The first “forest library” in Shanghai opened to the public in February, 2023. It gives readers a good time to relax and read in a natural environment.
Known as Read &. Joy Forest, the “forest library” lies in a green area near Shanghai Library East. Covering an area of 20, 546 square meters, it allows visitors to take a walk in the quiet and green forest.
In order not to make much trouble to the forest, the library is in the open air and has simple things like chairs and an information desk.
“I learnt about the ‘forest library’ from my friends, so I came here,” said Wang Tao, a 21-year-old college student. “The green outdoor environment is good for my eyes. I’ll come back for sure.”
Having a library in the woods is an extension (延伸) of reading indoors, according to Xu Qiang, head of Shanghai Library. Xu added, “It offers different reading experiences to readers. They enjoy these experiences a lot.”
Most of the visitors to the “forest library” are young people and parents with their children, who either lose themselves in reading or take a walk in the forest. “I am really fond of the fresh air and the trees here. I’ve spent the whole morning indoors, and want to get some fresh air. The library makes it possible to enjoy reading in a natural environment. I feel very relaxed here.” said one reader Zhang Ming sitting on a chair.

As a book lover, my favourite book is Robinson Crusoe. This book is written by Daniel Defoe, and it has already influenced many students like me. Every time I read it, I see a tall and strong Robinson. He is a brave man. I like him so much.
When Robinson was young, he dreamed of sailing on the sea day and night. Unluckily, after he grew up, he actually lived on an island for 28 years, where no people lived. During those years, he had to experience hunger and fight against natural disasters. Finally, the great man succeeded in dealing with a lot of difficulties and went out of the island because of his fighting spirit and hard work.
The book encourages me deeply. Our life cannot be lucky all the time. But no pain, no gain, and only hard work can lead us to a better life.

But researchers are now finding a different result. A recent study that reviewed around 50 years of data, including the results of nearly 300 experiments testing the facial feedback theory, has found that if smiling improves happiness, it’s only by a tiny bit. The researchers say their results suggest that if 100 people smiled, only about seven might expect to feel happier than if they hadn’t smiled.
Part of the reason for the different findings may be that there are lots of different kinds of smiles, says Paula Niedenthal, an expert at the University of Wisconsin-Madison . “Not all smiles are true smiles of joy.”
Moreover, recent research has found that, over time, forcing your expression into the shape of a smile can have a bad influence on health.
For example, service workers who felt forced to smile for customers all day triggered a higher risk of heavy drinking after work. That may be because unhappy employees forced to provide service with a smile are unlikely to be wearing true grins(露齿的笑), the researchers say.
“Maybe we should not force people to smile when they are not feeling good,” Niedenthal says. “Because, I know when I’m sad and people tell me to smile, it just makes me angrier.”And as far as the research indicates, “smiling is not going to make any important difference in your life.”
