Life Skills Are Dying Out
Chris Hughes is a 24-year-old young man from the UK. He often wears the same clothes for a lot of days because he doesn’t know how to use a washing machine.
1 Hughes is not the only young person who doesn’t have basic life skills. According to a recent study by YouGov, today’s young people in the UK are less capable (能干的) than older generations (一代人) when it comes to simple life skills. For example, about 35 percent don’t know how to sew on a button (缝扣子), and 11 percent don’t understand how to change a light bulb or wash clothes.
2 According to Forbes (福布斯), many young people in the USA are losing the skill of cooking, as they like to order take-out food.
The development of technology may be the main reason for this problem. Born and raised in modern society, young people are always using smartphones and computers. 3
However, this does not mean young people cannot do daily chores. 4 For example, the study results show that although only 45 percent know how to pay their water and electricity bills, 72 percent could help set up a Wi-Fi network in a new house.
A. This is not a joke.
B. With GPS at hand, they don’t have to learn to read maps at all.

D. Young people in the United States have this problem as well.

I gave the young man I had rescued(救)bread and water. He was tired out and fell quickly asleep.
I guessed his age at around twenty-six. He was tall and strong and looked kind, especially when he smiled. He slept only about a half. Again he made gestures(手势)to show that he was grateful to me.
We communicated by gestures at first. Soon he showed himself much better at learning my language than I was at learning his. I told him I’m Robinson. I called him Friday, for it was on a Friday that I rescued him. He quickly learned “yes” and “no” and the names of many things.
At first, I didn’t completely trust Friday and he was separated from me in another room. But soon I found it unnecessary. Nobody would be more loyal than Friday. He seemed almost to consider me like a father. Friday was also willing to help in any way.
For the next three years, I taught Friday to use all my tools. I took him to see everything I had made. Friday was quick to help with the work on the island. One day, I showed Friday the ruin of the wreck(沉船). I explained that I had come upon the island the same way. That was when Friday told me the most amazing thing. He saw such a wreck before, not far from his home.
“We rescue the white men from drown.” he said.
I asked him how many men they had rescued, and he showed me on his fingers—seventeen. I was surprised at the idea of a group of Europeans so close. I took Friday to the highest point of the island where other lands could be seen. He began jumping and dancing.

When I was a tiny baby crying all night, my mom sang to me and stayed by my side.
When I was tired and hungry, she gave me food and warm arms to sleep in.
When I was two running through the field, she made sure I was safe and kept me from danger.
When I fell and hurt myself, she gave me a hug and lifted me up.
When I was seven coughing badly, she said no ice-cream for me.
But I talked back loudly, “I should be allowed to eat some! Give it to me now!”
When I was nine watching scary movies, she said it’d give me awful dreams.
But I talked back loudly again, “I should be allowed to watch it! I’m not a baby!”
When I was a teen going out with friends, she said, “please be back by ten!”
But I shouted back angrily—“I should not be told what to do! I’m seventeen now!”
Now I’m an adult, thinking back to those times:
I coughed for days after eating that ice-cream.
And had scary dreams after watching that film.
I was late for school from staying out past ten. I regret talking back, not listening to Mom.
Mom knows best, and for me she wanted only the best!

For students in Grade Nine, there is only one month left before graduation. How will they record their memories of the past three years?
Students in Class Six, Grade Nine at No. 1 Middle School got the chance to make a class magazine. Sun Hang is picked to be the chief editor(主编) of the magazine by his classmates. “We have been preparing for the magazine for quite a long time. During last winter vacation, everyone chose articles they wrote and provided them for our editors.” Xu Leqi, another student, wrote about a sports meeting where several boys who were not very good at sports pushed themselves hard to fight for the honor of the class. Reading the stories reminds them of the important moments they shared together.
Besides, it’s also a great chance to look back on their own growth. “I found that my articles written in the old days were quite naive(幼稚的). I used to complain a lot. But three years later, I feel I can look at things in a more positive way,” Hang said.
Apart from articles, many photos are chosen to be reminders of school years. The photos show many firsts, such as the first time the class picked tea leaves, the first time they sang on stage, the first sports prize they won, and their first successful dance performance. They are really of great meaning to them.

What does taking a risk mean? It means trying challenging things even if they make you feel uncomfortable or afraid. One of the greatest risks I’d ever taken was playing a role in my high school’s fall play. I was not only a person who had little performance experience, but also I stuttered (口吃).
The thought of performing in front of people made me worried. The reason why I decided to perform was that I wanted to take part in my school theatre program.
On the day of the audition (试演), there were also some acting exercises to warm us up. We were divided into pairs to prepare parts of the play. I felt very worried. After I said some of the lines (台词), my partner said, “I notice you are stuttering. Is that for dramatic effect or do you really stutter?” I was speechless.
When my turn to audition came, my heart was beating fast. Across from me sat the director and his assistants (助手). Needless to say, I was really worried about my performance. I played the role of a man painter who pretended (假装) to be a woman. My partner was playing a businessman who wanted to marry me (the woman). We said our lines and, surprisingly, I didn’t stutter. We went through it several times, and finally it was over. I was so relaxed.
The next Monday I was told that I had made the play. How excited I was! It was a lot of fun doing the play, and it was clear to me that my stuttering couldn’t stop me doing what I wanted to do, and taking risks was well worth the time and effort.
1. What’s the meaning of taking a risk?2. What kind of person was the writer?
3. Why was the writer’s heart beating fast when his turn to audition came?
