The elderly people in care homes in London are given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely. The project was started by a local charity. It also helps them to be healthier. Workers in care homes have reported old people use less medicine after hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said, “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. I like the project a lot. I am waiting there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and waiting there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed. It’s good to have a different interest. People have been bringing their children to see the hens and they come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and I feel great to have a sense of achievement*.”
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given money to start it all over the country. Wendy Wilson, a care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said, “Elderly people really welcome the idea of the project and the creative way. We are looking forward to the good result and the fun the project can bring to people here.” Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said, “we are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect old people through a shared interest and creative activities.”

One teacher explained that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home, so school lunch or an after-school meal might be the most food they would get all day.
Kapasi, who attends private school, was shocked. What’s more, she decided to help. “I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don’t have to wait to be an adult to fix it,” says Kapasi. She and a group of friends are now putting their programming skills to work to create an app called Food for Thought, which will allow parents, students, and even kind-hearted strangers to donate(捐款) to a lunch account(账户) for a student in need at a nearby school.
About 20 million American kids receive free lunches. Also, they can buy foods with more quality at lower prices; that is to say, those students’ families just pay for part of their food. When they don’t have the money on any given day, the students might accept a free meal, such as a cheese sandwich.
One smart feature of the app is that it is donated by people from different areas. Some are teachers and doctors, and some are bosses in big companies. To receive help, a family will need only a recommendation(推荐) from a school headmaster, and no one else has to know who you are.
“I want to make my platform an application that all users feel no shame in using,” says Kapasi. She hopes to test the app in a school district(地区) this fall.

Chatbots can look up information, answer frequently(经常地) asked questions and collect information from users. They can also be used for online shopping to help people decide what to buy.
There are two kinds of chatbots: open and closed. A closed chatbot may or may not use AI (人工智能) to understand messages from users. An open chatbot uses AI both to know what people want and to create a reply. Open chatbots are able to learn from their conversations and then improve their ability to communicate over time. This means that open chatbots can answer a wider kinds of questions, compared with closed chatbots.
Chatbots are available all the time, even at midnight. What’s more, one chatbot can serve many users at once. This means that people can get answers quickly instead of waiting for the reply of human service.

Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu, the members of the Shenzhou XIII, which was launched(发射)on October 16, appear on television screens watched by millions of students across China.
During the 41-minute lesson, the astronauts did four experiments to show physical phenomena(现象)only possible in a weightless environment, such as “liquid crystallization” and “a water bridge”. In one experiment, Wang used a toy of Bing Dwen Dwen, the mascot(吉祥物)of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, to show how things fly in Tiangong. They invited the young viewers to do similar experiments to see the differences between space and land environments.
Before closing the lesson, the astronauts answered questions from students. The questions covered the life and work in space, such as how to take care of the skin and whether hot water was available(可用的).
Wednesday’s event marked the third time Wang had taken part in a space lesson. In June 2013, she gave the nation’s first space lesson to over 60 million Chinese students in Shenzhou X. It made China the second country, following the United States, to have given a lesson to schoolchildren from space.
In early December, Wang gave the country’s second space lesson from the Tiangong station. The astronauts showed viewers how they lived and worked inside the space station.
“These science lessons can encourage students to explore the world of science and technology.” Shi Yi, a physics teacher, said after today’s activity, “Encouraged by China’s spaceflight achievements, my school has built a space science laboratory and the teachers give lessons about space exploration.”
