It’s reported that Shenzhou-16 will bring international paintings by teenagers from 10 African countries to the China Space Station.
Jing Haipeng, one of the astronauts for the Shenzhou-16 manned spaceflight mission, shared the information during the Shenzhou-16’s press conference (新闻发布会) at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in Northwest China’s Gansu Province.
These paintings were beautifully drawn by teenagers from 10 African countries including Algeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Egypt, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Nigeria, Somalia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
“Indeed, we have this special and meaningful purpose, which is to show international paintings for the first time on the China Space Station, and these excellent works are from the winners of ‘Tianhe Award’ for young friends from the 10 African countries,” Jing explained. “At present, we have not seen the paintings. I believe they will be bright. Exploring the vast universe (宇宙) is the common dream of all human, no matter the race, age, or nationality. We expect to join hands with all peace-loving people to create a better tomorrow,” he continued.
“We will take the children’s best youth, best friendship, and best dreams into space, plant the seeds (种子) of science, friendship, and dreams on the China Space Station, and let them grow and bear fruit,” Jing hoped.

A young star is blue and very hot. A middle-aged star is yellow. It cools and becomes a red giant. Finally, the star explodes. The light of a star tells astronomers many things about the star. Annie Jump Cannon was an American astronomer who carefully classified(分级)stars by looking at their light.
Annie Jump Cannon was born in 1863. Her mother taught her about the constellations(星座)when she was a girl. Annie was interested in studying the stars when she grew up. But not many women went to college in those days. Also, Annie had an illness that caused her lost most of her hearing. But these things didn’t stop Annie from earning two college degrees.
Cannon was hired to work at the Harvard College Observatory(天文台). Astronomers there used telescopes and took photographs of the sky. It was an exciting new science.
The light from each star passed through a prism(棱镜)in the telescope. A prism is a piece of cut glass. Light passing through a prism is separated into a rainbow. Cannon studied the photos of each band of colors. Almost all photos were black and white. She could not see the colors. She could only see different dark lines. She used them to classify stars from younger and very hot to older and cooler.
Annie Jump Cannon classified more than 300, 000 stars! Her star catalog is still used by astronomers all over the world. During her lifetime, Cannon received many honors. In 1934, an award was named for her. The Annie J. Cannon Award in Astronomy is given every year. It is given to a woman astronomer from North America.

The 41-year-old Wang became the first woman astronaut to enter Tiangong space station. Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. She told herself, “China now has a male(男性)astronaut. When will there be a female one?”At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army.
After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate(候选人)to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard getting the same training as men, including the pull-ups(引体向上)and barbells(杠铃). “The space environment won’t change because you are a woman,” she told Xinhua.
The hardest part is the high-G training. Sitting in a spinning(旋转的)machine, Wang would become blind for a while because her brain was short of blood. “There’s a red button(按钮),” said Wang. “If you can’t bear it, you can press(按动)it to stop.” But Wang never used it. “There is no such red button in my heart.”
That strong spirit finally led to realizing her dream in 2013. She joined the team for the Shenzhou X mission(任务).
Wang carries the spirit of every young woman who dreams of something big.

On the earth, we put food on a plate and water in a glass. Gravity(重力) holds the food down and keeps the water in the glass. But there is almost no gravity in space, so food can float(漂浮) away, and astronauts must eat and drink carefully.
Sleeping is very different in space. Some astronauts like to float in the air, but most like to be in a sleeping bag. They tie the bag to a wall so that they won’ t float away at night.
Exercise is very important in space. On the earth, your legs carry your body, but in space, astronauts float. So they do not use their legs often. This is very bad for their legs, so they must exercise for thirty minutes every day.
After a day’s work astronauts relax. They may listen to music, read, watch films, play games, or talk to their friends and families on the radio. Sometimes they just enjoy floating in the air.
