Bi Sheng was born in the Song Dynasty. He lived in a small village which lies in Huanggang today. He invented the printing around 600 AD (公元). He was the world’s first inventor of the printing. It is about 400 years earlier than the printing in Germany.
The printing is also called the movable type printing. But how did it work in the past?
First of all, the clay was made into movable types. Then words were engraved carefully onto the types. After that the words were chosen and put in right order in a box according to the text. Next, the workers brushed ink onto the movable types. Finally the types could be used for printing. They could be used again and again for different books.
The movable type printing plays an important role in Chinese culture. With the help of it, Chinese culture spread around the world more quickly. At the same time, the movable type printing was widely used in the world at that time. As a result, more and more culture communication among countries took place.

In 1876, when the first telephone was shown to the public, electricity was still new and little understood. Many people had died working with electricity in the early days. That's why most people did not easily accept that it was safe to hear a human voice through the phone.
But on the morning of March 10, 1876, Alexander Bell, and his assistant Thomas Watson, had no such fears. Bell, and Watson had been struggling to make their new invention, the telephone, work. Bell sent his assistant to a room in the basement. In a room upstairs, the telephone inventor spoke seven little words into his invention. These simple words changed the world forever. "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you. "
The telephone was born in March 1876, but it took a few more years for it to gain respect. Bell had to overcome the fears about electricity before people took his invention serious. He also had to convince(使信服) people there was a need for such a machine.

There’s a new AI robot: ChatGPT. The tool is an AI chatbot system. OpenAI brought it to the public in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve. ChatGPT remembers the main information of your dialogue, using previous(先前的) questions and answers to provide its replies. It gets the answers from a large amount of information on the Internet.
You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound very authoritative(权威的).
ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research period. But when too many people visit its site, it overloads and can’t deal with what you ask for. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when there are fewer people. If you do not want to wait, there is a choice for you. And this service does come at a cost of $20 monthly.
However, ChatGPT can’t replace Google at present. ChatGPT is a robot that provides replies to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge because of its programming, but Google has unlimited knowledge which is renewed every day.
1. What can people ask ChatGPT?2. How long is ChatGPT known by people?
3. Which would you like to use, ChatGPT or Google? Why?
This Monday there was a surprise winner of Dr Safak’s Design-an-app Competition. Anna, who only came to this school last month, won first prize for her excellent Timetabler app. Her app helps students organize their time.
The competition started at the beginning of May. Dr Safak said, “The app must be easy to install (安装) and use on a mobile phone, and it must help students with their schoolwork. It shouldn’t use lots of battery.” Throughout the month students talked about possible winners and everyone said the same thing, “If Bruce enters it, he’ll win it.” “Bruce knows everything about computers,” said Harry.
Everyone was surprised when Dr Safak told them the winner of the competition. Anna is new to the school and very quiet. Nobody knew that she designed her first app when she was only seven years old. Now, she is the star of the software (软件) class and everyone wants to talk about her app. “It makes it easy to plan your time! You tell the app what exams you need to study for. You also tell it when the exams are.
Then you click on the special ‘Plan’ icon and the app makes a timetable for you.” said Diana. “I love it!” said Jim. “With Anna’s app, I have more time for studying because the app does the planning for me.”

3. How did students feel when they knew the competition result?

Today, we collect the wind’s energy with wind turbines (涡轮). A turbine is similar to a windmill. It is a very tall tower with two or three blades (叶片) at the top. These blades are turned by the wind. The blades turn a generator (发电机) located inside the tower, which creates power.
In places like the Midwest and along coasts, winds can provide cheap power. Another great advantage of wind power is that it is a clean form of energy. Wind turbines don’t burn oil or coal and don’t pollute air.
Wind is not always an ideal (理想的) source (来源) of energy, however. Wind speed changes from time to time, depending on the time of the day, weather and location. Wind turbines can be also dangerous for bats and birds. These animals can’t always tell how fast the blades are moving and crash (撞击) into them.

This doesn’t seem so bad. However, there are a lot of other costs behind the low price. It’s clear that the fashion industry is terrible for the earth. It uses a lot of resources (资源) and pollutes the environment with waste.
Fashion is one of the least sustainable (可持续的) industries. We have all become our own waste, collecting fashion waste in our homes. It doesn’t just take up space but also ends up in landfills (垃圾场). Three out of every five pieces of clothing are sent to landfills. Luckily, second-hand clothing is becoming popular. The reason is that it’s cheaper. More and more people choose to buy second-hand clothing. The value of the second-hand market may reach $80 billion by 2029, an increase of 185% compared to the value at present.
In fact, there is still an even better choice. It’s not to shop at all. Making full use of what you have already had is the best choice of shopping.
