①After the Yangtze River Protection Law, China passed the Yellow River Protection Law in October, 2022. It is China’s second river basin (流域) protection law.
②Due to long-time human activities, the Yellow River’s ecology (生态) has been greatly destroyed (破坏), so the new law is pretty important and timely. The Yellow River is regarded as China’s mother river. For 3,000 years, its basin served as the nation’s political, economic and cultural center. The river runs through nine provinces and regions in our country, feeding 12 percent of the Chinese population. The Yellow River Protection Law stresses the need for the protection of the ecosystem. It also calls for flood control.
③For generations (代), flood control was the major challenge for the people living along the Yellow River. The river ever burst (决堤) its banks in 1953 when it rose about two-thirds of the way up an embankment (路堤) in Kaifeng, putting millions of people at risk. In autumn 2021, some areas on the lower reaches (下游) of the river saw their worst flooding for twenty years.
④The new law explains the need to protect and spread the Yellow River culture. Every autumn, an arts festival featuring Manhan Opera, is hold in Jungar Banner, Inner Mongolia, to carry forward the time-honored Yellow River art forms. Manhan Opera was created in the Yellow River basin. The art form mixes the Yellow River with grassland culture.
⑤The new law also calls for the best use of cultural heritage sites (文化遗址), such as museums. At a museum in Gaoqing County, Shandong, more than 20,000 items that have something to do with the Yellow River are on display, including documents (记录) on management of the waterway, tools used in the Yellow River basin, and ancient books and letters about the river.

Garbage sorting is a big problem because there is too much garbage these days. It is bad for our environment. In fact, we can make use of some garbage again. But first, we need to sort it.
For example, if you put an old battery (电池) into the “harmful waste” bin, people can use it to make new batteries. But if you don’t, the battery will end up somewhere else. Then, it will pollute the environment.
Garbage sorting and recycling around the world
Germany: There are big machines in supermarkets. You can put bottles in the machines and get money back.
Japan: A truck playing music comes to people’s doors to pick up their garbage. There are eight or more kinds of garbage. If you sort any of them wrong, you will get a notice on your door.
Indonesia: People can take buses for free if they give plastic bottles to bus stations. An hour-long bus ride costs three large bottles.
Four kinds of garbage in Shanghai
Recyclable garbage includes paper, books, plastic items, and glass bottles. Harmful garbage includes lamps, batteries, and other things with harmful chemicals. Wet garbage usually comes from the kitchen, such as food and vegetables. Dry garbage is anything you cannot put into the other three bins such as pens and towels.

Climate change has made a great danger to bird habitats (homes of birds). Take Poyang Lake as an example. As an important habitat for the seriously endangered Siberian crane (白鹤), Poyang Lake has experienced unusual rises and falls in recent years.
“In some years, the lake experiences floods (洪水), while in others it experiences a shortage of rainfall. Both of these situations lead to less food in the cranes’ habitat,” Qian Fawen, a leader from the National Bird Center of China told China Daily.
To solve such habitat problems, China has recently named 1,140 places as important living and wintering places, and most of them are located in wetlands. To protect China’s wetlands, a law was also made in 2022 to control human activities at important national wetlands and stop harmful activities. According to the law, people can’t overuse the land or farm too much. What’s more, they can’t pour waste water into the wetlands.
Since these methods have worked well, more birds have been seen wintering in the nation’s wetlands, including some new species (物种). In February, Hunan Province reported that 72 species of waterbirds had spent the past winter at Dongting Lake, including Eurasian cranes (欧亚鹤) which haven’t appeared in the area for five years. The number of spoonbills (篦鹭), another endangered species has increased from 300 in the 1980s to more than 5,000 at present, according to the report of the government. All of these cases show a hopeful future.

I am a plastic bottle. A week ago, I was on a supermarket shelf. I had a normal life. I felt happy. Then a woman put me in her shopping basket. The woman took me home and put me in the fridge. However, only a few hours later, she took me out of the fridge and drank the water inside me. Then she threw me into a letter bin. I have never felt so empty and alone.
Early the next morning, a man took me out of the litter bin. He threw me and the other rubbish into the back of a truck. There were so many terrible smells. Then I was pushed together with the rest of the rubbish. Soon I was completely flat(扁平的). I slept for a while. When I woke up, I found myself in a terrible place. Everything around me smells terrible. I felt afraid. I kept hoping that I would be moved somewhere else. Then huge trucks came and covered us with a lot of soil.
I asked another bottle what would happen to us. He said that we would never leave this crowded place, but would have to stay here for thousand of years.
“Why can’t they reuse or recycle us?” I cried.

We asked about 2,000 people what they would do during the summer vacation. Most of the survey-takers (接受调查的人) agreed that the summer vacation was free from homework and that they could relax during the vacation.
Alexis said, “At school, I’m really tired, so during the summer vacation I can read books and do many outdoor activities.”
Amy is in high school. After school, she sometimes works in a cafe. She told us, “It’s a chance to relax after a hard school year—sleep more, and visit my friends more.”
We also asked them if they would be too busy or kind of bored. About half (52%) of the survey-takers said they would be busy during the summer vacation but still have time to relax. And that is how it should be.
But not everyone said the summer vacation would be the right balance (平衡) between being busy and relaxing. Many thought that they would be too bored.
How bored or busy people feel during the summer vacation depends on how old they are. Survey-takers in their early teens were more likely (可能的) to be bored. Among them, about 40% said they would be bored and only about 10% thought they would be too busy.

The Use of Different Maps | |

When tourists read these maps, it is easy for them to find where to go and what to see in a place and it is easy for them to go and find their ways to these places. | Distribution maps(分布图) use colors or signs to show facts about an area. For example, where different languages are spoken, how many people live in an area, how cold and hot some places are, or if a place is short of water. |
Road maps show large areas so that people can plan long journeys. Different types of roads are given different numbers. For example, if you want to go to Wood Green, you just follow No. 621 Road and keep looking at the road signs. | Some maps, such as railway maps, use straight lines to show everything. This is easy for people to read. Trains are fast. People don’t have to think about small places they go past. They just need to know the two ends of their trips. |
