Spring Clean-up Day this year will be on May 20th. It will start with a town clean-up at 8 o’clock in the morning, and a tree planting activity in Rockland Park is to follow in the afternoon. As usual, we will provide gloves, rubbish bags and other cleaning tools. You will also get free lunches and T-shirts when the clean-up ends at noon. We are going to have a competition to see which team can pick up the most rubbish. Bring your kids with you. It is a great chance to teach them to care about the environment around us. 247 students of Fudan University have volunteered to teach the children in Xihaigu region(地区) of Ningxia for the past 22 years. The region used to be poor because of its terrible natural environment. “We expect to make a difference to the children’s life by sharing our knowledge in different fields,” one of the volunteers says.
The students have different talents, so the volunteers have used different teaching ways to help them develop good study habits. “The children there didn’t learn English before, so we started with easy knowledge like English letters and pronunciation(发音),” says Li Lianshuo, a Fudan volunteer. The volunteers help the students remember English words, read articles and deal with their study problems. “We visit the students’ homes in our free time. We communicate with their parents so that we help the parents understand the importance of children’s study, because the parents didn’t care much about it years ago,” explains Yang Chenhaotong, who was the leader of the volunteer team in 2019. According to Yang, the parents give their children a lot of support(支持) in their studies now.
The volunteers have helped the children with their studies. They have also set up football clubs and held many ball games to make the children’s life colorful. Pippi Pet Rescue was set up then. The group runs not for money, but for helping more street cats find a home. How does it do this?
Well, it shows their cats as if (仿佛) they were cars. On its website (网站), people can learn about the cats’ age, color and other information. Kayla Delcoure, a member of the group, had this idea when her family was thinking about buying a car. This is really helpful. Lots of people become interested in these cats. Some people give away money to help these cats live better. A man from Canada came to take an old cat home from the group.
People give these cats a home, and the cats help make people happy, too. A little girl gets a cat from the group. She sleeps with it every night. This makes her feel safe and warm. A woman sees her cat as a good friend.
The “friend” always walks behind her and makes her laugh. Do you want to take a cat from the group? Well, before doing it, you’d better learn more about keeping a cat as a pet.

In the first place, a no car day should be set up every week in our school because cars not only cause serious air pollution but also waste energy. On a no-car day, neither students nor teachers are allowed to drive to school. Just walk, cycle or run, use our legs and enjoy the fun.
In the second place, we had better not use plastic bags any more. No one can stand the “white pollution”. So, it is wise to use bags which can be reused again and again.
Finally, one thing that we should keep in mind: every big thing comes from the small thing. Therefore, as students, we ought to turn off the lights the moment we leave, turn off the water tap in time, and reuse our textbooks and so on.
In one word, it is necessary for all of us to put the low carbon lifestyle into our daily life. Just remember these: no-car day, no plastic bags, and no waste. Let’s do it now.

This year, Earth Hour fell on March 26. The annual tradition was created to raise awareness for climate change. Those celebrating turn off all their electrical appliances (家用电器) for one hour. It also draws attention to another serious problem that the world is currently facing the threat of light pollution.
Light pollution happens when too much man-made light harms nature. Scientists have found that it is especially harmful to animals which are active at night. These creatures rely on the natural light cycle provided by the movement of the sun to help coordinate (协调) their sleep cycles. When this is disturbed by constant bright lights from man-made structures, it can seriously disorientate (使失去方向感) the animals and harm their physical health. “Wild life animals have lived on this planet with biological rhythms changing that has very great effects,” said Travis. A lack of darkness at night can also cause difficulties for animals in other ways.
Newly hatched (孵化) baby sea turtles rely on the brighter horizon over the ocean to guide them from the beach to the sea. However, with man-made light next to the oceans, the small animals are easily led away from the right path. “Hatchlings are attracted to lights and crawl inland, or crawl aimlessly down the beach, sometimes until dawn, when predators (天敌) or birds get them,” said Michael Salmon, a biologist at Florida Atlantic University.
Man-made light has caused “drastic (激烈的) change” to the natural environment of animals, research scientist Christopher Kyba told the International Dark-Sky Association. “Predators use to hunt and prey (猎物) animals use darkness as cover,” Kyba explained. If a predator has such advantage in hunting its prey, this can lead to an imbalance in ecosystem as the hunted animals no longer able to maintain their population when they become over-hunted.
1. Why was Earth Hour created?A.To raise awareness of air pollution. |

The world produces millions of tons of plastic every year, and a lot of plastic ends up in the sea WasteShark is a part of the fight against plastic pollution. It is a drone(无人机) for cleaning water in lakes, rivers, seas and so on.
The new drone can’t fly in the sky but can swim through water. The smart tool can work for about sixteen hours on a single charge(充电), eating the plastic waste before it goes into the open sea. The drone can collect about 180 kg of waste at one time.
“Once plastic waste ends up in the sea, it’s very hard to collect the waste because it does break down. It gets smaller and smaller and it’s just hard to get to our big open seas and collect the waste there,” said Nancy Wallace, an environmental expert. “We’d like to collect the waste that is closer to the beach. It is easier and cheaper.”
