Many of us spend time going around areas of water, like going for walks by rivers and lakes—or swimming in a pool, but if you see someone in trouble in the water, do you know how to help him or her?
A life-saving course can teach you how to help a person who has trouble in the water. What tools and methods should you use to save them and how to control your feelings when you’re around the water? These skills are usually taught in a swimming pool.
The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) provides courses in the UK. It has a program about water-safety for children aged between 8 and 12. It teaches things such as how to swim safely.
The RLSS wants everyone to know the water safety rules. These are to “stop and think” if the area has any danger. Always “stay together” with friends and family, and swim at a safe place.
In an emergency (紧急情况), call 119 and throw something that floats (漂浮) to the person in trouble. If you are the person in trouble, stay calm (冷静), float on your back and call for help.

Nobody imagines that, one day, they might be left on a desert island—but it could happen. So it's a good idea to learn few key skills that would help you to survive if it happened to you.
The first thing you need to do is to make a shelter on the beach, near the sea, so that you have a good view of any ships that pass your island. Your most important task is finding a way to get off the land, so you can’t miss any opportunities of seeing somebody who could rescue you.
It's a good idea to build your shelter near some trees. It will provide shade from the hot sun. If you get sunburned you won’ t be able to carry out the tasks you need to do to stay alive. If there were coconut trees, you could also use the oil from the coconut to protect your skin.
Obviously, you need to stay out of the way of any harmful animals or insects. Make a bed that is off the ground—you don't want to share your bed with snakes or other creepy crawlies.
If you are out in the hot sun all day, you will need about ten litres per day of fresh water. If you can't find a stream on the island, rain water will be your best chance of surviving. You need to make containers(容器)to catch and store rain water. Large plants with huge leaves are a good way to collect water. But never drink sea water—it will make you even more thirsty.
Finally, you need to do anything possible to be seen and rescued. If you don't have what you need to make a fire, you can write "HELP" on the beach using rocks to spell out the word.
A.Make sure somebody sees you |
B.Make a shelter and watch the sea carefully. |
C.Make containers to store sea water. |
D.Avoid dangerous wildlife. |
E.Protect yourself from the hot sunshine. |
F.Drink plenty. |

Some adults think it would probably never happen to them, so they don’t teach their children what to do. Before it’s too late, here are ways to help you prepare your child for a disaster:
Educate: It is always good to let your child know about possible disasters. This doesn’t mean children have to live in fear. When teaching them about disasters, keep the conversation positive(积极的)by telling them there is a solution to the disaster. Keep the conversations short, allow for questions and answer honestly.
Prepare: Always be prepared, that is the best advice for children. For example, when preparing for bad weather, get the tools you need, like candles, radios, food, water and medicine. Teach your child what is needed in certain disasters so that they know what is available for them, if ever needed.
Plan: You should always have a plan for you and your child for any dangerous situation. Write out a simple list that they can read. The plan could start with “listen to an adult’s advice and/or call 119”.
Practice: Once you have got the correct safety tools and worked out the right plan, practice every few months. Practicing what to do during a disaster with your child will help them if the time comes.
Disasters can’t be avoided but they can be lessened(减轻)once you are prepared and ready for one.
