Many people don’t think that TV shows are educational. It is true that lots of shows are meaningless. However, some shows are good and we can learn many things from them. Here are a few of my favorite shows.
Blue Peter When I was a child, this was the only show I could watch. I watched it on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday every week. You can learn about different countries around the world from it. As the show is for children, the language in it is easy.
The Great British Bake Off This show is about making bread, cakes and so on. The show wants to find Britain’s best amateur baker (业余烘焙师). You can watch the show and learn how to bake different kinds of bread and cakes by following their steps.
Frozen Planet This show is about life in cold places. There are many special animals in this show. I love this show not because of the cute animals, but because it teaches us why we have these animals and what we need to do to save them.
Pointless This show is great for you to think. It is a quiz (知识竞赛) show. It may be about sports, weather, movies and so on. I learnt lots of things from this show.

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a bad snowstorm happened. Unable to see far, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water or a phone. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to worry too much. He thought about all of the survival(幸存者) shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips(提示) he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find a shelter(躲避处)from the cold wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave(洞穴). Then he put branches(树枝)on top of himself to keep himself warm.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby river so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he slept in his cave.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He then returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas had often watched Gryll’s survival show Man vs.Wild. That’s where he learned how to save his life.

Chinese TV show Where Are We Going, Dad? provides a closer look at the changing roles of dads in modern family life. The show follows the adventures(冒险经历)of five celebrity(明星)dads who take trips with their young children and try to complete a set of tasks. It shows how dads are trying hard to find the best way to raise their children and keep a closer relationship with them. Young dads no longer want to be cold.
Psychologists(心理学家)say that a strong fatherly influence is important in a child’s development. Because fathers teach their children skills and encourage them to try new things, and they also give them a sense of safety. A child learns that if something goes wrong, he or she can depend on dad to help fix it. The psychologists also say that without a dad, a child is more possible to drop out of school and get into trouble.
A mother’s love is important, and so is a father’s love. Chen Mo, a psychology professor says, “It takes both parents to raise a child. Children have different needs at different ages and this needs to be considered by both parents.”

This year marks the 61st anniversary of the invention of instant noodles. Ever since they were created by Japanese businessman Momofuku Ando in 1958, instant noodles have been popular around the world. In China, the product has almost become a necessity for those who travel by train.
There are some fun facts about instant noodles: The total length of the noodles in one package is 51 meters. The first instant noodles were considered a luxury product. When they first came to Japanese supermarkets in 1958, they were six times the cost of fresh udon noodles (乌冬面). Japanese people even voted instant noodles as one of their best inventions of the 20th century.
For instant noodles, as well as many other “instant” foods, convenience is the key selling point. They are supposed to make our lives easier.
Food trends (趋势) often reflect changes in society. For example, in wars, soldiers eat compressed biscuits and canned meat because they don’t need to cook these foods. And in the 1960s, frozen dinners of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables became popular in the US. This is because more women started working and had no time to cook.
In recent years, however, online meal-ordering services have brought challenges to instant foods. Uber Eats is a popular app of this kind in the United States. In China, we have Ele.me, Dianping and Meituan. These services offer not only convenience, but also more choices and tastier food. According to the World Instant Noodle Association, instant noodle sales dropped by 17 percent in China as of 2016.
This might show that Chinese people are now more interested in having higher-quality diets and not just simply filling their bellies, experts say.
