The Philadelphia Orchestra (费城交响乐团) arrived in Beijing Tuesday for a tour that celebrates the 50th anniversary of the group’s first visit to China.
The visit comes as the United States and China prepare for a meeting next week between their top leaders.
The orchestra’s 1973 trip has been called “historic” as an early example of the start of diplomatic (外交的) relations between China and the U.S. The orchestra’s visit followed President Richard Nixon’s visit in 1972. He was the first American president to visit China while in office.
Orchestra officials say 14 members-are on the trip, including 73-year-old violin player Davyd Booth. Booth was among the visitors in 1973, as well.
“This constant (持续不断的) 50-year connection with China has been really very deep and very wonderful,” Booth said after the group arrived at the Beijing airport.
The orchestra is making its 13th visit to China. It last visited in 2019.
The American musicians will perform with the China National Symphony Orchestra starting Friday. They will also visit the cities of Tianjin, Suzhou and Shanghai and hold special classes at schools.
Another cultural exchange is going on, too. The American Ballet Theatre is now in China.
The U.S. and China have slowly been returning to normal communications after years of rising tensions and disputes (紧张和争端).
The two countries are preparing for a meeting between President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (亚太经合组织) event in San Francisco next week.

In the south, black people worked on farms and on building up the Mississippi River. During the week the people worked long and hard. They often lived alone, without their families, far from home.

Yet there is still a gender gap (性别差异) when it comes to women in technology. These women face many challenges (挑战) and 41% of them give up trying. So what can be done to close this gender gap?
First, women need to be encouraged to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as computer science. It’s said that 74% of young women express interest in STEM subjects and computer science. However, women hold only 18% of undergraduate (本科) computer science degrees and 26% of technology jobs. Early education must convey (传递) technology as a tool that can be used to solve problems in real life.
Many young women are put off because they regard the technology as men’s job. Women are short of role models. Only 5% of tech leaders are women. They can play a huge role for young women by giving them encouragement, support and guidance. They can also help attract more women to get into the field. However, men working in the tech industry have a duty to listen to women and keep a comfortable work culture as well.
