There is a system that can produce a certain amount of electricity very cheaply using the energy from footsteps. That is to say, every time people step on this special floor, electricity is produced.
The inventor of the floor came up with the idea when he was a student and worked in an energy business. The business asked him to find ways to power up street lights in the city center using the energy from the sun, but it soon became clear that this might not work because many city centers didn’t get enough sunlight because of tall buildings. Then he thought of a better plan.
Why not use the energy produced by people who walk past the street instead? The right technology could be used to convert this energy into electricity right under people’s feet.
The floor could actually be very efficient (效率高的). This is especially true when it is used in very busy areas. And the reason is that a lot of energy is produced simply because of large numbers of people walking across the floor. The floor can have other uses too, such as recording how many people visit a particular (特定的) place at particular times. This kind of information is very useful for certain people. For example, shop owners near the place would be interested in knowing what time of the day they have the highest customer numbers. The technology was created out of a hope of making energy that is untouchable closer to people. The business also said it tried to find a way for people to further their understanding of problems of climate change and sustainability (可持续性).

But French designers Mathieu Lehanneur and Anthony van den Bossche didn’t think that was enough. They wanted to add something new in people’s living rooms. So they created a do-it yourself ecosystem (生态系统) named “Local River”. The system lets its owner grow fish and plants inside tanks (缸) in their living rooms. In the DIY fish and gardening ecosystem, the plants on top of the tank feed on the waste of the fish below. It makes the water clean so the fish can go on living. In this way, the fish and plants in the Local River can keep the balanced environment, and only need a little help from the owner. The system is also called “fridge-aquarium(冰箱水族馆)” by some people because owners can use the fish and plants as food. That is to say, owners are able to grow fish and plants within the “Local River” before eating them. Almost any plant can grow on top of the tanks and most freshwater fish are able to live in the tanks below. The “Local River” ecosystem from Paris comes in small and large models. It is a relaxing thing to have in your home.
1. From the passage we know the system lets its owner grow ________.A.fish and plants | B.fish and crops |

A.All fish are able to live in the tanks below. |
B.The designer Mathieu Lehanneur comes from France. |
C.The “Local River” can keep the balanced environment by itself. |
D.In the DIY fish and gardening ecosystem, the plants grow under the tank. |
Do you want to go out for a picnic on a sunny day? How can you take a “green” trip to protect the environment? Walk, bike, take the subway... or maybe drive a solar-powered(以太阳能为动力的)car!
A team of 22 Dutch university students has created a solar-powered car called Stella Vita. Last October, they completed the car’s first road trip. The 2, 800-kilometer trip was powered only by the sun.
Stella Vita is a two-passenger car with a kitchen, a sitting area, a bed, a shower and a toilet. There are solar panels(板)on the top of the car. And the solar panels can spread out when the car is parked.
On sunny days, Stella Vita can travel up to 720 kilometers with a top speed of 120 kilometers an hour. The energy it gets from the sun can also be used for other things. People can cook, take a shower and watch TV in the car. On cloudy days, the car still gets 60% to 70% of the energy it does on sunny days. How can the car keep going at night? Well, it has a large battery (电池)that can store energy. This allows the car to travel up to 600 kilometers at night.
Stella Vita isn’t the Dutch team’s first solar car since it was set up ten years ago. The team has created different types of solar cars. The team members are working to introduce this green way of traveling. Let’s hope that in the future, we can all travel “by” the sun!

Can you come to my 14th birthday party on Saturday, November 13th? We're having dinner at a restaurant and then having a party at my house. I would like both of you to come if you can. If you need a place to stay for the night, you can sleep on the floor in our sitting room, but bring a sleeping bag, please! Ha! Ha! It's only a joke. If you want to stay at my home for a night, please tell me.
The dinner is at Mama Mia. We can eat Italian food there. It will start at 7:30 p.m. You can take the train at 5:00 p.m. and arrive in my city at 6:45 p.m. Then go to the restaurant by taxi. After dinner, we will have the birthday party at about 9:00 p.m. My mother will make a birthday cake and some snacks for us. I'm sure they will be very delicious. I hear that you have some nice CDs. Could you please bring them to my party? Then we can enjoy some good music. I think we will have a good time.
