket money.
Katty---- I get $20 twice a month. I put $5 in the bank and spend $15 on new stuff
Nathan, Sam---- We save half of our pocket money every week.
Amy---- I get $10 a week for doing the housework. I don’t get money if I don’t do that.
Amber---- I don’t save too much. I spend a lot when I go shopping.
Sam, Tess----We put our pocket money in the bank, and spend our birthday and Christmas money.
British children and pocket money
In London, children get 10 pounds every week, children in Scotland (苏格兰) get 8 pounds, and children in Wales (威尔士) get the most, about 13.5 pounds! Also, British boys get a little more pocket money than girls.
Like kids in the US, British children do the housework to earn their pocket money. That’s why British children know a lot about spending money. 7% of them spend less than £1 each week, 22% spend between £1 and £5, and 20% spend over £5 each week. What do they buy with their money? Most of them spend it on sweets, crisps (薯片) and chocolate.
Is it good to have pocket money?
Some parents may ask the question, the answer is: Of course yes! If children have some pocket money, they can learn to find out what things cost, save money for things that they want. There are lots of good lessons to learn:
If you spend it all at once, there is no money until your next “pay day” (发薪日).
If you bought the wrong thing, you’ll be more sensible (明智的) next time.
If you borrow money, you have to pay it back.

Today, an increasing number of people are always looking at their mobile phones with their heads down. These people are called the “Heads down Tribe(低头族)”. Are you a heads-down tribe member? Head-down tribe members now can be seen everywhere.
More and more traffic accidents happen because more drivers use mobile phones when they are driving. In order to make drivers pay more attention to driving, some new traffic rules have been made. For example, people who use mobile phones while driving are fined.
As we can see above, using mobile phones may cause accidents and even cost a lot of money. Also, more and more strange facts happen to the “Heads down Tribe”. We can often see people in the restaurant eating face to face but looking at their own mobile phones. It’s strange that they don’t talk to the ones who sit opposite to them during the meal. Some of them even have fun communicating with others on the phone.
Are mobile phones good or bad? It depends on how people use them.
