Hello, my friends! Nice to meet you! My name is Bing Dwen Dwen (冰墩墩). I’m the mascot (吉祥物) of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. “Bing” is the Chinese word for “ice” and “Dwen Dwen” means health and liveliness (活泼). I’m a black and white panda. I have big eyes, a small nose and a small mouth. My arms and legs are short. What is it on my left hand? Haha! It is a heart pattern (心形图案) to welcome friends all over the world to come to China.

Who is that? It is my good friend, Shuey Rhon Rhon (雪容融). It is the mascot of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games (冬季残奥会). It looks like a red lantern (灯笼). It stands for harvest, warmth (温暖) and light. It has two small eyes. Its arms and legs are short, too. We are very cute.

【推荐1】Doctors have discovered a new way to help sick people who need surgery(手术). Instead of making a big cut into a patient's body to find out what is wrong inside, they can now insert a laparoscope — a long, narrow tube with a video camera at one end — through a much smaller hole. The view the camera has of the body's interior is shown on the monitor of a machine outside, thus allowing the doctors to see how it is inside.

If there is a diseased or damaged part, the doctor can perform the surgery using another cable which sends out a laser beam at one end. The beam acts like a sharp knife and allows the doctor to repair or cut away the damaged part. While the doctor performs the surgery, an assistant moves the laparoscope to give him close-up views.

One of the names for this kind of operation is “keyhole surgery”, as the cut may be as small as a keyhole! There are a number of advantages in using this method. Among them are: one, as the cut is much smaller, the patient suffers less pain and so needs less medicine for pain. Two, since the wound is smaller, it can heal faster. Three, as the patient recovers more quickly, hospital stay is shorter and so a lot less money is spent!

But there are a few problems with the method. One involves the use of the laser. As it is not always easy to control the beam, the doctor may accidentally cut some veins(静脉) and cause excessive bleeding. Such accidents do not happen often, however. They will be even less likely as technology and skills improve.

Behind the success of the mission (任务) were a team of great scientists. One of them was a 24-year-old young girl named Zhou Chengyu. Now, Zhou has become the youngest woman commander (指挥员) at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan.

Zhou’s workmates often call her “Big Sister”. She has now taken part in five space missions, All of them require the highest level of space knowledge and personal ability. In the Change-5 mission, Zhou successfully completed her commanding task. This was one of the most important roles in the mission. People have spoken highly of Zhou’s achievements, considering her as a role model for teenagers to look up to.

However, the young commander has shown no interest in being famous. In fact, Zhou has turned down many interviews. She feels that they will only get in the way of her work. Zhou’s story passes an encouraging message: Young people can get great success in science or space.

On March 27, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that children in France will start school at 3 instead of the current starting age of 6.

This change means that France will have one of the lowest compulsory school starting ages in Europe, along with Hungary.

Macron said this move aims to fight inequality(不公平) in education. Parents in poorer areas of France are less likely to send children to kindergarten. With the change, they will not have to worry about the money for schooling, because all French kids will go to kindergarten for free.

The change will also help stop terrorism in the future. The earlier children start school, the higher their chances of success and fitting into society. Macron pointed out that by building schools full of kindness and happiness, France will teach young kids not to be involved in acts of terror.

However, not everyone welcomes the move. There are a lot of debates across the country about when children should begin their education.

For example, there is a study that found children who start school later are more likely to focus on learning. On the other hand, some parents think starting school even earlier, for example, at 2 years old would be better.
