There are many small wonders that human eyes can’t see. Thanks to photomicrographers (微观摄影师), we can see the amazing small worlds.
Zhang Yefei is one of the photomicrographers. In the past two years, the 41-year old engineer from Jiangsu has shot (拍摄) the eggs of hundreds of butterflies and moths (蛾) in his free time. His photo of moth eggs won him a top 20 award (奖) at the 2022 Nikon Small World Competition in October.
Looking for moth eggs is very difficult, because they are often really small. Zhang usually takes a magnifying glass during his trip into the wild. He uses it to look for the leaves with eggs on them.
To take photos of eggs, Zhang uses a microscope and some special tools. But a photo can shoot only a small part of the egg. To fully show an egg, he first takes about 500 to 1,000 photos. Then, he uses a computer technology to turn the photos into one. It often takes him about six hours to finish one piece of photo, with the longest one taking 21 hours. “I’m not a full-time photomicrographer, so I don’t have enough time to shoot and make photos.” Zhang said.
Although it has many difficulties, taking photos also brings Zhang surprises. While he uses LED lights to light the photos, the temperature can help the incubation (孵化) of the egg. So he was able to see how a larva (幼虫) turns into a butterfly.
“I’ll try and find out more interesting things about the small world and bring them to light,” Zhang said.

On Nov. 11, there is a holiday created by Chinese people for singles(单身人士). It is known as Singles’ Day. However, now it has become the biggest online shopping day in the world. T-mall, Taobao and many other online shopping sites have huge sales on this day to attract shoppers. This year’s sales reached 253.97 billion yuan.
There are similar shopping days in the United States as well. The most famous of these is Black Friday. It always falls on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. On this day, stores will have specials, just like on Singles’ Day in China.
On Black Friday, shoppers will often wake up very early to wait in line at stores before they open. They might start to wait in line as early as 2 or 3 am. Sometimes the crowds will be so big that it is impossible to get inside the store.
Another similar holiday is Cyber(网络的) Monday. This day always falls on the Monday after Thanksgiving. It is like Singles’ Day, since it is only for online shopping.
In my opinion, I don’t like any of these holidays. They place too much importance on buying things. I prefer to celebrate Buy Nothing Day. It is a ‘holiday’ that falls on the same day as Black Friday. It is an international day of protest(抗议) to the problem of over-consumption(消费过度). What do you think about these holidays?

Bob: I’m going to be 30 next Friday. In France, when you have a birthday, you often invite people out. I know that in some countries, it’s the opposite—people take you out. |
George: My 21st birthday was in April. I was really happy to go out and celebrate with my friends. In Spain they pull on my ears 21 times, once for each year. It’s an old custom. Some people do it only once, but my friends are very traditional! Sometimes it’s wonderful to follow the custom. I even want them to do that on my sixtieth birthday. |
Yang Hua: Yesterday was my sixteenth birthday. It was a special birthday, so we had a family celebration. I was happy to receive some money in “lucky” envelopes from my relatives. My mother cooked noodles—noodles are for a long life in China. |
Anna: In Britain we say, “Life begins at 40”. My husband Mike is going to be 40 this weekend. It’s a special birthday. I’d like to hold a big party for him with all our friends and relatives, but we don’t want him to know that now. It’s going to be a surprise. What am I going to give my husband? I can’t say. That’s a surprise, too. |

With the development of China, many traditional ink paintings (水墨画) about poverty alleviation (扶贫) show the changes in southern Chinese villages.
Shang Xinzhou, a painter from the Guangxi Art University, has been creating traditional ink paintings for many years. His paintings show the life in poor areas.
“Thanks to my experience in Duomai Village, I can make the paintings much lovelier,” said the painter, who has spent two and a half years working there.
Shang’s paintings show the progress in the fight against poverty. His works show changes from difficult local conditions and people’s hard times to better conditions and happy lives.
“I like drawing people’s real lives, and paintings can be a bridge for communication between the local people and me,” said Shang.
During his stay, he put his paintings about the local life on the Internet to help villagers sell their products. To make the nightlife there richer, he sold paintings to buy streetlights, so people could enjoy square dancing in the evening.
Shang’s excellent works were popular in the village. “I love his paintings and they show great changes in our village,” said a farmer.
In recent years, more artists have traveled to mountain villages to record the development of China’s poor areas, telling stories of the country’s fight against poverty.

In the painting class last week, he drew a duck with one leg. It has a strange shape. When he showed his works to his teachers and classmates, they were surprised. They didn’t understand. It made Steve shy and nervous. After class, his teacher told him to prepare the works to display in the next class. Mr. Green cared for him and comforted him. Steve thought he was kind. He drew a flying horse with wings (翅膀).
It’s time for the painting class. Steve was very anxious. He was afraid that his classmates would laugh at (嘲笑) him.
Mr. Green said to the students with a smile on his face, “Good morning, class, we are going to paint…”
While waiting, Steve guessed what the teacher would say. Suddenly the teacher smiled and said, “You can play freely. Your painting makes people feel happy.”
“Yes! Great!” said Steve excitedly.
Steve started to paint a running horse easily on a large piece of white paper. It was not a flying horse. It was really beautiful. It looked like a real horse. The whole class cheered for him and felt proud of him.
From that day on, Steve was never nervous about art classes.

①_________
In fact, face painting may be the very first form of art. Painting faces are in different colors and patterns. This has been part of people’s traditions for thousands of years. The way that people painted their faces can tell stories and lessons from the past.
②_________
People still paint their faces for lots of reasons. Patterns on faces connect people to a tribal (部落) family and can show who is the most important person in the family. For fighters, it is a way to make their enemies afraid. Face painting is also used in many ceremonies and special celebrations.
How is face paint important in theater?
Face paint was important in Japanese and Chinese ancient ceremonies. It was also used in traditional theatre to change the actors’ roles. Actors in those countries still wear white, black and red face paint today to show feelings and make the bad people look dramatic (戏剧性的) and awful.

Tribal people make face paint from the natural colors in plants and earth. Plant parts are used to make different colorings. The ingredients are dried over a fire and then made into a powder (粉末). This is then mixed with animal fat.
