Earth is home to lots of wonderful wildlife, but sadly, some animals don’t live on the earth any more today. These are called extinct animals.
The sabre-toothed cat | This dangerous cat lived thousands of years ago in America. It had two very big teeth that it used to kill animals. You could see these teeth even when its mouth was closed. People think that this cat could kill very big animals. It was extinct around 10, 000 BCE because there wasn’t enough food for it. |
The woolly rhinoceros | This big animal lived in the middle of Europe and Asia until about 8, 000 BCE. It had two horns—the big one could be one metre long. It had a thick woolly coat to keep warm in the cold winters. But then the weather changed a lot and the woolly rhinoceros couldn’t live in the warm weather. Also, many people killed them for food. So they died out. |
The dodo | The dodo was a bird. It lived on the island of Mauritius. Once there were thousands of them on the island. Then people from Europe arrived and started to eat them. The Europeans took animals such as dogs and cats to the island, and the animals ate the dodo eggs. Why didn’t the dodo fly away from the people? Because it couldn’t fly. In 1681, it became extinct. |

Each weekday, Raden rides her three-wheeler with books for children in Muntang village. She will lend the books to children who give her plastic cups, bags and other waste. She told Reuters that she is helping the kids learn the value of reading as well as making them protect the environment. As soon as she shows up, little children surround (围绕) her “Trash Library”.
All of the children are all carrying rubbish bags and Raden’s three-wheeler quickly fills up with them as the books fly out. She’s happy that the kids are going to spend less time on online games as a result.
“Let us build a culture of literacy (素养) from young age to mitigate the harm of the online world,” Raden said. “We should also take care of our waste in order to fight climate (气候) change and it is our responsibility to save the earth from trash,” Raden said.
She collects about 100 kg of waste each week, which is then sorted out (挑选) and sent for recycling or sold. She has 6,000 books to lend and wants to take the mobile service to neighbouring areas as well.
Kevin Alamsyah, an avid 11-year-old reader, searches for waste lying in the village. “When there is too much trash, our environment will become dirty and it’s not healthy. That’s why I look for rubbish to borrow a book,” he says.

Perhaps in the last few weeks you’ve heard much about Open AI and its new product ChatGPT, a chatbot or a chat robot that can answer your questions wisely. It is a type of language model that uses deep learning to generate human-like, conversational texts. In other words, it can respond to its users in natural language.
ChatGPT is not only friendly to its users, but also safe to the society. It is not the first go at AI chatbot. Microsoft launched Tay in 2016, but Twitter users thought it rude, which led to its downfall in the first 24 hours. BlenderBot3 from Meta fell down for providing harmful information. ChatGPT is trying to avoid these problems. It has been trained to communicate with users in natural language, which makes you feel you are talking with a real friendly man. Besides, ChatGPT’s own special system makes sure it does not provide any unsafe outputs. That means it will say no if you ask it a question which includes potential risks. Times describes ChatGPT as “a stunningly lifelike conversational language system” and “the world’s first truly useful chatbot”.
Supposed to be an improvement, ChatGPT can help with various tasks. It corrects grammar, makes texts into simple ones, and even fixes bugs in Python code. ChatGPT also can offer emotional support and advice to users dealing with stress. The only thing you need to do is to type up your questions. ▲ . ChatGPT is still in its early stages of development. As you might expect, there are some problems that come with this type of chatbot. For example, it can be a useful tool for students to cheat on their homework or tests. Sometimes, detailed answers may also mislead people into believing that the answers are true though they are not.
Even though there are still some limitations and worries, many in the technology world see ChatGPT as a look into the future. And now ChatGPT itself is more than a machine and Open AI seeks to understand what it can and can’t do. Whatever comes of this new age technology, welcome to the world of ChatGPT.

Wen worked as a volunteer at the Wolong China Giant Panda Garden in Sichuan that summer. Every year, volunteers go to the garden to take care of its pandas. People aged 12 to 65 can apply for the volunteer program. Each volunteer works for at least one day.
Wen went to the Yucai Middle School Attached to Chengdu No. 7 High School in Sichuan. Wen cleaned the panda’s home every morning while she was volunteering. “We have to collect the pandas’ feces(粪便), as it can tell us what the pandas have been eating and whether they are healthy or not,” she said. “The panda keepers analyze the feces every day.”
Wen got to do this as well. She carefully analyzed the feces. “We check to see what is in the feces and what color it is. For example, if it is green, it means the panda has been eating bamboo leaves,” she said.
The experience also helped the volunteers better understand pandas. When Wen fed Jingke, she touched its fur. “It was not soft, but hard. It was like touching needles!” Wen said.
Volunteer Liang Tingyu, 22, who once studied at the Worcester Academy in Massachusetts, found that the pandas were not only cute but also dangerous. “Their teeth and claws are so sharp. Pandas like to be left alone. They may fight to protect their home,” Liang said.

Although they have such a name, they are more closely related to elephants. Manatees and elephants evolved from the same ancestor(祖先)over 50 million years ago.
There are three kinds of manatees. The West Indian manatee lives along the North American east coast from Florida to Brazil. The Amazonian manatee inhabits(栖居在)the Amazon River and the African Manatee swims along the west coast and rivers of Africa. Manatees differ in size from 2.4 to 4 metres and can weigh 200 and 590 kilograms. Though they may seem cumbersome, manatees can swim quickly and beautifully. Manatees usually swim about 8 km/h, but they can swim up to 24 km/h when they feel a need for speed.
Like whales and dolphins, manatees breathe air. They go to the surface for air every three to five minutes. However, they can hold their breath underwater for up to 20 minutes. This may have to do with the size of their lungs, as they are a large part of the manatee’s body.
Manatees have been under attack by humans for a long time, threatened by fishing nets and coastal development. The IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species lists all manatees as vulnerable(脆弱的)or endangered and facing a high risk of dying out.

In many ways, the cheetah is built for speed. Even though this animal is a cat, its paws are much more like a dog’s paws. The paws allow the cheetah to make quick turns. A cheetah also has long legs that help it take big steps. It can jump as far as 20 feet in one leap! Even the cheetah’s backbone helps it move quickly. The backbone acts as a spring (弹簧), moving the cheetah forward with sudden burst (迸发) of energy. Although the cheetah can run fast, it cannot run for long distance. It uses its energy quickly and becomes tired. If the cheetah cannot catch its dinner in a hurry, it will have to rest a while before trying again.
A cheetah is also made to be a great hunter. It has sharp eyesight. A cheetah can see other animals up to three miles away. Good eyesight helps the cheetah find its prey so it can plan an attack. A cheetah’s coat is also very useful. The coat is light brown with black spots. It allows a cheetah to hide in the tall, brown grass in Africa. Other animals do not see it hiding, so a cheetah can get close to rabbits, birds, and other animals quietly.
Today the cheetah is in danger. Parts of Africa are being turned into farms. This change forces the cheetah and other animals to find new places to live, which is not always easy. Cheetahs are also being hunted by other animals such as lions and hyenas. However, zookeepers and wildlife experts are trying to save the cheetah. Maybe with their help, cheetahs will grow larger in number.
