Starbucks says it uses one billion plastic straws (吸管) every year, but it plans to stop the use of plastic straws in each of its 28, 000 stores across the globe. Starbucks’ announcement comes just a week after Seattle, the city where the first Starbucks opened, forbade (禁止) plastic straws.
In order to replace the straws, Starbucks has developed a new lid (盖子) for some of its drinks like iced coffee and tea. Actually, the lid has a raised lip. Some people have compared the new lids to “adult sippy cups”, CNN Business reported.
Starbucks is always saying it is a company that cares much about the environment. In recent years, awareness about the effect that plastic is having on the environment—in particular, the ocean—has caused scientists to sound the alarm (警报) about a need to curb the use of plastics.
“What we realize is that these billions of little things in the ocean, such as one man’s toothbrush, one lady’s comb. all can cause the problem,” Emily Penn said. She is the co-founder of an expedition (探险队). “But what makes us happy is that we can solve it well through our daily actions. We need billions of small actions—just little daily things to reduce the pollution.”
Customers who still want to enjoy a Starbucks drink with a straw will be able to request one, but it won’t be plastic. Instead, they will be given a straw made from paper or other eco-friendly materials.
In May, McDonald’s said it would experience a change from the use of plastic to paper straws in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The announcement from Starbucks could be a sign that more large chain restaurants will accept this kind of activity.

It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature. He had seen some red-tailed hawks, red foxes, wood turtles and other animals. He also found special native flowers.
Suddenly it was announced that the "empty" land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil would be covered with extra grounds.
When he heard about the news, he was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.
Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and how the houses would affect the local environment. He sent letters to members of the local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose building the houses.
Andrew's teachers described him as a gentle, shy and active boy. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door to ask the people who did not want the houses to be built to sign(签名). In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people.

In fact, several species(物种)that were endangered have seen a surprising comeback in recent decades, thanks to major protection efforts.
Besides the giant panda, Yunnan’s snub-nosed monkey(金丝猴)and the crested ibis(朱鹮)are also among these success stories. The crested ibis, for example, was once widespread in east China, Japan, Russia and South Korea, but was later thought to die out. In 1981, seven crested ibises were found in Shanxi Province. Since then, breeding programs have helped its population reach 2,000. China has sent crested ibises to Japan and South Korea in recent years to help the species regenerate(发展壮大).

Sitting there worrying is no use and it can’t solve your problems. Grades at school are often a top worry for kids. If you worry most about grades, ask yourself these questions:
◆Why are grades important? What do grades mean to me?
◆How do I get ready for class? Do I go over (复习) my notes even when there isn’t a test?
◆Do I have a good learning environment?
◆Have I tried different ways of studying?
If your worry is about a fight with your friend, you might write down all the things you could do — write a note to him or her, invite him or her to watch a basketball game, say sorry to him or her and so on. Once you have a list of things to do, you could choose one thing that may get your friend back.
You can ask for help when you’re worried. You can find someone to talk to, such as your parents, friends and teachers.

Sometimes it can be really hard to tell anyone that you’re feeling sad, worried, or upset. Don’t keep feelings locked inside. If so, it can even make you feel sick!
If you talk with someone who cares about you, like your mom, dad, friends and teachers, you will not be all alone with your problems or worries. Although it doesn’t mean your problems or worries die out, at least someone else knows what your trouble is and can help you find ways to deal with it.
If the person doesn’t understand what you mean right away, try explaining(解释)it in a different way or give an example that has something in common with your feelings. Of course, there are many ways for you to speak up your feelings. If you think you’ll have trouble saying what’s in your mind, write it down on a piece of paper.
Some of you, just like some adults, are more private(私人的)than others. That means some of you will feel shyer about sharing your feelings. You don’t have to share every feeling you have, but it is important to share feelings when you need help.

What subject do you worry about the most at school? Many student worry about math. Some student can’t sleep well the day before a math exam. Others may feel very nervous during the math exam. But do you know the right postures might be a way to make you less nervous?
Postures mean the ways you sit in front of your desk. When you study, maybe you changes your postures all the time. Sometimes you slump over or sit up straight. Or sometimes you lie on your back or put your head on your desk.
For those students who feel like a deer in the headlights before taking a math test, a simple change in posture could make a big difference.
Scientists have tested 125 college students. They ask the students to do a sample math test while sitting in a slumped over position ,or sitting up straight. After the test, 56% of students say the exam is easier to do if they are sitting up straight.
The findings are that the slumped-over position shuts the students down so that they cannot think clearly. The slumped-over position also can bring the students bad memories. While sitting up straight can help students do better on math exams.
Students who are not nervous about taking the math exam do not necessarily get help from better postures. But they do find that doing math while slumping over is more difficult.
These findings about body position can help people prepare for many different types of performance under stress, not just math tests. So when you feel stressed out, you can also try to sit up straight or stand tall. It can help you feel more positive and focus better.
