As we know, Zhang Guimei was the founder of China’s first and only free public high school for girls.     1    

Zhang was born in Heilongjiang.     2     In 1996, after her husband’s death, she volunteered to teach at Huaping Centre Middle School, and became the director of the county’s orphan-age (孤儿院) in 2001.

After a short period of working, she learned that most abandoned (被遗弃的) children in the area were girls.     3     Many of Huaping’s girls were leaving school early to marry or earn a living.

    4     “If a woman was educated, how would she abandon her child? I really want to stop this vicious cycle (恶性循环) of uneducated mothers and children,” she said in a CCTV report.

With Zhang’s effort, around 100 girls from poor local families came to live and study at the new school.     5     Zhang went on her work for the next 15 years. That’s especially worthy of respect considering nearly half of the teachers in the countryside in China give up because of the poor environment, low income and lack of respect.
