It was October 2004. Red foxes killed 180 penguins (企鹅) on Middle Island, Australia. Foxes are not native to Australia. But humans had brought foxes there to use for sport hunting (狩猎). Then, the foxes started killing penguins and other native wildlife for food.

The type of penguin that lives on Middle Island is called the little penguin. It is the smallest kind of penguin in the world. Once, about 800 little penguins lived on the island. By 2005, that number was below 10. What could people do?

A local chicken farmer named Allan Marsh had an idea. Marsh wanted to train sheepdogs to protect penguins. He said the sheepdogs would scare the foxes away. Marsh used sheepdogs to guard his chickens from foxes. He thought it would work for penguins, too.

Finally, in 2006, the first sheepdog began to work. Since then, the number of penguins on Middle Island has grown to 220.

Australian zoos are now trying to use sheepdogs to save the eastern barred bandicoot (东袋狸). People haven’t seen this small animal outside a zoo since 2002. The zoos plan to return bandicoots to the wild, with sheepdogs for protection.

【推荐1】As we know, vegetables are rich in vitamins(维他命). One of the best vegetables is the carrots. Rabbits love to eat carrots very much. What does a carrot look like? Many people would say it’s orange, long and feels hard. In fact, carrots are in many different colors and shapes. For example, you can see red or purple carrots in the supermarket.

My uncle Sam is a farmer and he is good at growing vegetables like carrots. He taught me a lot about carrot planting. He told me there are three main reasons in deciding the taste of carrots. The first one is the weather. A warm and cool day could be a good time to plant the carrots. It’s neither too hot nor too cold. The second one is about the soil condition. The carrots don’t need much water to grow so we must keep the earth a little dry. It’s unnecessary to water them twice a day. The last one is to fertilize(施肥) the carrots often. The more fertilizer a farmer gives, the more carrots he will get. People eat carrots as food. What about carrots? They “eat” fertilizer as their “food”.

Do you know how to cook carrots? My aunt tells me that she usually cuts up the carrots, then cooks them with potatoes. But I like to eat the carrots that are pulled out of the earth. This is the ecological vegetable. It’s healthy food!

【推荐2】Fraser Island is in Queensland, Australia, about 200 kilometers north of Brisbane. It is about 120 kilometres long and 240 kilometers wide. It is a very important is land because it is completely made of sand, but there is a long beach along the east coast. Planes arrive and leave from here.

The sand makes unusual shapes. There are hills made of sand called sandblows. Nothing grows on them. They move one or two meters a year from the northwest towards the southeast of the island, getting bigger and bigger. At other places on the island, such as Rainbow Gorge, The Cathedral and Red Canyon, the sandy rocks have different colors. Sometimes the rocks are so brown that they turn the sea brown, like coffee.

Surprisingly, the sandy island has a lot of different plants and animals. There are dark forests- eucalyptus woods, beautiful flowers and over a hundred lakes. There are many kinds of birds, like owls and curlews. There are many animals there, too, such as crocodiles, flying foxes and wild dogs called dingoes.

About 500,00 people visit the island every year to see the island's beauty and nature. People enjoy camping and hiking there. Unluckily, the visitors create problems. They damage (毁坏) plants and frighten (惊吓) animals. Their sun cream (防晒霜) makes the water dirty. So it is necessary to manage the visitors. For example, people may not use motor boats or go fishing in the lakes, and they need official papers to drive there.
