On December 26th, 2020, China passed a new law to protect the Yangtze River, the “mother river” of China. It is Yangtze River Protection Law. It took effect (生效) on March 1st, 2021. It’s the first law to protect a waterway in China.

The 6,397-kilometer Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia. It provides one third of the freshwater resources (淡水资源) for Chinese people, but it has met lots of environmental problems in recent years, such as heavy pollution and overfishing. Especially, the river’s Chinese paddlefish (白鲟) has died out. So the “mother river” is in great need of protection. To solve these problems, China put a 10-year fishing ban (禁令) to protect fish resources.

According to a report of the government, the fishermen said they would give up fishing along the Yangtze River to protect the “mother river”. Chinese officer Han Zheng said that more support should be given to the fishermen to help them find new jobs and places to live.

Yangtze River Protection Law includes resource protection and green development. The government says the purpose of the new law is to strengthen (加强) environmental protection, use resources well and make the development sustainable (可持续的).

Save the World's Trees
“When it comes to the Earth, there is no time to waste,” says the Earth Day Network. And that is right.Protecting our environment is very important, and World Earth Day was created in 1970 to ask more people to protect our environment. On April 22,people around the world celebrate Earth Day.
Every year there is a special topic, and this year it is “Trees for the Earth”,so Earth Day this year will be all about planting trees. They are planning to plant 7.8 billion trees within the next five years.
That's a big goal, and you might wonder why trees are so important.Because they can take in carbon dioxide(CO2) and protect the air quality(质量).CO2 is a chemical in our atmosphere, but humans make too much of it.Each person makes about 2.3 tons a year, which is bad for the environment.
Well guess what! Planting new trees is important because people cut down a huge number of trees.Last year, there were 3 trillion trees in the world, about 139 billion in China. But according to China Daily, the world's total number has been almost cut in half since human civilization(文明) began. That's because 15 billion trees are cut down every year.
So we need to plant more to make up for(弥补) the ones we lost. One tree can take in 21.8 kilograms of CO2 per year. And it's still one of the cheapest and best ways to get rid of CO2.
But don't forget that we can also help the environment by cutting down on how much energy(能源) or water we use every day.Every little thing helps.

【推荐2】Like many countries, Britain has serious environmental problems. In 1952, more than 4,000 people died in London because of the smog (烟雾). The government made new laws to stop smog from coal fires and factories and things get better.

Today, London is much cleaner but there is a new problem: smog from cars. In December 1991, there was very little wind in London and pollution was much worse. As a result, about 160 people died from pollution in just four days.

Part of the problem is the new “out of town” shopping centers. In the past, people often walked to shops near their home or went by bus. Now, many people drive to the new shopping centers. As a result, the small shops have been closed and more people have to travel to do their shopping.

Many people think that Britain needs better and cheaper public transport (交通). Transport in Britain is very expensive. An early morning train trip from Glasgow to London (about 600km) can cost about £100, for example. A short 15-minute bus trip can cost over £1.00.

Many people are trying to reduce(减少)the use of cars in Britain. Some cities now have special bicycle paths (小道) and many people go to work by bike. Some people also travel to work together in one car to make less the pollution and the cost.

文章大意:本文主要讲世界比较缺水,虽然地球上有许多水,但不能为人类所利用。科学家也正在寻找便宜的方式来把盐水变成可饮用水。

【推荐3】The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water which we can’t drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only use the 3 % of the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can’t even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted.

Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid a serious water shortage later on? Firstly, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making study in this field. Today, in most large cities, water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again. Even if every large city reused its water, still there would not be enough. What could people turn to next?

The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt (盐) out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it’s already in use in many parts of the world. Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way to do it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we won’t be in danger of drying up.
