In New York City public schools, 176 different languages are spoken among more than one million students. For 160,000 children, English is not their first language. New York’s Department of Education makes learning 1 (good) for these students by providing dual-language (双语) programs. Students are taught in two languages, English and 2 one, such as French, German or Japanese. Math, social studies, 3 /ˈsaɪəns/ and all other regular courses are taught in both languages.
