OpenAI has shocked the world with its latest creation, Sora. The AI tool can produce videos up to one minute long. Many people worry that the tool will put many filmmakers out of business.
Similar worries have been voiced since the appearance of the AI chatbot ChatGPT and text-to-image programs like Dall E. Many are afraid that industries (行业) such as programming, translation, teaching and design will all disappear. It seems we can turn to AI for just about anything we want to do.
Does that mean we no longer need to gain knowledge and skills ourselves? Well, the answer is “No”. Even in the age of AI, knowledge is still powerful. In fact, it may ask you to use your brain more. AI is knowledgeable, but for now, it needs instructions (指令). In other words, you must communicate with it. For example, you want advice on how to get a better return on your savings. If you don’t know anything about finances (经济), you’ll have trouble asking the right questions.
You also need to exercise your imagination more actively. Take the Chinese New Year celebration video for example. You need to be clear about your expectations and use your language skills to describe them in as much detail as possible. Where is the celebration taking place? What performances are going on? What are the performers wearing? You may also need to be a bit professional (专业的). For example, “Throw in a close-up of a dragon dancer.”
And keep in mind that AI can make mistakes. After AI gives you an answer, you need to judge (判断) whether all the information is correct and up to date. To do this, you need at least some basic knowledge about the related (相关的) subjects.
If you think the development of AI has given you the right to be lazy, it’s time to stop day dreaming. Work harder on your studies so that you’ll be able to work with AI.

According to NASA, Webb is the world’s largest and most powerful telescope. The old Hubble Space Telescope mostly sees what we see-light, But Webb sees infrared (红外线的) light, which is invisible to the human eye. It can make new discoveries by examining stars inside those dust clouds. It will be able to“look at’”the first light after the Big Bang (宇宙大爆炸) which created our universe, as well as how young stars grow.
Webb “sees” by using mirrors to collect infrared light from the universe. The bigger the mirror is, the more details it can see. The telescope is as tall as a three-story building and as big as a tennis court. is so big that it has to fold its mirrors to fit inside the rocket, Once in orbit (轨道), they will unfold, creating one large mirror.
The telescope flew 29 days to reach its orbit, which is more than one million kilometers away from the earth. After six months, it sent back its first picture.
The building of the telescope started in 2004. About 40 million hours of work, thousands of scientists from 14 countries, 10 billion dollars and 1 heavy-lift rocket made it all possible.
Now it’s ready to help us answer key questions, such as where we came from and whether we’re alone in the universe.

Water is taken out from the foods during preparation, so travellers do not have to carry very much weight with them. Taking rehydratable foods makes it easier to travel. All weight going into space causes raising amount of fuel. It is important to reduce as much weight as possible. Because the fuel cells on the spaceship produce water as a byproduct, water is easily produced. Therefore, taking rehydratable foods along with this water is reasonable because this reduces the amount of weight in the spaceship. The rehydratable foods also take up much less space, and space is valuable when there is not much space in a spaceship or space station.
In today’s class, we are going to carry out the process of making rehydratable food. First, read the instructions about making instant puddings. Calculate the amount of dry mix material necessary for one pudding. Record the amount. Nonfat dry milk is required when making instant pudding. Remember not to use whole milk. Calculate the amount of nonfat dry milk necessary for an instant pudding. Measure the dry mix material of the pudding and the proper amount of nonfat dry milk. and place both into a zip-locking bag. Shake and stir the dry materials until completely mixed. Pour the correct amount of water. Close the zip-locking bag, and shake the package until the materials completely mixed. That’s how we prepare a simple rehydratable food for space travel.
Here is more information about rehydratable space food.
Whole milk with fat in it can not be turned into rehydratable food and has a terrible taste. So nonfat dry milk must be used in space packaging. Orange juice is also difficult to rehydrate. till some astronauts request it. During the 1960s, scientists developed an orange-flavored juice called Tang, which can be used instead of orange juice in space.
1. Why are rehydratable foods necessary for space travel?A.They are easier to cook. | B.They are filled with water. |
C.They help save fuel and space. | D.They taste better than other foods. |

If aliens are discovered one day, scientists are afraid that their language may make it impossible to understand them. But John Elliott has come up with a program that can figure out(算出) the structure(结构) of their language. He thinks that’s the first step in understanding what they are saying.
Dr. Elliott’s program would compare an alien language to a database(数据库) of 60 different languages in the world to look for a similar structure. He believes that even an alien language will have its own structure. “A language has to be structured in a certain way, or it will be harder to use, he told New Scientist magazine.
Studies have shown that it is possible to know if a signal(信号)carries a language rather than a picture or music. Dr. Elliott has gone a step further by finding a way languages have different word orders, Dr. Elliott has set up a library of the sentence structures of 60 human languages.
If a message is received from outer space, it could be compared against this database. Scientist would then be able to see if it's similar to any human language, or a mix of the language.
However, Dr. Elliott also said that in order to translate what the aliens are actually saying, it may still be necessary to have a code book(电码本). so there is still a long way to go.

