It was well-known that Bill Gates is a famous American co-founder of Microsoft in 1975. Gates and his childhood partner Paul Allen founded Microsoft Corporation, making it the world’s largest computer software provider. At the age of 31, he became the richest man in the world and had topped Forbes global rich list for many years. However, he doesn’t just know about computers. Gates is a great reader. What books change your life?
The Great Gatsby(《了不起的盖茨比》) is special to me in a different way. The Great Gatsby is written by the famous American writer Fitzgerald in the 20th century. The book describes how Gatsby, who was born in a poor family, finally changed from a poor man to a “great” rich man in people’s minds. Like many people, I first read it as a teenager, but I have re-read it many times. This line is my favourite, “His dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to get it.”
A few years ago, I read Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels. It changed how I think about the world. The book argues that our willingness to stand violence (暴力) is dropping fast. The world is actually becoming better in lots of ways. Few people can bear things like war and violence, but we can make progress. This idea has encouraged me to keep running a charity.
What’s your favourite book from childhood?
Books were a big part of my childhood. It’s hard to pick my favourite. I like The World Book Encyclopedia(《世界百科全书》. I read the whole set of it when I was a kid.
Do you think reading has been important to your success?
Of course! Every book teaches me something new. Reading drives me forward in the work I do. I’d like to thank my parents-they encouraged me to read.

When Shanghai introduced a new rubbish-sorting policy in July last year, the city’s residents (居民) took some time to get used to it. They joked that every time they took out their rubbish, the workers standing by the bins would ask, “What kind of rubbish are you?”
Starting on May 1, Beijing joined many Chinese cities by introducing a new rubbish-sorting policy, People’s Daily reported. Residents should sort their rubbish into four groups: kitchen, recyclable, hazardous (有害的) and other waste.
These groups are represented by four different colors of rubbish bins – green, blue, red and gray. Those who fail to sort their rubbish correctly may face fines of up to 200 yuan, Xinhua reported.
The way Beijing sorts its rubbish sounds different from cities like Shanghai and Qingdao. These cities use four different groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Although their names are different, the groups are actually the same. Wet rubbish in Shanghai is, in fact, kitchen rubbish. And dry rubbish is the same as other waste, China Youth Daily reported.
To help residents sort their rubbish correctly, the Beijing government is offering online guidelines. If people don’t know how to throw away rubbish, they can search for it on the WeChat account Guanchenglishi (管城理市) to find out. By searching a key word or taking a photo, people can immediately find out which group their waste belongs in.

The regulation came into effect on April 1, and replaced an earlier one which was introduced in 2002. “It is necessary to publish such a regulation to improve the health standards of school food,” said an officer, who works in the Ministry of Education(教育部). Under the new regulation, school officers from kindergartens to high schools are required to eat together with students during the school meals. The plan will guide them to pay more attention to school food safety, as well as find food problems in time. Student menus, food sources, suppliers(供应商)and other food information are required to be shown in public by schools once a week. According to this regulation, students’ parents are also invited to eat with students in school to take away their doubts. The regulation said schools should keep an eye on developing students’ healthy eating habits and pay close attention to food safety. In general, food stores are not allowed in kindergartens, primary schools and high schools.
