Scientists in Norway (挪威) have created an underwater robot that can tell different kinds of pollution at the bottom of the sea. The robot will help clean-up teams find the rubbish and give them a chance to remove the things that can cause the most harm to the environment.
The robot, which weighs nearly 100 pounds and uses special cameras to take 3D pictures, was created by a team at Skarv Technologies.
The researchers put their work to the test at a lake in the city of Bergen, on Norway’s southwest coast. First, the robot swam up and down in rows at about six feet above the lake bed, collecting information with the special camera. Then a computer turned the information into a map, which showed different kinds of rubbish in different colors.
A total of 3,894 objects were found in the lake and divided into different kinds. “There’s too much rubbish,” a member of the Skarv Technologies team told New Scientist. “There’s somewhere around 165 to 300 tons of rubbish in the lake.”
It is not always possible for clean-up teams to remove all the rubbish they find underwater, because there is something more important to clean. The robot will be used to help the teams find the most harmful things, and spend their time, efforts and money in removing them first. “Glass isn’ really polluting,” said Fossum. “So if you know there’s an area with a lot of glass, you probably can ignore that. Instead, you should pay attention to the things that are putting heavy metals into the environment.”
Besides helping to check the pollution, the robot can also tell the positions of animals in the sea. It can avoid hurting the animals while the clean-up teams remove the rubbish.

It is said that the emperor liked his drinking water boiled before he drank it, so that was what his servant did. One day, he and his army stopped to rest. A servant began boiling water for him to drink, and a dead leaf from the wild tea bush fell into the water. It turned brown, but it was unnoticed and presented to the emperor anyway. If you live in Shanghai, you might have taken a "lesson" on garbage sorting(垃圾分类), Shanghai is the first city to carry out(实施)strict rules on garbage sorting. People in Shanghai know that garbage is sorted into four categories(类别)—recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. If people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan, while companies will have to pay between 1,000 to 50,000 yuan for breaking the rules. Since the rules took effect, the amount of total daily waste in Shanghai has been reduced. The city also rebuilt 21,000 waste-sorting stations and more than 40,000 waste bins have been updated.
However, there have also been some problems. Some people complained that it is difficult to deal with wet garbage, as they are asked to remove wet garbage from its bag when dumping. According to the sorting rules, the wet garbage must go in the wet waste bin and the bag must go in the dry waste bin. Jim Denevan got the idea for this kind of food service ten years ago. Jim Denevan’s brother is a farmer and he himself is a former chef. He thought the idea of a meal served right at the farm made sense, though not everyone agreed. “But I wanted to make the idea work, so I decided to cross the country—I went all the way across the United States and set the table in farms and ranches and on beaches, and all the places where food comes from.”
He recently prepared tables for more than a hundred people at Briars Farmstead in Virginia. He and his eight-member crew arrived the night before. Chefs from a local restaurant prepared the dinner.
Matt Szechenyi and his family operate Briars Farmstead. He said “This type of event connects us with a lot of enthusiastic people, people that will—we can form relationships with in the future. And this type of small farm business thrives on relationships.”
Guests bring their own plates to the meal. When they arrive, the farmer shows them around. “These are free-range chickens. We want them to eat as much pasture as possible because that’s the magic.” The tour of the farm ends at the dinner table. The meats in this five-course meal come from Matt Szechenyi’s farm. The vegetables and other ingredients come from nearby farms. Guests and local farmers sit together. Alex Bogel came with his family. He said “It is also especially wonderful to sit at a table this big with all these people. The sense of community is wonderful.”

When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost (几乎) anything. At theatres, cinemas and concerts you can put on anything you like: from beautiful suits (套装) and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, but you should look clean and tidy (整洁的). But in the UK, as well as in the US, men in offices usually wear suits and ties and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors and business people always wear quite formal clothes. And in some hotels (宾馆) and restaurants men have to wear ties and women have to wear tidy dresses.
In many ways, Americans are less formal than British people, but they are more careful with their clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sports clothes. But when they go out in the evening, they like to look nice. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets and ties, and women have to wear pretty clothes.
It is difficult to say exactly (确切地) what people wear in the UK and the US, because everyone is different. If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and then do the same. You'll feel good if you don't look too different from everyone else.
