Lu Jialei, 14, from Hangzhou Foreign Language School, won the first place in the CCTV Chinese Characters Dictation Competition(《中国汉字听写大会》) on Oct. 18, 2013. About 160 students took part in it. The host read a word to each of them, explained its meaning and giving sentences. The contestant(比赛者) was required to write down the word within half a minute.

Winning the contest was a “surprise” to Lu. “I am not the smartest one,” she said. “But I paid attention to details and did the best this time.”
“When others are interested in the plot of the story, she looks at how the author uses words and sentences to express himself or herself,” said Su Yunsheng, Lu’s Chinese teacher. Su is happy to see students like Lu find the beauty of Chinese language. “Besides using something Chinese and having Chinese traditional festivals, learning to write Chinese characters is also an important part of inheriting (传承) Chinese culture,” said Su.

SCIENTIFIC VIEWS Wuhan Daily July3, 2021 Can We Speak as Before? The Internet is a place where we can talk freely. But it is also a place where we pay little attention to whether or not our language ability is becoming poorer. According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, more than 76 percent of young people in China said they felt their Chinese language skills have declined (下降). They don’t use complex rhetorical technique (修辞手法) as often anymore. It is believed that digital (数字的) technology and emoji have changed their communication habits. For example, direct expression is the preferred way to communicate online. When one sees something funny, one will simply type “hahaha” or use “cry-laugh” emoji, Beijing Youth Daily noted. Also, copy and pasted (粘贴) culture is getting popular. People simply pick up expressions from the Internet without much thought. Many begin to use a fixed set of sentence patterns, such as “whenever you disagree with each other, you..”. Cai Xiaojin (not her real name) a teacher from, told China Youth Daily that words in general are being used less, For example, people can share photos online with little need for words to describe them. If this trend (趋势) continues, it could influence our way of thinking, People’s Daily noted. When we use expressions without thinking, it means we have become too lazy to express our real feelings. If teenagers accept casual (非正式不经意的) methods of expression like emojis, they could lose the ability to use words properly. To improve our language skills, experts suggest that we should try to think independently and develop our own language logic (逻辑). They also suggest that we should read more works of literature, “Keep using various words to show your own feelings,” said Shen Xiaolong, a professor in the Chinese department at Fudan University. |

In 1986, when farmers dug up soil to make bricks (砖块), they found relics again. Experts (专家) then found two pits (坑). The site’s total area is 12 square kilometers. Researchers from 34 universities and research groups began to unearth (发掘) them in October 2020.
Scientists found more than 1,000 cultural relics (文物), including bronzeware (青铜器), face masks and “divine (神圣的) trees” — bronze sculptures (雕塑) of trees. The surprises didn’t stop there. In the days of dinosaurs, the whole earth was warm and wet. There were many green forests. But the earth changed slowly all the time. When parts of the earth became cold and dry, the forests there died. Then dinosaurs could not find enough food to eat. This must be one reason why dinosaurs died out.
What’s another reason? We can make a guess. New kinds of animals came to the earth. Some had big brains and were fast and strong. They could kill dinosaurs. Some ate dinosaur eggs, too.
