We all know that a small kindness can make our life journeys brighter and more enjoyable. Kindness doesn’t cost money or take up time but it can make a big difference to how you feel. A random (随意的) act of kindness is doing something for someone else without expecting to be rewarded (奖励) for it. It’s an unplanned active action, and you can do it for others.
In our daily life, there are many ways of being kind. You can show kindness anywhere—at home, at school or in your community. For example, if you notice a person drop his gloves on the ground, you can pick them up and give them back to him. You can look for chances too, such as holding a door open, praising someone or tidying up your classroom.
And then you may surely wonder how kindness is good for people. Actually, everyone benefits (得益) from kindness. It includes the person who receives it, the person who carries out the kind act, and even anyone watching it happen. Kindness can spread among people. When seeing an act of kindness, you’re more likely to do something kind for another person by yourself. Studies show that being kind to others can make you feel more optimistic. You will see the future is hopeful and your life is quite happy. It is also a great way to feel closer to each other and you can get a lot of energy from it.
Just try to think more about the people around you. Remember that true kindness isn’t expecting to be thanked or to get anything in return.

When she stood in front of the classroom, her heart jumped very quickly. She kept anxious until her first class was over. The following days, she came to be good with all the students. After that, Kayleen learned a lot from the local (当地的) teacher and worked hard. As a result, her class reached the top in the final test. In 2014, he began doing volunteer work to clear rubbish from the beaches and officially registered (注册) as a volunteer in May, 2017. Li Jin immediately took the lead in a cleanup activity on the Sanya River.
In April, 2021, he used his own money to set up a volunteer service center which has 1,170 registered members who take part in activities without asking for payment (付款). So far, he has spent about 3, 800 hours on volunteer activities in over 550 events. More than 2,300 people have joined in with his encouragement. They’ve drawn the attention of both the adults and the children to the importance of protecting the oceans and beaches. Since it was set up, his center has organized 51 beach-cleaning activities that have seen about 1, 800 people join in. In 2021, because of Li’s growing influence in environmental protection circles, the city government invited him to make a number of short videos, in which he uses simple words to explain how to protect the environment. Several of the videos have been watched millions of times.
“My volunteer work would be meaningless if I got paid. But the work itself is of great value. So I will continue doing the environmental protection work,” he said.

Start by looking around your study place or work space, make sure that you’re completely comfortable. After all, if your chair is uncomfortable or your desk isn’t at the right height, your attention will be on how you feel and not on your work. If you study in a space where noise can affect you, try listening to instrumental music or white noise on your phone. White noise is a very quiet sound that is relaxing and pleasant to the ears of anyone.
Next, look at how you study or work. Do you often take mini-breaks to check phone calls? If this sounds like you, keep in mind that it will take several minutes to regain your focus every time you stop working on a task. Instead, set certain times to check your phone calls. If possible, turn off your phone to avoid temptaion(诱惑).
Also, remember that though it’s important to stay focused during the day, no one can do that all the time. In fact, you can improve your concentration by taking regular breaks, every 60 to 90 minutes. When you are taking a rest, you can stand up and stretch or walk down the hall to get some water. Stopping what you’re doing to move around will actually help you work better in the course of a day. Finally, if your classmate or anyone else disturbs you, and there’s a task that you really need to focus on, think about working somewhere else. Moving into an empty room or a library may be a good choice.

This wasn’t what scientists had expected to see.
They had hoped to show that giving people the right type of food for good health and growth would make their skin wounds grow back together faster --- even in people who were prevented from having enough sleep. The scientists thought it should work because good healthy food keeps the body strong, helps repair injuries and guards against infection (感染).
Tracey Smith is a scientist at the U.S. Army Research Institute. She and her team studied three groups of healthy people who came to their lab to take part in tests. They gave each group small skin wounds.
* One group of 16 volunteers got a normal amount of sleep --- seven to nine hours a night. The other two groups of 20 people each got only two hours of sleep a night, for three nights in a row. To stay awake, the volunteers were asked to do things such as walking, playing video games, watching TV, sitting on an exercise ball or playing table tennis. Throughout the experiment, one of the sleep-losing groups got a healthy drink with protein and vitamins. The other group also got a drink: It looked and tasted the same but had no healthy chemicals in it.
Sleep clearly helped. People who slept normally got well in about 4.2 days. The volunteers without enough sleep took about 5 days. And getting better healthy food offered no clear benefit. What to make of the data
Sleep expert Clete Kushida didn’t find the results all that surprising. He is a doctor at Stanford University Medical Center in California. The idea that lost sleep harms the body is true.
Why didn’t healthy food help healing time? Smith can think of a few possibilities. The healthy drinks may have helped a little --- just not enough to show up clearly in the small numbers of men and women tested here. Different people need different amount of time to become better.
For people who can’t avoid losing sleep, scientists still don’t have a good way to help them. Smith says, “If you want to become better faster, your best bet for now is to get more ‘vitamin Z’.
