Gin is an alcoholic (含酒精的) drink. It gets its taste mainly from fruits and flowers. Indlovu Gin comes from South Africa. It is made using elephant dung (粪).
Les and Paula Ansley make Indlovu. Indlovu means “elephant” in the Zulu language. They came up with the idea a couple of years ago. They went on safari (游猎) to see African animals. On safari, they learned that elephants eat many fruits and flowers. But they digest less than 33% of their food. The rest comes out in their dung. “Because of that, elephant dung has a great mix of plants and flowers,” Les said.
Weeks after their trip, Paula, a gin lover, had a strange idea in the middle of the night. “Why don’t we let others do the hard work of collecting?” she said to her husband. “And we will make gin from it.”
The couple tried to get some dung from the park where they went on safari. It was sent in the mail. Now they collect the dung themselves, using their hands. The dung is dried and washed. Next, the Ansleys use a process to kill germs (细菌). It is then dried again and soaked (浸泡) in gin.
“The gin tastes good,” the Ansleys said. They mark the bottles with the date and place where the dung was collected. They said the taste changes with the place and season.
At first, people didn’t want to taste the gin. But now the drink is popular with tourists who want to bring home a strange gift. The gin is sold at hunting camps, airports and online.

These days, if you want to travel from New York to Beijing, the flight takes about 16 hours. You also have to wait at the airport, and sometimes you have to transfer(换乘)onto a different airplane. Right now, a company is developing something called ET3, which stands for “evacuated tube(真空管)transport technology(技术)”. Here’s how it works. A tube goes all the way from New York to Beijing. The tube is only a few meters wide. Capsules(舱)move through the tube. Six people can sit in one capsule. The capsules use electricity instead of oil. For international travel, the capsules can travel at about 6, 500 kilometers per hour. That’s much faster than airplanes—most modern airplanes usually only fly at about 800 kilometers per hour.
So how is this possible? How can these capsules travel so fast? The answer is that there is no air inside the tube. When airplanes fly, they have to move through air. The air slows the airplanes down. Because there isn’t any air in the ET3 tubes, the capsules are able to move at a very high speed. Also, the capsules are quite light. Each only weighs 183 kilograms.
There are other advantages to ET3. Because it uses electricity, it’s quite clean. Also, it’s a lot quieter than airplanes and cars. Finally, ET3 tubes and capsules don’t require very much building materials.
Of course, ET3 doesn’t come into use yet. The technology is still being developed. Developers still have to solve a lot of problems. The biggest problem is that right now ET3 would be far too expensive. In order to make ET3 cheaper, we will need much better technology.
It’s exciting to think of how ET3 will change the travel in the future. Who knows? Maybe someday you’ll be able to have lunch in New York and dinner in Beijing.

Multiple Intelligences
In our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made bigger influence than others. Different intelligences or learning styles might be the reason. A person’s learning style or “intelligence” is the method through which they get information most easily. The theory of multiple intelligences(多元智能理论) was put forward in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner in his book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, and it suggests that people are not born with all of the intelligences they will ever have, and traditional ideas about intelligence, measured (测量) by IQ tests, are very limited (有限的). He listed some different intelligences to describe different abilities. These intelligences include linguistic (语言的), logical-mathematical (逻辑数学的), visual-spatial (视觉空间的), bodily-kinesthetic (艺体的), musical and so on.
Dr. Howard Gardner notes that the linguistic and logical-mathematical are the most typed valued in school and society. American schools and culture focus attention on these two intelligences so people who are good at expressing or logical thinking are treated differently: they are likely to get more respect and are offered better rewards and chances. However, Dr. Gardner says that we should place equal (平等的) attention on people who have the other intelligences: artists, musicians, naturalists, designers, dancers, and athletes. Unluckily, many children don’t receive much attention and encouragement for these abilities in school. Many of these kids, in fact, end up being considered as not good enough ones because they are taught in a heavily linguistic or logical-mathematical classroom and not in a style favored to their type of intelligence.
Education can be much more interesting and help more students to learn better if teachers are encouraged to present lessons in all kinds of ways using music, group work, art activities, role-play, multimedia, field trips, and so on. The good news is that in America, hundreds of schools are now using the theory of multiple intelligences to redesign the way they educate children. Many adults find themselves in jobs that do not make the best use of their most highly developed intelligences.