It is widely believed that the back seat of a car is safer than the front seat in a highway accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US, accident statistics (统计数字) show the middle seat in the back is the best choice.
It turns out that the middle seat is the safest because in a side-impact crash (侧面碰撞), the outer seats are closest to the possible point of impact. So, the person in the middle of the back seat sits further from that possible point.
Is the back seat always the safest in a car accident?
As with most studies, guess what, there’s another idea. Looking further into the statistics, they find age matters. For example, the back seat still offers the highest safety level for children under 9 years old.
At the same time, the statistics also show that for passengers aged 55 and older, the back seat may be less safe than the front. In fact, when in the back seat, older passengers suffered the highest risk of being seriously or fatally injured than any other age group. Not surprisingly, the researchers say more study is needed on that finding.

It was a bright spring morning in Rochester, New York, neighborhood. Three young men, their hearts full of excitement, were preparing for a road trip across the United States. It would be the adventure (冒险) of a lifetime. I was one of those young men. For my friends and me, going on a cross-country exploration was at the top of our bucket lists!
A bucket list simply lists things you want to see, try or accomplish (完成) within your lifetime. But it’s not something simple like learning to ride a bike or passing a math test. You need to dream big! This may not sound practical, but it’s a good mental exercise and a lot of fun. Making a bucket list can push you to do something extraordinary (超乎寻常的)!
Making a bucket list can also help you know about your values. People live busy lives, so it’s easy to get tangled up (纠缠) in life’s daily routines. But taking time to think carefully about what you really want from life can help you get a fresh perspective (视角).
If you’re ready to start making your own bucket list, you first need to decide what to put on it. You could make a list of outlandish (稀奇古怪) things you’d like to do, such as doing an underwater photo shoot as a mermaid. If you love adventure, your list might include learning to sail a sailboat. If you love animals, you could put a trip to Tokyo to visit an owl cafe on your list.
If you can’t think of anything to put on your list, then learn something new! My interest in visiting Chile came from reading an article in a magazine. The universe interests me, and I want to learn more about it! Now it’s your turn. What strikes your fancy? Not until you dream BIG can you discover what you are capable of (有能力做).
1. The first thing in the writer’s buket list is ______.A.to have a cross-country road trip | B.to learn to ride a bike | C.to pass a math test |
A.the bucket to put your dream should not be too small |
B.you need to list as many things you want to do as possible |
C.the things you need to list are extraordinary not simple |
A.Para 1 and Para2 | B.Para 2 and Para3 | C.Para 3 and Para 4 |
A.visiting an owl café in Tokyo | B.reading an article in a magazine | C.making a bucket list |
A.a good place to learn something new |
B.a way to find things you want to do |
C.the step to achieve your dream |

February 29th is called a leap day. And the year with a February 29th in it is called a leap year. 2020 was such a year.
As a verb, the word “leap” means to jump, or to move quickly.
In a leap year, the dates jump over one day of the week. Let me explain. In 2017, the last day of the year, December 31st, fell on Sunday. In 2018, it fell on Monday. In 2019, it fell on Tuesday. But in 2020, December 31st, fell on Thursday. It jumped right over Wednesday.
The reason for a leap year is because our calendar does not follow the Earth’s orbit (轨道) around the sun exactly. Each year, we have a little time left over. So every four years, we put all that time together into an extra (额外的) day.
Some people choose to marry on February 29th because it is an unusual date. But some ancient people would likely tell couples (夫妻) not to do it. Leap years were believed to be difficult, and leap days were unlucky. But to be honest, these have no scientific basis.
1. How often does a February 29th come up on the calendar according to the passage?A.Once a year. | B.Twice a year. | C.Three times a year. | D.Four times a year. |
A.It means a day is added in the calendar of the year. |
B.It means a week is added in the calendar of the year. |
C.It means a month is added in the calendar of the year. |
D.It means a year is added in the calendar of the year. |
A.Saturday. | B.Friday. | C.Sunday. | D.Monday. |
