The Earth we live in is facing a big challenge. The air and water have been polluted seriously. Resources (资源), specially water resources are also gradually becoming less and less. Therefore, let’s take action together to protect the beautiful blue planet.
What is World Water Day?
People, animals and plants all depend on water. This day is about encouraging people to take action to fight the world water crisis (危机). The main focus of this day is to help achieve the goal of having clean water for everyone by 2030.
The water crisis situation
Although over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, the freshwater resurces for human use are not abundant.
Many people in developing countries drink polluted water. One in four children’s deaths in the world is caused by lack ( 缺乏) of clean water. Over two billion people live in countries that don’t have a good enough water. It will be more dificult to find the safe drinking water, and half of the world’s population could be living in areas of water lack by 2025.
Infuence of water resources shortage
Because of the lack of water resources, it is hard to find the safe, clean water for drinking. People drink dirty water instead, which can cause deadly diseases. It has effect on the children’s education. Many children have to walk far every day just to collect water for their family. Without water, people can’t keep clean, so diseases spread.
How can we help?
Use less water in your daily life. For example, have shorter showers and turn off the tap while you brush your teeth. Tell your friends and family about the importance of protecting and saving water for the life of our planet. Support charities that help bring clean water to people who need it.

Vegetarians usually have lower levels of heart disease, and studies have also shown that they have a lower risk of diabetes (糖尿病) than people who eat meat. However, most people don’t realize that a vegetarian diet produces less pollution to the earth.
Researchers from the Union of Concerned Scientists in the US recently studied how people affect the environment. The study showed that eating meat is one of the main ways that humans can change the environment, second only to the use of motor vehicles.
Then, how can eating meat have a bad effect on the environment? For a start, all farm animals such as cows, pigs, and sheep give off methane gas (沼气) by breathing. One cow can produce up to 60 liters of methane each day. Methane gas is the second most common greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). Many environmental experts now believe that it is more responsible (有责任的) for global warming than carbon dioxide. It is estimated (估计) that 25% of all methane released (释放) into the air comes from farm animals.
Another way that meat production affects the environment is through the use of water and land. 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of beef while only 20 gallons of water are needed to produce one pound of wheat. One acre of farmland used for crop (农作物) production can produce 40,000 pounds of potatoes. 30,000 pounds of carrots, or 50,000 pounds of tomatoes, however, one acre of farmland used for raising cows can produce just 250 pounds of beef.
Many people now see the benefits of a vegetarian diet, not just for health reasons, but also because it plays an important role in protecting the environment. However, some nutritionists advise against switching to a totally strict vegetarian, or vegan diet. They believe a vegan diet, which excludes (拒绝) all products from animal sources, such as cheese, eggs, and milk, can be short of many necessary vitamins and minerals our bodies need.
Today, many people know that it is important to take better care of their bodies, and to use the earth’s resources more efficiently. As this understanding spreads, more people may realize that to help the environment and for the human race to survive, more of us will need to become vegetarians.

I'm sure you all know how important recycling is. Recycling is that you take old things and turn them into new things. It sounds like magic. But it's actually very scientific.
Material | The first thing you have to do is to collect items(物品) that can be recycled. Only certain materials can be recycled. These include things made out of paper, metal, glass and plastic. |
Daily things | Can you think of everyday items made of these materials? Soda cans are good example. They are made out of metal. Magazines and newspaper are made out of paper. So are milk boxes. Some bottles of juice are made out of glass. Bags and yogurt containers are made out of plastic. There are many things that can be recycled. |
Loop(循环) | These things are usually stamped with the recycling loop. It has 3 arrows that go in a triangular(三角形)circle. This shows that cycle(循环)continues. Items are thrown away but continue their lives as something else. |
Process(过程) | Let's go back to the process of recycling. ①The items are put in a recycling bin. ②A truck carries the items to a recycling plant. ③The materials are separated and squashed (被压扁成)into square cubes. ④Companies buy and turn them into new products. |

He was born in Yunnan Province in 1371 and his parents named him Ma Sanbao. Eleven years later, a rich young man called Zhu Di caught him. Over time the rich man saw that Zheng He was very clever and strong and they became close friends. In 1403 Zhu Di became the King of China and he asked Zheng He to join his new government and gave him a new name—Zheng He.
The King wanted to learn more about the world and show other countries his power. He ordered people to build many new ships and made Zheng He their leader. Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He travelled to different parts of the world. He certainly travelled to India, Africa and the Middle East. A few people think his ships may have even reached South America and Australia. Each trip lasted between two and four years and it is believed he sailed more than 50,000 kms during the years of his travels. With 28,000 men and over 300 ships, such as boats for food, water and even horses, Zheng He’s fleet (船队) was much smaller than Europeans’ for over 500 years.
On these trips he brought with him many Chinese goods like silk and medicine to give to foreign kings or to sell for local goods. He returned from each trip with boats filled with expensive things such as gold and jewellery, foreign guests and strange animals like a giraffe. It is a pity that we may never learn everything about Zheng He’s travels. After he died in 1433, the new king, who believed these trips were unlucky and too expensive, ordered them to stop the travels and he burned almost all the books about Zheng He’s travels. It is only in the last 50 years that historians have begun to carefully study the adventures of the great Zheng He.
