Have you ever seen a train that is hung in the air? Such a train has appeared in Chengdu already.
The train is powered by lithium batteries (锂电池) instead of electricity. It is not only energy-saving but also environmentally friendly compared to other trains. Each coach will be able to carry up to 120 passengers.
The train has done its test without any problem a short time ago. But further tests will be done to check the train’s ability to turn and climb up the tracks before it can be open to the public.
Chengdu is the first city in our country to build such a train system, and Shanghai will also open one this year. Shanghai started plans for its “Skytrain” in 2015.
The “Skytrain” in Shanghai will run above the ground at a height of around six meters. The columns which will support the railway will be just 80 cm wide. The columns are so narrow that they could even be built in the green belt in the middle of the road. The train Shanghai plans to use will have just four coaches (车厢), and each coach will hold 70 passengers. The train will run at around 30 kilometers per hour. It will be a little slower than the city’s subway trains, which run between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour.
“Skytrain” would cost about 120 to 150 million yuan to build. Developers said the train system will carry around 15,000 passengers every hour. The space-saving train system would run silently through the city.

I live in a small village in South Africa. I can see my school from my bedroom window. But there is a big problem—there is a river between my home and my school. There is a small boat, but poor children do not have money to use it. Every morning, my friends and I take off our school uniforms near the river. We put our clothes and school- books in a bucket(木桶). Then we swim to school. On rainy days, the water runs quickly. This is very dangerous. Another problem is the crocodiles(鳄鱼). They live in the river and want to eat us. It’s very scary! After swimming, we are tired(疲惫的) at school. Then we must swim again to get home. | ![]() |

Students often want to practice their English outside class. One of the best ways to practice your English is to speak to a foreigner. This week’s question comes from a student who is eager (渴望) to start a conversation with the foreigners he sees every day. This student asks, “Is it okay to talk to foreigners I see in the street?”
The answer is yes and no, but probably no! If you see a foreigner who looks lost, it is polite to ask them, “May I help you?” But, otherwise (否则), you should probably let them get on with their business. Situations, however, do exist (存在) where it is quite all right to talk to foreigners. For example, if a foreigner enters your school, classroom, office, shop or restaurant, you can ask them:
-What is your name?
-Where do you come from?
-What do you think of Wudi?
-How long will you stay in Wudi?
There are also situations where it’s OK to talk to foreigners in public places. If you see a foreigner alone in a restaurant, bar or coffee shop, it may be appropriate (合适的) to ask him or her:
-Is this seat free?
-Do you mind if I talk to you in English?
You can probably help them if they are new to China and if they are alone, you may be able to make them feel more welcome.
After a few such questions, you should know whether this person wants to talk to you or not. If they ask you similar questions, or if they give long, informative answers, you’re in luck. If not, then give them their privacy (独处). Talking to strangers is fun if you choose the right time and place.
