OpenAI has shocked the world with its latest creation, Sora. The AI tool can produce videos up to one minute long. Many people worry that the tool will put many filmmakers out of business.

Similar worries have been voiced since the appearance of the AI chatbot ChatGPT and text-to-image programs like Dall E. Many are afraid that industries (行业) such as programming, translation, teaching and design will all disappear. It seems we can turn to AI for just about anything we want to do.

Does that mean we no longer need to gain knowledge and skills ourselves? Well, the answer is “No”. Even in the age of AI, knowledge is still powerful. In fact, it may ask you to use your brain more. AI is knowledgeable, but for now, it needs instructions (指令). In other words, you must communicate with it. For example, you want advice on how to get a better return on your savings. If you don’t know anything about finances (经济), you’ll have trouble asking the right questions.

You also need to exercise your imagination more actively. Take the Chinese New Year celebration video for example. You need to be clear about your expectations and use your language skills to describe them in as much detail as possible. Where is the celebration taking place? What performances are going on? What are the performers wearing? You may also need to be a bit professional (专业的). For example, “Throw in a close-up of a dragon dancer.”

And keep in mind that AI can make mistakes. After AI gives you an answer, you need to judge (判断) whether all the information is correct and up to date. To do this, you need at least some basic knowledge about the related (相关的) subjects.

If you think the development of AI has given you the right to be lazy, it’s time to stop day dreaming. Work harder on your studies so that you’ll be able to work with AI.

1. What do people worry about as AI develops according to Paragraph 1&2?
A.It may take away many people’s jobs.

C.People have to communicate more.
D.People have to work longer than before.
2. Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A.People need to use more kinds of languages to create a video with Sora.
B.People no longer need to study and gain knowledge when they begin to use AI.
C.AI will make all industries such as programming, translation and design disappear.
D.People need related knowledge of the topic to judge if the AI’s answer is correct.
3. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Instructions.B.Expectations.C.Language skills.D.Performances.
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Sora Has Shocked the WorldB.OpenAI Makes You Lazy

文章大意:这篇短文主要介绍了迄今为止建造的体积最大也是最强大的太空科学望远镜——韦伯。

【推荐1】On Dec. 25, 2021, a new age of space science started when NASA set up the James Webb Space Telescope (望远镜) . It will change our understanding of space.

According to NASA, Webb is the world’s largest and most powerful telescope. The old Hubble Space Telescope mostly sees what we see-light, But Webb sees infrared (红外线的) light, which is invisible to the human eye. It can make new discoveries by examining stars inside those dust clouds. It will be able to“look at’”the first light after the Big Bang (宇宙大爆炸) which created our universe, as well as how young stars grow.

Webb “sees” by using mirrors to collect infrared light from the universe. The bigger the mirror is, the more details it can see. The telescope is as tall as a three-story building and as big as a tennis court. is so big that it has to fold its mirrors to fit inside the rocket, Once in orbit (轨道), they will unfold, creating one large mirror.

The telescope flew 29 days to reach its orbit, which is more than one million kilometers away from the earth. After six months, it sent back its first picture.

The building of the telescope started in 2004. About 40 million hours of work, thousands of scientists from 14 countries, 10 billion dollars and 1 heavy-lift rocket made it all possible.

Now it’s ready to help us answer key questions, such as where we came from and whether we’re alone in the universe.

【推荐2】Travellers have known for a long time that lighter food will make their journey easier. It is no different in the space program. Travellers use rehydratable foods. Water is taken out from the foods during preparation, so travellers do not have to carry very much weight with them. Taking rehydratable foods makes it easier to travel. All weight going into space causes raising amount of fuel. It is important to reduce as much weight as possible. Because the fuel cells on the spaceship produce water as a byproduct, water is easily produced. Therefore, taking rehydratable foods along with this water is reasonable because this reduces the amount of weight in the spaceship. The rehydratable foods also take up much less space, and space is valuable when there is not much space in a spaceship or space station.

In today’s class, we are going to carry out the process of making rehydratable food. First, read the instructions about making instant puddings. Calculate the amount of dry mix material necessary for one pudding. Record the amount. Nonfat dry milk is required when making instant pudding. Remember not to use whole milk. Calculate the amount of nonfat dry milk necessary for an instant pudding. Measure the dry mix material of the pudding and the proper amount of nonfat dry milk. and place both into a zip-locking bag. Shake and stir the dry materials until completely mixed. Pour the correct amount of water. Close the zip-locking bag, and shake the package until the materials completely mixed. That’s how we prepare a simple rehydratable food for space travel.

Here is more information about rehydratable space food.

Whole milk with fat in it can not be turned into rehydratable food and has a terrible taste. So nonfat dry milk must be used in space packaging. Orange juice is also difficult to rehydrate. till some astronauts request it. During the 1960s, scientists developed an orange-flavored juice called Tang, which can be used instead of orange juice in space.

1. Why are rehydratable foods necessary for space travel?
A.They are easier to cook.B.They are filled with water.
C.They help save fuel and space.D.They taste better than other foods.
2. Which shows the correct steps to make a rehydratable pudding?
a. Add water and mix all the materials.
b. Mix the dry mix material and nonfat dry milk.
c. Put the dry material and nonfat dry milk into a bag.
d. Get to know how to make an instant pudding by reading an instruction.
e. Calculate the amount of the dry mix material for a pudding and nonfat dry milk.
A.d, e, c, b, aB.d, c, b, a, eC.e, d, c, a, bD.e, c, b, a, d
3. What may a spaceship probably carry during the space travel?
A.Some fresh nonfat milk.B.Some fresh whole milk.
C.Fresh orange juice.D.A special juice called Tang
4. What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To show students different kinds of space food.B.To introduce a type of food made for space travel.
C.To encourage students to explore the outer space.D.To teach students how to make an instant pudding.

【推荐3】A computer program that could help catch and even translats(翻译) messages from aliens in outer space has been started by a British scientist, Dr. Elliott.

If aliens are discovered one day, scientists are afraid that their language may make it impossible to understand them. But John Elliott has come up with a program that can figure out(算出) the structure(结构) of their language. He thinks that’s the first step in understanding what they are saying.

Dr. Elliott’s program would compare an alien language to a database(数据库) of 60 different languages in the world to look for a similar structure. He believes that even an alien language will have its own structure. “A language has to be structured in a certain way, or it will be harder to use, he told New Scientist magazine.

Studies have shown that it is possible to know if a signal(信号)carries a language rather than a picture or music. Dr. Elliott has gone a step further by finding a way languages have different word orders, Dr. Elliott has set up a library of the sentence structures of 60 human languages.

If a message is received from outer space, it could be compared against this database. Scientist would then be able to see if it's similar to any human language, or a mix of the language.

However, Dr. Elliott also said that in order to translate what the aliens are actually saying, it may still be necessary to have a code book(电码本). so there is still a long way to go.

3. The paragraph 4 mainly tells us _________.
A.some necessary conditions for making the program work
B.Dr. Elliott’s findings about different kinds of languages
C.three important functions(作用)of the program
D.the number of sentence structures of human languages
4. We can infer from the story that _________.
A.Not all languages have their own structure
B.the structure of alien languages is similar to that of human languages
C.to translate alien languages, there is much work to do
D.alien languages are signals carrying pictures and music
