In 2016, the 75-year-old returned to make Boro the Caterpillar (《毛毛虫菠萝》), a computer-generated (CG) short movie, into a feature film.
“Miyazaki … will keep making films until he dies”, Toshio Suzuki, an experienced producer at Studio Ghibli, told Variety magazine. For Boro, Miyazaki, who has always used hand-drawn 2D animation, will work with computer technology.
The animation may be different, but Miyazaki’s movies always have something in common.
Many themes are seen again and again in his films.
Two of these themes are the sky and water. From his early film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (《风之谷》, 1984) to his popular 2004 movie Howl’s Moving Castle (《哈尔的移动城堡》), Miyazaki’s films are full of flight. The water is another place where gravity doesn’t work. Miyazaki loves quickly filling spaces with clear water, leaving things to float.
Another repeated idea in Miyazaki’s work is the Earth’s fragility (脆弱性). He often criticizes (批评) development and pollution. Princess Mononoke (《幽灵公主》) shows villagers cutting down a forest to provide fuel for their iron factory, while natural forces fight against them.
In his movies, there is often no clear good or evil. Miyazaki has explained that he sees the 21st century as a complex time. Simple stereotypes cannot be accepted, he said, even in children’s films.

It’s the first time I write to you, my children. I once sent you many messages, but you never cared about them. So I decided to write you a letter.
First, let me tell you more about our family. Besides you, my dear humans, I also have many other children. Some of them fly in the sky, some of them swim in water and some of them run in forests. Some of them are small and some of them are large.
They might be very close to you, or even live in your house. But there are also others that maybe you will never meet.
You bring them home to be your pets, friends, and helpers. You put them in zoos. You kill them for their meat or parts of their bodies. And you even hunt (猎杀) them for fun. They bring you money and happiness. But they also bring you disease and death (死亡).
I hope you can remember that wild animals are not your food or clothes. They are not killers, either. They are, in fact, your brothers and sisters.
Humans, you are smart and hardworking. You can decide where you go, as well as I go.
But you don’t listen to me. Instead, you are polluting me—my air, my forests, my rivers. You ask for so much of me, more than what I can give you. I’m worried that one day you will have no place to live in.
So, humans, I hope you and all my other children can live happily in my arms.
Yours,
Mother Earth

Should Schools Have Mental (心理的) Health Days? Some schools in the US decided to offer students some days off for Mental Health Days because many children are facing mental health problems. Here are some students’ opinions on School Mental Health Days: |
Bibi van Tooren, 11 Schools should give kids days off for mental health because mental health is just as important as physical health. Besides, if kids have long school days, they could feel stressed. What’s more, they don’t have much experience in dealing with mental health problems. |
Johnny Gabel, 9 I don’t think schools should give students days off for their mental health. Having too many days off can influence our grades. And many parents have to go to work. If students get too many days. off, they might get left home too much. This could make some kids’ mental health problems worse. |
Hailey Young, 12 The weekend was created to give us time off, but people don’t make full use of those 48 hours. Sometimes, we can’t finish our schoolwork on weekdays. Besides, schools would need students to make up mental health days. They would probably do so during real breaks and this will also cause mental health problems. |

I arrived in Penang in Malaysia this morning with my family. It was sunny and hot, so we decided to go to the beach near our hotel. My sister and I tried paragliding. I felt like I was a bird. It was so exciting! For lunch, we had something very special Malaysian yellow noodles. They were delicious! In the afternoon, we rode bicycles to Georgetown. There are a lot of new buildings now, but many of the old buildings are still there. In Weld Quay, a really old place in Georgetown, we saw the houses of the Chinese traders from 100 years ago. I wonder what life was like here in the past. I really enjoyed walking around the town.
Tuesday, July 16th
What a difference a day makes! My father and I decided to go to Penang Hill today. We wanted to walk up to the top, but then it started raining a little, so we decided to take the train. We waited over an hour for the train because there were too many people. When we got to the top, it was raining really hard. We didn’t have an umbrella, so we were wet and cold. It was terrible! And because of the bad weather, we couldn’t see anything below. My father didn’t bring enough money, so we only had one bowl of rice and some fish. The food tasted great because I was so hungry!
